Very nice retrospective synopsis of two classic horror magazines! Would you consider doing one on 1984 ; later, renamed 1994, please ? It had artwork by Woods; Corben; and lots of others !

Giger left a legacy that will stand in human culture. The first ALIEN is unique, because Giger was in charge of the Art department. Ridley Scott let him do his job, and the rest is history... missing his talent...❤RIP, H.R. Giger❤

I want to blame these books for perpetuating the belief among some people that dinosaurs and humans coexosted, but the art is so good I can't be at them.

Interesting video. I think Gurney's other books, Imaginative Realism, and Color & Light, deserve a mention. Both are very good, and extremely useful reference books for artists, even for me, as a hobby photographer.

Most boring and unbelievable fantasy setup. The guy just wanted to paint dinosaurs and people and for that purpose pulled a set of half-backed stories out of his ass. Talking dinosaurs? Give me a break. Lame and vanilla, not a fan.

Wrightson was a one-of-a-kind Master. Many years ago while I was attending San Diego Comic Con, they announced over the PA that Bernie Wrightson would be at a certain booth doing a signing. My eyes popped out of my head. He was NOT one of the expected guests. I was so excited to go meet one of the talents in the industry that meant so much to me that I ran around the comic book vendors gathering anything I could find for him to sign. One of those was the Frankenstein book. When I finally got to the booth, I was so star struck. I couldn't believe I finally got to meet him, and it was only by chance. He was so friendly and welcoming. That moment made the entire Comic Con for me I will never forget. Thanks Bernie!

I got to see this at the theater when it was in it's Midnight Movie circuit, when back in the 80s many theater chains would show cult classics and other more recent movies popular with college kids. This one had been out for about a year and I missed seeing it in it's initial run. I was only 17 so I had to sneak out of the house after the parents had gone to sleep and walk up to the local multiplex. The theater was empty except for one couple that came in just before the film started. The lights go out and the film just starts. There are no previews, no animation reminding you of the snack bar, etc - Its just starts and whoever is in the projection booth has the speaker volume cranked ALL THE WAY TO THE MAX. The speakers were distorting and rattling during that opening sequence when the title Heavy Metal appears on the screen. I was like "Holy shit! I had never heard the volume in a movie theater up that loud before. Never knew it was possible. It was the best animated movie I had ever seen. It also helped that I smoked a joint on the way to the theater. The 80s were awesome.

i once saw a copy of Frankenstein illustrated by Wrightson in a Barnes and Noble book store... Frankenstein has been my favorite book since the first time i read it, and here was a copy that had illustrations EXACTLY like the images i'd seen all those times before in my mind! i bought it without another thought; a treasured addition to my personal library!
