The whale songs were so cool! It is truly amazing what Davis is getting to experience because of his parent’s courage. Getting closer to being out there with you! Keep up the amazing work!
I know we are al just visitors, but you are correct; too many rules. especially when you try sailing into some places with a pet.. Or like us with one person with another passport. Its disturbing.
Shannon how is life of a nomadic sailing family? How are you finding Tonga? Captain Davis is certainly a local celebrity amongst the islands and buddy boat crews, great to see that he is growing into a young man of the world and this will be a basis for his life wherever it maybe. Hope all is well after the Hurricane that just hit Florida coast line. Be safe, take care and God Bless you all. 😇🙏⛵️🤩
Life is going really well! Tonga was great! Davis is meeting friends all over the world. Our family, thankfully, did not get much of the hurricane. Some of our friends though lost everything.
Great content, y’all have great chemistry! So glad y’all are living your best life and taking us along. The look on Davis face when he bit into the bread fruit said it all! Safe travels
Another excellent video! Looks like you have to be flexible when it comes to your sailing schedule. Sometime you’ve left early and now you’ve had to stay an extra few days. That’s sailing!!
OMG, everyone asks me where Davis is all the time, even my family. Luckily, me and Davis set up a Life360 so I just point to wherever y'all are cause I do not even know half the places you go. The fact he still has that shirt from Troop 280 is CRAZY! <= 1:13 . I am a First Class now and I wish you all the best of luck on your bright new adventures.
Hi Andrew!!! Congrats on First Class! Davis needs to get back into his scouting activities. Tell everyone that asks that he really misses his friends and hates missing out on middle school. We are still planning to return in 2026 so he can attend high school. He is REALLY looking forward to that! Great to hear from you - you made Davis’ day!😊
Why throw skipjack back... Skipjack makes 75% of can tuna. Yellowfin tuna has a high mercury level and is mixed with skipjack to bring down the overall levels down.
Skipjack has a unpleasant taste unless you bleed it out thoroughly. We found a way to get the blood out of the meat using ice water, so now we keep them.
I thought Rob was calling Coast Guard to get help with that sea-snake. Turns out he was checking the weather. you que-ed those frames so well, I had a good laugh.
This has to be the most amazing, beautiful footage I've seen since watching the Sailing Zatara family swim with whale sharks off Western Australia. I don't know how I ever started watching their adventures, but it's thanks to them and a couple other families like them that I discovered your channel. I'm older and not entirely well, so I'm never going to be able to do what you're doing. But because of the ubiquity of high quality cameras and the Internet to distribute the video, I can in some sense go along with you on your travels. Obviously, I'm only receiving a tiny fraction of the experience you are, but it's still soul soothing and enriching. I thank you so much for sharing. I know you don't make these videos purely for altruistic reasons, but I just love how everything comes together so you can share. I sincerely appreciate it, and I wish you guys the very best in your travels.
Thank you so very much for your kind words! It warms my heart that we can bring joy and happiness to others through our story! We are happy that you found us!😊
We were just leaving when it happened and everyone that we contacted on shore just felt mild shaking but no tsunami or damage. The main source was closest to Ha’apai where we had our whale swim and that resort had no damage reported.
Shannon that was money well spent thank you for allow us to be part of this wonderful and amazing adventure, the underwater shots were magical. Well that’s another one to tick of the list, great to see that Captain Davis was doing some great whale spotting there. Take care, safe sailing and God Bless until our next episode 😇👍🙏⛵️🇺🇸
@@SailingParadiseFalls I figured as much! Not sure if zatara will be at the boat show in October, we were thinking about going but will wait for the Miami show! Safe travels
Each country has their own rules regarding contact with whales. The rules in Tonga require you to be with a tour operator who can control the experience. In French Polynesia, you can go in your own as long as you don't put the whale between the boat and a reef or something that prevents them from escaping. Some countries ban swimming with whales outright.
@@SailingParadiseFalls thank you for the answer. now the next question. what is your future path. I am sure you will not be going through the Suez canal. so will you ship the boat to the Med or just skip the med and go around south Africa to the Caribbean?
