Hi Ken, We meant in Dayton back in 2104. Great Video on the setting. I have question how would I be able to apply the recommendations to my Maestro. I hope you check your comments. The last one was dated 7 years ago.

What's with the "DX Jew Profile" (5:43)? Bizarre!

Late to show but enjoyed your video , one thing I would say is I know your understanding of dismissing the lowest and highest frequencies as they are out of the tx bandpass, but in most cases they do have an effect on the adjacent freq,s, so it’s worth playing around with them.

Thank YOU. Very precise explanation and NOW I know how to setup transmit profiles. Under the TUNEPWR slider. I'll give the FDX another try. You have a different approach from another video I saw.

I'm a bit late with my comment but I wanted to add my thought on the DEXP setting. With my 6600 I simply set it to eliminate any room noise. I'll key the mic, and without talking, raise the DEXP level to the point where the room/background noise just disappears. I've found by doing the DEXP setup that way, the action of the Downward Expander is a lot less abrupt and more like a "soft knee" gate. With my 6600 I use a variety of microphones and outboard processors depending on the mode and my mood. The "basic" configuration is a Sennheiser MD-421 microphone directly into the 6600. My "over the top" AM setup is a late 1950's vintage RCA BK-11 ribbon microphone feeding a Symetrix 528 processor, followed by an Aphex Compellor leveling amplifier into an Orban 9100B Optimod AM. As an AM/FM broadcast audio consulting engineer for over 40 years, I've learned two very important rules. Sound is subjective, and Less is More.

I may just be slow on the uptake, but I don't understand. What do I do if I don't have a transverter, which is what you were using? How do I get the rig into full duplex mode? I haven't been able to keep on slice in RX mode while the other is in TX mode. That's just the first 3 minutes of the video. I'm sure I'll have more questions when I get all the way through it. Thanks for the hard work you're doing for the ham and Flex communities. KF6E

Ken.. Enjoyed your video and it was very helpful. My only problem is that with your setup the audio I hear is delayed and sounds echo! Very annoying. What am I doing wrong?
@nm9p
@nm9p 5 лет назад
Nothing wrong. It is the usual latency delay from the software transmit processing and the internal delay of your second slice receiver. It takes some getting used to. But it is useful to hear in real time what your adjustments do to your audio. If you can’t get used to the delay, you can use just one slice and use the quick record and playback function to record your audio and listen to it after an adjustment.

Ken - I followed your setup exactly and noticed on my Flex-6700 that my waterfall stops (locks in position) as soon as I push my PTT button (the band scope still works fine). Any idea why this is happening?

Ken, this so helpful. I am grateful for people like you that take the time to do these videos. I still consider myself new to the Flex, even after a year. Could you clarify how to do the audacity record? I'm guessing you send the receive audio out a DAX channel, and set Audacity to record from that? Still a little vague on DAX stuff. thanks again. Hey Ken. I really appreciate all the detailed videos on the flex 6000 series. Being leagally blind I've tried a number of diff rigs am still having issues seeing this rig and small print. The flex series of radios seem to be a perfect fit for me. I've been looking at the flex 6300 along with the maestro. Don't have a windows machine so the maestro will be a great addition. I appreciate all the hard work you have put into these instructional videos. Can't wait to be back in the air. Hope it won't be to long. Keep up these awesome videos. Because they sure are helpful. 73s AA1US.

UPDATE: Since update V.1.6.0, the Mic Profile was separated from the Transmit Profile. So when the video says to save to your Transmit Profile, you will now save it in a Mic Profile. This is actually a good change for SSDR, because it allows changes in other transmit parameters without needing to save additional Mic profiles. For example I have three Transmit Profiles that allow me to select Output Power of 100, 5, or 1 Watt, just for fun. Others will have a separate transmit profile for running with their amp which controls timing of the external switching ports. These parameters have nothing to do with Mic audio profiles.

Ken, great video. How do you deal with the delay? I seriously cannot use your methods because the delay trips me up and I cant evaluate my audio.
@nm9p
@nm9p 8 лет назад
Experience, I suppose. I have played with this enough that my ears/brain have just gotten used to ignoring the words in my delayed audio and just concentrate upon the sound of it. I guess being a musician/singer has helped me get used to playing or singing along with multiple other instruments and only picking out the information I need. I can't explain it beyond that. Just play with it (off the air) and you might get used to it. I also have spent time recording from the DAX output of the Slice B receiver with Audacity so I can listen to my audio when I am not talking at the same time. You might try that option.

What studio mic are you using Ken?
@nm9p
@nm9p 8 лет назад
Sorry, I haven't checked comments for a while. My "Studio" mike is a Heil PR22UT, available for about $107 when the sales hit Guitar Center. Its response is very similar to the PR-781 with a little less bass and not as much attenuation from the backside. It suits my voice well. There are many other mics in $75-$100 +/- range that are very nice, too. When I made the first three videos about mic EQ, I had a Behringer Q802USB mixer in the line as well, but recent changes to SSDR have made it unnecessary, because I can now tap into the Mic with DAX Mic Stream and record to the computer without a USB mixer. I also sold my Flex-1500 and do not need the mixer to distribute the Mic to a second rig. I only have the 6500 for HF now. My Mic profiles for the studio Mic have all been edited to include the +20 dB Mic boost that the mixer used to provide.

Hi Ken....nice job...I follow on the Flex community as well but thought it important to comment on you Tube.....ur explanation makes it easy for the new user. I also use a PR22ut and a Behringer X1622USB mixer....using the mixer to feed 3 audio outputs into a set of studio monitors......on the mic side just the PR22 thru Aux Send to the Flex.....sure would like to learn more about how ur using ur mixer/Pr22 to feed multiple inputs.....now that would be a great video for hams (how To use a Mixer)......especially good for me! Hi Thanks for ur hard work! Steve 73 K3WKM

Nice explanation of the process Ken. It can be difficult to get reasonable audio from a hand microphone. I have found that a lot of hand mics using a plastic housing benefit from the addition of some cotton or other acoustic absorbing material to get rid of that hollow sound you mentioned. Excellent advice regarding "cut to sound better and boost to sound different" when tinkering with the EQ! Having worked you when you have the studio microphone attached I know how good you sound with that setup! 73, Rob W1AEX

Well Burt the way I see it is multifaceted ..some folks love their radio but because of life if they can hear it and actually have a qso that is all the time they have for radio. Other may not hear well enough and yet they are making contacts .there are so many other issues for people. It is like the cw operator that says unless you can copy 20-25 WPM in your head you shouldn’t be on the air. You have to start some where. Let’s do our best always learning and have fun with our hobby
