Where else should it start to play the tape than "where you left off" do you think tape decks secretly fast forward to a random locatation while you dont watch them?
Do you know if a USB DAC audio converter used on a PC would produce the same high quality sound that I used to get from a HI-FI/PlayStation optical out to my Sony Minidisc player or is the quality going to be reduced because it's USB? I don't have any optical outs anymore so I am trying to get optical from either a PC or a mobile phone but again I don't know if doing it this way, if possible would ruin the sound. I randomly came across a USB C to SPDIF on Amazon which I didn't think existed so I'm hoping I can get sound from my Android Phone but I haven't seen anyone do this. Have you tried either of these methods to transfer music? I'm glad I came across your channel because I did not think my 2001 Sony Minidisc player could have Bluetooth so thank you, I will be ordering an adapter as soon as I figure out a good optical source from a PC or mobile phone. Any help you could give me would be much appreciated.
I don't have any DAC experience. My PC has Optical out on the motherboard, so I don't know about adapters. Having said that... If your files are stored on the PC or Android phone and you have a compatible NetMD recorder then I would recommend using the WebMinidisc Pro site and a USB A to Mini-USB cable, even if you need a USB-C to USB-A adapter. This method (imho) will give a good sound quality, is quicker than real-time, and allows automatic copying of track titles. If you're using streaming (for non copyright media, of course), then I would try a USB to Optical Out adapter on your PC. Do a little research though, because MD recorders can only accept a certain bit-rate for Optical In (I can't remember what it is) so the adapter would have to use that bit-rate. USB-C to SPDIF (optical) sounds like a cool adapter, but if your music is files, rather than streaming, then USB-C to a USB-A adapter, then USB-A to Mini USB cable might allow you to use the WebMinidisc Pro site in Chrome for Android to transfer files directly to your MD recorder. You might already have those adapters and cables, so it's worth a try.
Finally, a USB DAC converts digital to analogue, which the recorder then has to re-convert to digital to store onto the disc. I'd stick with digital to digital if possible, that being the WebMD method (which I think would be best) or USB-C to SPDIF.
@@artsimannisto5659 My Aiwa AD-F410 has a bais guide sticker on the top. It's a handy cheat sheet. I really must learn and experiment with manual biasing, but don't have any three head decks.
Yep. WebMinidisc Pro can do that if you have the right player. Alternatively, Line out (or headphone out) to a PC Line In (adapter) will allow you to record using software such as Audacity.
I use SonybMZ-NE410 for NetMD recording, Panasonic SJ-MR220 for portable and TASCAM MD-350 for the home system. (Also got TASCAM DA-30 for DAT, and TASCAM CD-RW900SX for CD).
Mine has an issue where it will only record on the left channel I've tried adjusting the post but it does nothing it also does very quiet recording on type 2 cassettes yet plays cassettes perfectly fine on both channels
Sounds like it needs servicing by someone more knowledgeable than me. But if I had to guess, I've seen on other decks that there's different circuitry for playing and recording, but both sides are connected to the play/record head. I wonder if there's a cold solder joint on the record circuitry for the left channel. As for recording on type II being quiet, again I think it's something to do with the record circuitry. Although, I don't even know what difference in recording bias and levels (or anything else) there is supposed to be for Type II.
Some of the more unusual play lengths I have in my collection (mostly from Japan) include: C40, c46, c50, c60L (leaderless) c64, c70, c74, c80, c100, c110, c130 and c150. I'm still missing c10 and c20.
@@olaniyi570 That's a lot more lengths than I was aware existed. I've just received a wrapped TDK C15 computer cassette and I'm expecting two C10 computer cassettes shortly. For right-left stereo check and demo use respectively.
@@AvidRetro Lovely! Can't wait to watch it. I picked up a haul of pre-recorded ones too, recently. My video is awaiting editing, and will be up in maybe 1-3 weeks.
You bought some very cheap rubbish from China that really does not clean anything. It just ruins your disks. And the Chinee are counting their money........
My dad gave me a red sony mindisc recorder he got from a radio fair all working perfect an mz r900 in red .I have a few proper albums and a small number of blanks.used minidisc seem to go for fairly good money on ebay .
R900 is a good model imho. If you have original factory-pressed albums then they're worth a lot of money. The blanks seem to have come down in price recently, but are cheap enough to buy. I have way too many now.
Just fixed one of these. Someone had been inside soldering. Looks like they hashed up the ribbon cables. Some battery corrosion but not too bad. Once i fixed the ribbon cables it worked. Had to super glue one of the white end parts back on, they provide pressure at the end of the ribbon cable.
i like your video. the problem i'm having is that the minidisc player is not showing up for me to transfer music to. the minidisc player shows that its hooked up and so does my computer.do you have any ideas? i can't seem to find the driver
Hi, I have the same model as this one ,I followed the instructions you gave me to remove the bottom plate to check inside ,couldn't see any more corrosion. The problem I am now having is the catch on the inside of the battery cover is worn so I have to press the cover down to get the contacts to touch the battery. When I do this it plays and the battery level indicator goes up. I then tried a piece of silver foil on top of the battery closed the cover,it starts to play then says battery low and cuts off. I take the foil out press the cover and it plays and battery level goes up again. Any ideas what is going on? Phil
The TDK cassette was from the late 70s , early 80s and the range, if I remember rightly, was D (Dynamic), AD (Acoustic Dynamic) and OD (Optimum Dynamic) the latter having a brown label and J-card. I have examples of these which I bought at the time. Their Type II cassette was the SA (Super Avilyn) - a formulation that, I think, was exclusive to TDK. I never bought any of those as I mainly played my tapes on an old 'shoebox' recorder which didn't really play Type IIs.
