I've finally turned totally windows-free last week so the stats are outdated. 🤣 Really, if you don't make music, there is no reason to stay in Windows. If you have troubles switching to linux is because you use Arch, use Ubuntu or some friendlier distro on a daily basis, that's at least what kept me reluctant for so long. GPUs work, Windows apps work, games work, multidisplay works, high refresh rate works, and Ubuntu has a pretty beautiful GUI.

Microsoft are the reason windows loses users, I would have stayed a very blissfully-ignorant casual computer user all my life it weren't for the increasingly user-adverse experience in windows reaching a point where it became necessary for me to learn how to A. fight back, and then B. learn how to escape the need to constantly fight altogether.

your narrative about India is misleading. When you have a worldwide 4,5% Linux usage and it is huge, how come when having 3% MacOS in India is not huge when you are talking about a country that most people do not have the ability to buy a Mac? I would say it is huge. You need to get away from just comparing a number and be able to look behind the scenes otherwise the numbers cannot tell the whole story

I am the 10% - Steam deck isn't doing this. Some, sure, but a lot of people are being pushed away from Microsoft because they know the writing is on the wall with AI literally recording your screen. There's no way it can store everything you've ever done locally. people would run out of storage space after a year even with a large SSD. it's nuts to think that this is possible. if it isn't sending the data out, how will the AI know what you've done and be able to "recall" it for you? asinine. Everything you've ever done, bank transactions, passwords, all recorded. Companies are taking note too. These businesses are fiends about their data, not just because of liability to their customers both enterprise and individual, but they have tax data, employee data. you can't do this shit and keep that trust. Long Live Linux. (I'm on Nobara btw)

It looks like Norway data is severely undersampled because those fluctuations are much too high? Like where would such a huge jump in Windows usage a year ago come from, at the cost of OSX and Linux usage both? Also just because Dell and Acer don't sell Linux computers doesn't mean people installed it manually, i mean it could be large organisations like governments making the move to Linux thus their IT is doing a sort of automated mass migration, similar to how PC vendors populate the computers with an operating system, and India and other countries could have local companies which mass produce Linux computers, because why not, people have to pay licenses now but nobody wants to be paying an extra $80 Microsoft tax if they don't have to.

Linux is booming because it keeps getting better and better, recently it's monthly, not yearly. My first Linux experience was back in 2009 and it was Debian and it wasn't bad even back then, these days I use Mint on 3 and Arch on my main PC. Never had any troubles. There are some workarounds you have to do sometimes, however Windows has it's issues as well, I do use Windows on my company's PC, and in my experience it's more flawed than most of Linux distros. @@Vitorfernandes83 Well i get where you're coming from, i've had the same issues when i got started too. Linux encourages you to learn in depth about how an operating system works, it's not for everybody but its fascinating when you start to get the gist of it, its beautiful dude. When i got started, i was panicking, now there are thousands of awesome videos so you are safe, The issue you are talking about can be fixed within few minutes, getting their was hard for me too. well in windows we know when a program fucks up, we either get the task manager or ALT F4 FTW. In similar ways linux has its own ways. It's community built! There are new concepts to learn which gives you these "Ahh Ha" moments. Then you'll end up quickly fixing them. You have no idea how fast linux can get, how easy your work can get, how unique you can make your own setup look, the freedom it gives you is insane. Like i said its not for everybody. My Productivity went through the roof. Don't even talk about resource usage, its INSANE. Be patient, Checkout UNIXPORN on reddit, if you like what you see, you can slowly get started. It's a journey man, a unique very usefull skill to learn. The knowledge you get from linux has multiple applications, your router, your smartphone, heck any smart device, you get this magical knowledge of how they work, you can start modding them outta nowhere. its crazy man! I ended up modding my own devices. It's nuts. I would like to ask you to install a firewall like portmaster and set the outbound rules to prompt. The amount of information that windows collects, the issues you face when you try to block them will make anyone go insane. That's a long rant, Try it out dude, it takes time but i wish you all the best <3 Cheers!