No charter boats are maintained at all well. In addition they are chartered by morons who canmot sail or dock or read charts. They have hit everything there is to hit. There is a reason the charter operations get rid of them when they do, ususlly 6-8 years. The boats that charter companies use are not well built, not robust and do not sail well. Combine a fragile boat put together by minimum wage 4:30 factory workers (not boatbuilders) in the lowest cost way possible with low competency low care charterers and sub-minimal "maintenance" and you will have the most expensive cheap boat possible.
@@SailingParadiseFalls I am sure it has. Though having spent a lifetime delivering yachts, some of which were ex-charter I would never buy one for myself. They just aren't fit for purpose. But you CAN do it in just about anything. That doesn't mean you should. My main point, however is that I don't think these boats are cheap: you can probably find non charter boats that have all the extras and work for about the same price as getting an ex-charter boat into shape.
Welcome & thank you very much! Our watermaker is AC powered not DC so that’s not an option for us. Had this one not come with the boat we would have chosen a DC watermaker 😊
Looked like you all were having fun, Davis is so growing up hey! as he exudes so much confidence we can certainly see the difference now, thank you a most enjoyable episode Shannon, Rob and last but not least Captain Davis, catamaran legend and Pirate of the Pacific Islands 🏴☠️Safe sailing and good bless to all 🙏😇⛵️
Niue really was a special place! We only had 4 days there due to weather but SO much fun! Davis used to grown g and especially liked his new titles you so kindly bestowed😊
The beetroot, egg Burger is an NZ thing, McDonald's in NZ even make one called a Kiwiburger. Kumara chips (sweet potato) and cream cheese is another thing you can look forward to
Watching whales while standing in an epic cave. Not too many people will ever have such an experience. Thanks for taking us along. You’re certainly living a blessed life. There is something different and special about your sailing channel. Stay safe
I was told that a sea snake’s mouth cannot open wide enough to bite a human. They can get the skin between the fingers so just make a fist as you are swimming away. ❤️
Yes, we had read that too before but I don’t care if it can bite, I still don’t want to swim with them. Locals said they can bite finger and most often toes🤣
This is the best video I've seen about costs so far! I think it would be great if you could make one every year to break down the yearly and monthly costs of living onboard in detail.
People really do not know how they get ripped off buying batteries. you can get 4 280ah 12 volt batteries and make a 48 volt bank all for $1999.00. That is 280 x 4 = 1120ah. They are just a safe as the Relion but you are not paying for a name. I would do 3 of those in a live aboard boat. Plus 48 volt means you can put them anywhere and run cables a lot cheaper than doing 12 volt. with that savings I would add a 48volt all in one 12k inverter and still be under what you paid for just the batteries.
We wanted to have the simplest system on the boat so as the boat was set up for 12 volts, we decided to keep everything at 12 volts. We also had a different battery in mind, but the size of the other brand was just a tad too large for us to fit it the current location and the Relion fit, was done in several other 45s and were an approved battery for insurance purposes. If we were to build a boat ourselves we probably would have a 48 volt system.
Its nice to see the cost of all facets of outfitting a ship for cruising. I have a few other questions? Alot of money where did the funds come from? Patreon? Clicks on RU-vid? Savings? Do you guys work at something?
We saved and lived off one of our incomes for about 6 years and have done well with our real estate holdings. We earn very little from RU-vid and Patreon but it helps. I was previously a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner for 26 years and Rob owns his own insurance adjusting company. Make a long term plan and stick to it :)
Just found your channel. How long did you have the Hunter 36? I started with a trailer able sailboat and we moved up to a 32’ Catalina. Wife thinks we need a Cat if we’re going to be aboard more often.
We had the Hunter around 3yr. It was great to sail around Fl and the Bahamas learning to sail and fix things. In my opinion, cats are more comfortable for living aboard but they do sail different. Try to get on different boats and see what you both like before making the investment 😊
