Lol yeah, Anna and Emma was genius in this one, I'm not a fan of indie either. Definitely one of Emma's best acting in my opinion lol cause her dorkiness, this one and Cruella.
It makes me happy that you loved it! I was 20 when this movie came out in 1995. I was touched that Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze and John Leguizamo did such an amazing job in the roles! The message was beautiful and I only wish all rural folks were so welcoming!
I really like this movie but the more I watch it, the more I see plot holes. The sequel, "They Follow", is coming out soon - I'm looking forward to that!
The part where CHi-Chi falls on stage after losing the pageant always makes me laugh. I competed in pageants and I wanted to do that at least once just for gags.
Fun fact: According to Wesley Snipes, he took this role because he wanted to "explore his feminine side". And he was MISERABLE. All the constricting costuming and the makeup and the SHOES. He hated the high heeled shoes! (I don't blame him; I've always hated them myself.) So much so that when the movie was over, he built a bonfire and burned all the shoes he had to wear. He said it changed his view on women and what they had to go through to look good.
He has also said that he wouldn't be against playing this character again. Especially now that they've made so many advances in make up for darker skin tones.
Fun Fact: Naomi Campbell modeled the shorts and boots Wesley had on. I found this out by complete coincidence. I just happened to be browsing RU-vid and watch old runway fashion show. One of them happened to be an old Versace one. And sure enough her comes Naomi, hair pulled up, black top and the shorts and boots which I had immediately recognized. Then the cameo of her and Wesley made sense😁💯
The year before this American film came out, a very similar film came out in Australia. In 1994 the movie The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert came out and was a pretty good hit. Not as big as this film, but it definitely inspired this film. It's big stars were Guy Pearce, Terence Stamp and Hugo Weaving. Mr. Weaving would go on to star in The Matrix and the Lord Of The Rings films. I always kind liked Priscilla a bit more.
@@ZoneXavierr A lot of the negative critiques To Wong Foo got when it was released was because of its comparison to Priscilla, which a lot of critics preferred. A lot of drag queens back in the day also saw Priscilla as a more accurate representation of drag queens. In the end, they're both remembered as queer cinema classics today.
No one mentions the Queens on the Stage, all of them LEGENDARY QUEENS. In fact ONE of them or perhaps a few were also on Sally Jesse Raphael Show, yes that long ago. the one all in black, I specifically remember her because of her looks. Some are now gone from us. But the one who crushed the cup, is Coco...OMFG!!! I forgot. But she is awesome! Sheriff "Dullard" was an awesome "Heel" actor. He unfortunately left us in 2006 at the age of 40. And yes, Stockard Channing was also in First Wives Club, besides Grease and Practical Magick and The Matthew Shepard Story. AND if you saw Disney's Sleeping Beauty, an homage to the "Faeries" in there.
I just checked IMDb for reference on the young people's ages. Good news - while the characters might be younger than their actors (I don't know if they actually mention the character ages), the actress who plays Bobby Lee is actually 3 years OLDER (b. 1969) than the actor who plays Bobby Ray (b. 1972). John Leguizamo was born in 1960 and is much older than either of them. All of them were full-grown adults when this movie was made.
Noxie definitely addresses the differences between being a drag queen vs being transgender in her speech in the car. She just uses the outdated term “transsexual”.
The lady that you couldn’t quite recognize from the town folk was Blythe Danner, who you may know from appearances on Will And Grace as Will’s mom. She’s also Gwenyth Paltrow’s mom in real life.
about ChI Chi`s make up, Jhon Leguizamo has said that he notice how latin women, specially in his family, used a more pale foundation because they were very little shades back then and also because they wanted to appeared more white and be accepted: so he used a more pale make up for the character to reflect that.
@@ZoneXavierralso, if you pay attention closely, the foundation Chi Chi wears progressively gets closer to her natural skin tone through the movie. It was done very intentionally
@@ZoneXavierr a boy showed it to me once on a date when he realized i hadn’t seen it we stopped everything to watch and there’s a lot of pop culture and drag race references in it i had no clue where from the movie. it’s dated for sure but important watch as a queer person, absolutely required queer viewing bc history. i’m paying this knowledge forward!
I didn’t find him attractive, and it was uncomfortable when he called them his little princesses. But I absolutely loved this movie and the psychological aspects of it!
