I was laughing at the same thing! 😂 In the time it took him to accurately fire six shots some other dudes put 40-50 rounds into the dirt. Tenderizing the hill I guess.

If this was the Civil War, loading began while Fort Sumter was under siege and finished just before the Appomattox peace signing.

I once read a report written by an Army officer doing official testing of original revolving rifle. He found them to be incredibly accurate at extreme ranges. I don't know if they were ever purchased in any numbers to be of use. The accuracy he obtained was uncanny.

I have the replica Uberti Remington Army cap&ball .44, one with 8" barrel and one with a 5.5" barrel. Using 255 grain conical bullets, over 25 grs (Swiss 4Fg or Hodgden 777 3Fg), from a solid bench rest, two-hand hold, either handgun will consistently tightly group(3"-4" groups!) all 6 bullets in the head of a silhouette target at 100 yards. The loads make 950 fps from the 5.5" and 1000 fps from the 8" barrel, and duplicate the original 1873 45 Colt cartridge loaded with 40 grains of 2Fg black powder. The finer-grained black powder (Swiss) only needs 25 grs to achieve the same velocity that needed 40 grs of coarse-grained 2Fg! Have a R&D 45 Colt conversion cylinder too. With careful safe pressure handloads of a 255gr bullet at the same velocities as the C&B cylinders, the 45 Colt cylinder shoots to same point of aim and is almost as accurate as the C&B cylinders. The C&B loadings seem to always shoot just a bit tighter groups than the cartridge cylinder. Most modern shooters are clueless about just how deadly accurate and hard hitting at long handgun range a .44 Army cap and ball revolver actually is when properly loaded! At long handgun range a C&B revolver will shoot with an incredible precision that a modern auto pistol cannot come close to achieving!
@billwessels207

I once had a tuned cap and ball revolver which was much more accurate than my Ruger 44 magnum. Black powder burns much more consistently than smokeless. Old timers had more options for extremely high quality black powder which simply is not available today. Some made their own from family recipes handed down. Making your own is risky business unless you know what you are doing. You tube has videos of how to but sometimes it is best to stick with the real experts and do your homework and take all recommended precautions.

Uberti has created a carbine version of the Model 1873 Single Action Army for some time now. Complete with the historically accurate name of "Model 1873 Cattleman", it is virtually identical to this 66' Remington. Available in .45LC, .44-40 Centerfire and .357 Mag/.38Spl. NOTE: These guns are much more rare than the regular 73' pistol they mass-produce. The last time I checked they were only available on Taylor's Firearms. A call to Dixie Gun Works and Cabelas did not yield anything.

If you preload Four or Five cylinders , it's easy and quick to swap them out just like clips in a semi auto. I love this gun because it breaks us free from the bullet manufacturer. This ammo and powder comes from nature, no stores required. If guns were ever taken from us, this would be the fall back gun that saves our freedom. Everyone should own one.

At a time where many fellows had one shooters only, that Remington Rifle and Revolver did allow one man to fire 12 rounds. That was rather formidable in the good old times...percussion firearms times. Some of the early Texas Rangers carried four Revolvers and fired 24 rounds from a galloping horse. The first bold Comanches that had faced them bold Rangers in combat, for sure got surprised by that firepower.

I have owned this magnificent rifle for over 2 years now and I have dropped 1 hog and 3 coyotes with it. Most recent coyote kill was just 2 weeks ago. A friend in West PA has had a problem coyote on his land for some time which was posing a great danger to kids who play in the fields and woods. Not to mention several pets have disappeared from the surrounding homes with blood tracks found. I took my 1866 rifle out to his farm and set up in a thicket on one of the meadows. I was using traditional cap and ball on this hunt. 37 grains Swiss FFFg and 140 grain Hornady .454 roundball. After spending about 4 hours in the hideout and 2 Maverick Reds later, my friend brought the critter running with repeated blows on a distressed-rabbit call. At 110 yards away the yote stopped, broadside to me and I fired. Instant kill with just iron sights. When we headed out to the site on horses that he kept on his property, we found that the roundball had drilled through both shoulders, shattering the spine on it's way out. This little rifle is NOTHING to frown at. At the minimum, it will produce ballistics on par with a hot .44-40 round and at max, it exceeds .357 Magnum performance, especially with cast conicals.