Yeah no. These stats are fake af. And and and you should not be using such biased stats, if anything steam hardware survey might even be more correct than this. Statcounter is based on website script that steal visitors data. Its a paid product, paid data stealer so then: 1. Very few people and companies use it so it doesnt have wide enough reach. Because the price is PER PAGE VIEWS, the more popular a page becomes the less willing contenent creator is for wasting money on it. While basicaly all of the biggest websites have some sort of stat collecting, its all internal made. 2. Its biased: Data spikes like the one u describe now can be EASILY faked by suddenly asking Linux websites to get the thing. Because its web data stealer, the data it collects is biasad on whats the website content about. A website about mac os things will have massive % of mac users. Websites about linux things will have close to 80% linux users. 2a. All you have to do is produce a website with some samsung phone guides, put a stat counter on it and suddenly you will discover suprise suprise most users have samsung web as web browser so thererefore it means its most popular browser ? no its not. All it needs is a website or 3 about linux, getting statcounter and suddenly your linux stats will fake-increase.

If you could desktop android and ChromeOS as a Linux distro then it'll be more like 0.5% hands on time. Purely because it is less useful..usable. real question would be how many people use Linux desktops as their only device/ primary device, world wide.. ultimately using poor metrics hurts linux as a whole.. that alone tells you the 4% is junk data. the reason for multiple Linux

4% +- several % sounds plausible. But the point was that no attention was given to error margins in their data... also no clarity on unique users, session time, installations, or what fraction of reality the data came from. 4% (if we believe it) share has taken over 30years.. but that's fragmented to the different desktop environments. it's a shame.. And once you're subsumed inside the browser the OS is mostly irrelevant... Which is why non-browser usage time is a more valuable aspiration than in-browser anything for the actual OS value. Unlike the old days, operating systems are given free now. everyone should be able to use any OS or Many OSs. it's not clear what the value of counting the desktop market share is either. mobile is where all the volume/differentiation is and the lighter apple laptops are already beyond the legacy definition of what a desktop is also.

Linux having a low marketshare was never the problem. The problem with Linux is that the 4.4% is divided into 1000 distros with varying levels of security, varying levels of compatibility, varying levels of layout and structure... It's a complete mess and a lot of people already give up at step-1 "picking the distro to use". I don't want to see "Linux" hitting 4.4%, I want to see a distro hit that % and actually be the face of the Linux community. I don't care which distro, I just want "a" distro to become the main go-to OS for everyone that's looking to transition from Windows. Instead of what's happing right now... If I go into a Linux community and ask which distro to install, I'm gonna get 20 different answers and real reasons to why I should pick this or that distro. Yep, fragmentation is a real problem, but it is a direct consequence of Linux distros usually being community driven. There are of course a few good projects that try to unify Linux (ie systemd), but a lot of people don't like them, because "they don't follow the unix philosophy". If we want to make a truly modern Linux distro, without fragmentation, that would just work, we'd have to abandon old unix traditions that are not applicable anymore and focus on modern computing.

"no reason to stick to Windows." On Linux I have less fps, heavy fps drops happen more often. I would have to buy a more expensive graphics card, and still these drops would not be eliminated. I would spend a lot more on a card to have a similar fps average, the strong drops I would not eliminate. I don't see the point. There are other disadvantages. Like an unstable ever-changing ecosystem. E.g. several incompatible wayland implementations, lately very unstable and full of bugs KDE6. Problems with different programs and games on different distributions. Continuously inferior hardware support (laptops). I would say that a few years ago desktop linux had fewer bugs and was more stable than today.

@@piotrc966 What you said is correct but i like to look at the trend in the future. Here, a little context: Windows pros (this part did not change lately) - Everyone knows and develops programs for it - Everything works"?" (as it was designed for it) Windows cons (oh boy this is the part is getting worst lately) - paid "?" - Various security problems - Microsoft abusing it's costumer base, obligatory Microsoft account, obligatory upgrades etc . - Ads and subscription model incoming Linux pros (This part is getting better) - free"?" - Porting programs from windows is becoming a seamless experience !!! - Some manufacturers jumped the wagon on supporting Linux drivers natively - Steam is standardizing gaming on Linux. ( In the future we will have everything we need mapped and translated from windows. Drivers + Vulkan + proton + wine + steam library. this part will be endlessly polished with time and big players are comming together, even NVidia ) Linux cons ( This has remained about the same) - Most manufacturers do not support Linux yet. It will be some time for many of them to wake up - distribution fragmentation - everything else you pointed out and more etc...

@@piotrc966 I dont have less fps or drops in linux compared to windows, I think it depends on what you are using. If you want stability and to not be changing much you can use debian for example. Wayland complaints are fair enough, it is slowly becoming mainstream but it still have some quirks here and there, idk about kde since I dont use it
