I competitively shoot civil war muzzle loading rifles, your mini shouldn’t need to be short started as stated in the other comments. The whole idea of the mini ball is for the skirt to expand, grabbing the rifling and making the rifle easier and quicker to load. You might even want to try a thinner skirted ball.