@nifty1940 7 лет назад
If you're not asking that in jest, then, yep, we do have them, but heavily restricted. And it's getting worse. Everything now is justification! It's a pain in the proverbial and it never used to be until that Tassie devil/maniac - Martin Bryant - used his Colt SLR .223 to murder 35 and wound some 20+, John Howard (Prime Minister at the time) then had all semi's outlawed and it's grown from that. Club membership is the legit way to have short and longarms, but, even then with restrictions. They don't worry too much about muzzleloader's as it's a single shot, loaded with effort. And besides who'd mow down so many with a single shot, cos you'd be trampled to death trying to reload.
@maxcolt4124
@maxcolt4124 7 лет назад
nifty1940 it sounds horrible..... I've seen the videos on the "gun buyback program" they used over there. it was like some sort of twisted nightmare... all those guns destroyed for nothing. have to ask, with all those guns gone do you feel safer?
@nifty1940
@nifty1940 7 лет назад
Big brother was leashed on us through that prick, Bryant. Safer, Hell no. The deaths keep coming, in all sorts of ways. My firearms are locked away in steel lined safes, behind reo'd windows, doors and latches with keys well hidden. I had a 3 hour stand off inside my home against a bloke armed with scissors, my wife hiding in the bedroom and my guns securely locked some 30 ft away, and I felt helpless. I'd have had more effect whipping out the old fella, and bashing him to death over the intruders bleeding head. The star force cops were outside while a brave cop negotiated, eventually successfully, thank God. i hate that Bryant. he took away my right of self defense and restricted my freedom to defend my family. They take away your guns, they take away your rights.

There are good reasons Wild Bill Hickok stuck with Remington New Army his whole life, despite cartridge revolvers coming along in the 1870s (he certainly could have afforded a Colt or Smith & Wesson cartridge gun if he wanted one). With paper or skin cartridges, you can load one of these about as fast as a Colt Peacemaker, plus load with loose components if you're not in a hurry or out of cartridges. They were every bit as accurate as the cartridge guns of the day, very similar power, ammunition was lighter and cheaper (though the price differential disappeared if you reloaded your brass), exactly the same effort to clean after shooting. Cap and ball wasn't really obsolete until smokeless took over in the 1890s, and it's still very practical for some applications a century and a half after the Rollin White patent expired and let everyone build cartridge revolvers.

I always wondered why the cavalry of that era didn't ever fully adopted using these & instead used single shot carbines . However @ that point ( the civil war era ) guns were going through such rapid development that the weapons a cavalryman might have started the war with may not have been the weapons he ended using . Still fascinating to see this historic carbine in action. TY for posting.

Power and range. Being the big factors . Pre civil war they had what they called horse pistols normally carried in a holster on the horse itself (Colt dragoon ) too big for hip holsters.but still relied on the saber. Then for rifles they might be expected to engage defensively still from greater distances. Plus they trialed some the carbines like this but for those and other reasons they rejected them. Same reasons commercially on the civilian market they never really sold well.

Hi how's things going. One more question...have you taken the Remington carbine any further than 120?

Why not use miniball instead of round ball makes loading faster . Also helps stop chain fire with small amount of lubricant over bullet. That being a old cowboy trick most use lard or beef tallow.

what's the muzzle velocity on that sexy carbine?

I haven't chronographed it, but if I had to guess, I would say 700 - 800 fps with these loads.

You must be atleast around 1000fps. Your rounds are dinging the plate at almost 1/2 of a second after the report at 100yds range. That's just an educated guess of course. 700-800fps would probably reflect an eight inch barrel Remy I expect.

Where is this at? It looks a lot lil Vegas but I don't know any ranges lil that. Also have you considered bore butter on the face of the ball after loading. It came with my 1851 navy copy and it really reduced the wear and powder fouling on what I guess you'd call the breach. Its saposed to reduce the likelihood of chain fire as well
