Hey, my name's Jordan Watson. I'm a qualified and experienced secondary school English teacher and private tutor. 🎓

On this channel, we explore how students can improve their knowledge and understanding of English as a subject, particularly at GCSE level. We examine what exam boards are looking for in student answers, and I provide guidance and walkthroughs on specific skills, methods and texts. In almost every video, I draw from my own experiences as an educator to provide you with the best advice I possibly can in the hopes of making English more accessible to you so that you can confidently engage with the subject and make strides towards reaching your potential.

what's the difference between Gothic and horror?
@EnglishWithWatson
@EnglishWithWatson 21 день назад
Good question! Gothic is a subgenre of horror characterised by dark, atmospheric settings, supernatural themes and often a historical or Victorian aesthetic. Horror, in contrast, is a broader genre focused on evoking fear through various means, not limited to specific settings or time periods. While all Gothic works contain horror elements, not all horror is Gothic.

Hi sir, with the modal paragraph, how many marks would that be, is that just half the answer? Or is it detailed enough in a small amount of space that it is 20 marks.

Isn’t the inspector a ghoul, and not real? He literally predicted the future.
@EnglishWithWatson
@EnglishWithWatson 2 месяца назад
It’s left ambiguous who, or what, the Inspector was. Some people interpret his name “Goole” as relating to ‘ghoul’, as you said, and so infer he was a kind of supernatural being. Other people argue he is a physical manifestation of the Birlings’ guilt. There are many different theories but no definitive answer, which was intentional from Priestley.

sir for this question is using structural/language techniques a must or can you also say "the writer uses the (phrase) ____" because i did a exam and i wrote 2 paragraphs like this and 2 seperate paragraphs with specific techniques.
@EnglishWithWatson
@EnglishWithWatson 3 месяца назад
Ultimately what the question wants you to do is explain how the methods/techniques used by the writer leads to you either agreeing or disagreeing with the given statement. If you analysed the 'phrase' then that is still technically a method; if you identified the method used (e.g. metaphor, simile, adjective, noun phrase, etc.) and analysed how it leads you to have the opinion that you had, then that's opening you up to accessing the higher marks. That being said, if you analysed the 'phrases' to a good level, you'll likely be fine. 🙂

@4hm3d.7 3 месяца назад
@@EnglishWithWatson thanks sir, i was so stressed because in exam i forgot the fact that my teacher repeatedly told me to say the technique is imagery because everything is imagery .Though for some reason i didnt write it, i thought "phrase" would be enough :(

@@EnglishWithWatson also like i said i also wrote 2 paragraphs specifically focusing on techniques (adverb and exclamatory sentence) so i hope ill get atleast some marks 🙃

Hey man how may paragraphs am I aiming to write here
@EnglishWithWatson
@EnglishWithWatson 3 месяца назад
I’d aim for two detailed paragraphs that contain in-depth analysis of the writer’s methods. Identify two key points in the given statement then decide if you agree/disagree with each. That’ll give you two points to analyse in a paragraph each.
@zplaysiphones2211
@zplaysiphones2211 3 месяца назад
@@EnglishWithWatson aright thanks also can I structure it like I agree/disagree with student Pee Pee This proving such and such point is right /wrong
@EnglishWithWatson
@EnglishWithWatson 3 месяца назад
Yes, that should be fine so long as you analyse your evidence in detail and make sure you link it back to your main point. Do that in both paragraphs and you should have a solid response. 👍🏻

Thank you! In terms of the papers, AQA has recently decided to make it somewhat difficult for us to publicly access their past papers. All I can suggest is if you search on Google for AQA GCSE English Language practice papers, you should find plenty to use. 🙂

just under 3 weeks until lit paper 1- what revision techniques would you recommend?
@EnglishWithWatson
@EnglishWithWatson 4 месяца назад
The best thing you can be doing at this point is practise, practise, practise. If possible, try answering exam questions under timed exam conditions, then identify areas that you find challenging or that you have gaps in knowledge so that you can address them before the real exam. If possible, try to get feedback on your attempts from a teacher or tutor.
@ftlurk6820
@ftlurk6820 3 месяца назад
@@EnglishWithWatson Thankyou and how long would you advise planning and answering the questions for lit paper 1?
@EnglishWithWatson
@EnglishWithWatson 3 месяца назад
I'd recommend that for both questions on Literature Paper 1, you plan for 10 mins, write for 35 mins, then spend 5 mins proofreading. The proofreading is especially important for the Shakespeare question as there are 4 additional marks available for your spelling, punctuation and grammar. This will leave you with 5 minutes overall which can be used to read through the questions and extracts prior to answering them.

@user-hr3cf3qw9p

Or do you have to use other methods
@EnglishWithWatson
@EnglishWithWatson 4 месяца назад
Hi there. If you mean comparing the use of verbs and adjectives as methods then yes, absolutely, so long as you ensure that the examples you choose convey something about each writers’ viewpoint.