I don't think I've ever seen a TDK OD here in the UK. The SAs were my favourite when I could afford more than entry-level. Nothing would sound great on a shoebox player, but that was the only portable type I had as a kid. They're good for 8-bit computer tapes though, better than more expensive players.
If I ever come across sealed blank tapes, I always pick them up if the price is right. Sadly many people have caught on to their scarcity, so I will usually pass on any of the Type 1's. That TDK tape was probably the limit of what I would pay for a sealed AD-90. It's not so bad if it's a charity shop (depending on the charity).
Yes, if it's any charity shop I consider it a donation if I'm paying over the odds, and it's always nice to find new tapes, so paying up is the price of the entertainment.
I would chalk this up in the "not much you can do" camp. One of the concessions of portability here is that these .5% edge case "very warped but still technically playable on a full sized deck" disks aren't playable on the Sound Burger. Even if you could play them by adding spacers or other records underneath you probably wouldn't want to because the tonearm is spring loaded and changing the height could change the effective tracking force. I guess the solution with the Sound Burger is that you can take it to the shop and see if the record plays on it before you buy? Of course, that leaves you out in the cold if you already own the warped record...
I have one of these - family had it as a kid and I've managed to hold on to it. My controller has the same problem - and I've long thought it should be a trivial pot replacement - which I've never gotten around to doing. Anyway, 5min in and I'm writing this. Off to watch the rest 👍 Edit: great that that was so easy to fix! Motivates me to fix mine. Further evidence btw that yours was poked with in the past, I'm pretty sure it's not meant to be power hard-wired in. I'll confirm my memory when I dig up mine from whichever deep box it's in, is that both controller and power were 3.5mm audio jacks
@@CBitsTech confirmed (seems I can't link to imgur? anyway I've put a "gallery" at "hanimex-666-pong-game-console-9fHN7bQ" (tl;dr: cable well soldered to the pot in the secondary controller, secondary controller with a 3.5mm jack to the main, and power has a 2.5mm jack) It'll be some time yet before I get a chance to attempt a fix and test though
These burgers aren't perfect, but are better than they have any right to be. Mine doesn't embarrass itself next to tables that cost 5x as much. The clearance on the platter is an issue as you mentioned, but the lack of antiskate can also be a problem; I find that records are more prone to skipping on this player because it wants to drag towards the middle without that antiskate.
I grabbed a lot of 100 minidiscs off Ebay a few months ago and went through them too… I found maybe 2 artists I identified using Shazam, and a bunch of recorded Japanese college classes. Other than that, most was just the Japanese equivalent to factory-created US mainstream pop. 🙂
Nice collection and some interesting and varied artists. If you like Brazilian music, make sure you check out some of the Tropicalia artists like Caetano Veloso, George Ben, Os Mutantes, Gal Costa etc..Beck is a huge fan of Tropicalia.
Thanks Rob. I just read up on Tropicalia, very interesting. Maybe a little early for my tastes, but I'll certainly give your artists recommendations a try. I like to use RU-vid Music to pic a few tracks from an artist, then start their 'radio' function to find other similar tracks, making a playlist as I go from the suggestions. I'll do that over the coming weeks while sitting in the garden, thanks. If Beck was a fan, it will be interesting to see if I can find some of the sounds that influcenced him.
Remove the plastic clip from the metal battery contact on the battery door. Open the door when you put in the minidisc. Then lever off the side opposite to the headphone jack. If I remember correctly. Good luck.
Thank you for this video! I recently bought this exact unit and it was in excellent condition apart from the Menu/Enter button not being pressable. I opened it and found that the dome had collapsed, and this video taught me that I could lift them up so I was able to push the dome back out from the rear. However, when I put it all back together, the button still doesn't work even if the dome is now 'clicking' as it should. Could the dome be permanently damaged somehow so that it doesn't make proper contact, or could it be that the contact point is damaged from the dome being constantly 'pressed down' for a really long time?
I'd clean the circuit board under the dome with IPA or contact cleaner, and replace the dome with one which isn't used as much (and clean that one too). That would be my next step. Good luck.
Thanks. Check them as you would for a AA rechargeable. Essentially, voltage and voltage under load is all you can check with a multimeter. I suppose internal resistance, but there's no benchmark for that. This video might help ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WfoQPp8-Nrc.htmlsi=RxgQtyl4JQhFFVrZ
Accoustic Engine refers to sound equaliser presets such as 'Club' or 'Normal'. Type_R is an improvement in recording for slightly better sound quality. Later, Type-S was a slightly better playback quality.
Was the orange medicine a vitamin C medicine, like Haliborange? There was a clear red cough medicine that tasted pretty bad. But there was a pink one that looks like calamine lotion, but was a pleasant tasting one for something. It's driving me mad, I can't remember.
@@CBitsTech what ever it was you can’t buy it now. I suspect there were a couple of generations of 70’s kids that unsuspectingly opted in to medical trials. I think I’m ok 🥴
