Looking forward to part 2. I hope you get the md working too.

Thanks. I hope I get the MD working too. I have two other cassette deck hi-fi units already, so I really want the MD part of this to work.

Once you have fixed the sensor on the MD you may find the auto-reverse cassette head is a bit sticky when it changes side, so you can look to lubricate it. I had to do this recently on a Denon cassette deck.

Thanks for the tip. I'll have a look when I change the belts.

I think these have a Sony MD mechanism. It may not be this, but on some Sony decks there is a sensor that detects when a disc is inserted, that over time (it's made of plastic) wears and causes issues with loading that can result in stuff like this. Most commonly it causes the eject mechanism to freak out and intermittently detect a disc causing it to continuously attempt to eject, but I suspect if the tolerance was to go the other way it could result in this sort of thing happening, it doesn't properly detect there's a disc in when loaded and spits it back out. It may just be a case of spraying the sensor switches with contact cleaner, or if it's similar to the fault I described earlier the fix is to bulk up the metal prong that triggers the sensor with some heat-shrink tubing. "Does Not Compute" documented this fix in a RU-vid video.

Ah, brilliant. I had thought it might be a sensor. I'll look for the @DoesNotCompute video, thanks.

Yes I can confirm I have see that other video and it seems to be an issue with minor tolerances of the used switch - good luck fixing it! @@CBitsTech

Thanks. Fix completed, subject to a longer test with a few MDs. Contact cleaner was the solution, but finding the sensor was tricky. Video to follow. Thanks.

Mecha error is usually tied to dirty contacts in the sensors that detect the load state. Some contact cleaner and working the switches a bunch should clean them.

Thanks. That's what I was thinking. All I've got to do is find the sensor/switches through a Minidisc sized slot 😁

@@CBitsTech Have seen this Kind of trouble with the MD-Part on a Repair-Video for an SONY Deck lately... Due to the sticking Pinch-Roller my guess is the Belt went to goo... Would send my Family off for a Weekend-Trip to Granny and have my self a Teardown Party. Clean everything up and while in there change all Belts + Pinch-Roller. Checked fleaBay for this Model and found a Service-Kit for sale in the UK, MD-Belt is missing of course! Since these seem to be 'generic' every other Belt for an other MD-Deck should do the Job! Nice Videos, please keep them coming. Cheers from Germany!

@@azuranit8702 Funny you should comment when you did, I was actually shooting the MD repair part of this video. As usual, I think @sjm4306 got it right in that it was the disc-detector sensor that needed cleaning, I think. Well, the MD wasn't spat out again after cleaning that contact/switch. It still wouln't read the MD though, but I think I fixed that too. New video coming up in a few weeks, probably. I like the sound of a weekend teardown party! If only I could get the family to leave me for the weekend. Oh, and I found the service-kit on eBay too before I saw your comment, but it's pretty expensive for the use I'll get from this unit. I just received a boombox belt kit from that seller, so I'll see how good that one is, and I've asked another supplier if they have a blt kit for this model too. It's all getting a bit expensive with all these repairs for RU-vid, but if I fix this cassette deck, that will be a third video on this unit. Thanks for the comment, the suggestions, and the research.

I remember Techmoan had simular problem when he got a mini system from Japan (that Aiwa from around 2003-2004) but that problem was caused before he exchanged old belt to new one (by removing a disc from mecha when he torndown the mini system), so there's a little chance that previous owner tried to remove a disc (while the belt was weak enough even for ejecting a disc). P.S. I also don't think "MD Mecha Error" was caused by shipping (like one rough shake of a box (when it was in delivery stage) and that metal bracket lowered down thinking there is a disc inside the mecha)...

Right, thanks. I'll go back and watch Techmoan's video again for clues.
