He is desensitised, yeah, sure…the problem was and still is - already very good to see in the first video, he is not aggressive, he is annoyed by his owner. She does not want to play, she does not want to run, she does not want to do anything, what a Saluki wants to have! And so he barks on all dogs, get away, I cannot play with you in any way, because I am not allowed to…and that he learnt some maybe years and gets even „aggressive“ by seeing another dog… …and by the way a Golden Retriever is never a good friend of a Saluki, not for play, not for saying hallo…so what they are doing has nothing to do with a really good and naturally behaved Saluki…sorry, she should get a Chivava or some other pocket dog for showing around but not one that is a real selfcreating hunting sightdog, that needs an owner with class, behaviour, confidence and some action time to time…I am sorry for the Saluki… At the end, the tail is nearly up, not completely, but somehow more than at the beginning, because they deal with the dog and he his mentally not forced to play on his own…Salukis quite special to train and to have, but very easy to read if you deal with them…could write books to that dog and its behaviour here, it’s so obvious to see…
When breeding dogs the idea is to breed like nature The closer u breed to the way nature breeds the better ur results Nature removes the weak, sick, disabled, and damn rite stupid When u breed dogs it's not for the feint of heart tough choices must be made in the present to benifit in the future or ur not a breeder your someone who just has puppies Real Breeders are few and far between these days Woke nonsense is making it hard for the real ones Wokeness is weakness Nature is brutal reality
It’s neat to hear about his early years of dog training. I remember back in the 90s when I was about 16 years old reading the Leerburg website articles in my beginning years of learning how to train dogs. Michael is a wealth of knowledge. I’ve never met him in person but hope to someday. Thanks for doing this interview! Edited: typo
Interesting to see how we have transitioned from treats to corrections. It's expected. Also your sensor or humour in impeccable, you manage to make me laugh in every onenof your videos. What age and when do you start using a prong? Ecollars? I was thinking of combining a slip lead snd treats for my lil guy 8 1/2.
The APDT conferences help a lot. Attended a lot of those over the years - Ian Dunbar, Terry Ryan, Sue Sternberg, John Fischer, Job Michael Evans, Gary Wilson, Leslie Nelson - still use her recall exercise in my group classes - works like a charm. Cheryl Smith aggression seminar too. I volunteered at animal shelters to help get my hands on dogs and get them into a forever home too. Lots of shelters and rescue groups need foster people too if you don't have time for the shelters. Joining your local obedience club can help too. Some actually offer train the trainer classes so you get actual instruction on how to teach classes. (Praise individually , criticize in general. Like generalize so no one thinks it's them making the mistake or error. Never talk bad about others, just say why your way is better.) I actually became a member of the dog club I now teach at back when I was a teenager trying to convince my Mom I could handle a dog. She wasn't an animal person so it didn't work, but gave me a start to be around dogs, assist with classes, without actually owning a dog. Made up for lost time once on my own. Vet assistant jobs - some vets actually offer training (by someone who comes in) classes now. Just going to many different classes too. I still do that and have been teaching for years. You can always learn something from someone. Hope that helps.
One of the things I learned from another trainer was to get your dog used to wearing a muzzle, even if you have a wonderful dog, especially if you travel with your dog. If anything bad happens to your dog, the first thing a vet will do is put a muzzle on your dog, so why freak your dog out twice - once with the muzzle and once with whatever the vet has to do with the dog. I now use this in all of my classes now. Bring in my Hound of the Baskervilles muzzle and fwd Chirag Patel's video on muzzle training. I also explain how it actually helped my younger, more fearful Dobe develop more confidence. Had the muzzle on for people. Would go to tractor supply with his muzzle on, people would come right up to him to pet and say Hi - he loved it. Amazing transformation. Plus any kind of Nose Work helps build a dog's confidence. Baebae's training if interested in competing and getting titles fast, helps by eliminating quite a bit. Even her pups that are competing are getting titles. Hope that helps.
Also helps to get your footwork down pat. Whichever side you walk the dog on, step off on the foot closest to the dog - it's an extra cue to your dog, oh yeah, following that leg. So when you practice a stay or a wait (and there is a difference for me: wait means but wait, there's more; stay means: you're safe, nothing bad is going to happen to you - so no stay at the vet office - I will come back to heel position BEFORE giving your release word), you step off on the foot furthest from the dog - again, extra cue that the dog is waiting there until released or given another cue. Rewarding them on the same side of your body that you want them prevents tripping over the dog as well as them trying to get to the hand farthest away from the dog - mechanics and timing. What did I just reward? Whatever gets rewarded and reinforced, gets repeated. What the dog thinks is rewarding that is. Thank you for this video - especially the part about stop punishing them and instead focus on where you want them, what you want them to do and reward that so it's sure to get repeated. Hope that helps.
If you're even remotely in to dog training you need to know who Michael ellis is. He's hands down one of the best trainers out. He's your favorite trainers favorite trainer.
Michael Ellis is amazing. Definitely one of my favourite trainers to listen to. His view on in breeding is the first time Ive listened to something he says that he seems wrong about. Some of the recessive genes could be there and the dog could be bred before the a disease shows up later in life. Realistically one person is not going to control a whole breeding program either. Continuous close in breeding is shown to have a negative effect on the health and resilience of animals.
Great interview thank you.......fyi the interviewer is only in the left ear and Ellis is on the right side. I could only hear the answers because i can only wear the earbud in the right ear.
The Mal was more used as tracking, herding , airport dogs nose dogs to the public. They had to implement other herders to get the early bitters we have today. The gsd was on its way out due to poor breeding and bad hips. Mercy dogs were implemented and show dog and ruined the genetics 🧬 How does a professional trainer become a breeder, the Internet? Military and police dogs go through hundreds of dogs who don't have it or have it but short lived young lives.these so called trainers being breeders just put dogs together they train but not based on purification 👀
Show me a finished dog?!! Everyone has to train and keep training 👀don't they call that refreshing 😂in the sport world 🌎🌍 Sport is not personal protection, no reason why sport trainers would advertise that other than money goal 🤔 If you're not a personal protection/ defense trainer you don't know personal protection. If you say you do your teaching are backed by police, military, and sports. A sport dog can't be reactive and a defense/personal protection dogs should be based on space/approximatey. Most books and his teachings are breed based as well (gsd/mals).
@@CharlieTheCaneCorso all his information came from books based on police, military and shutzhund/sport. The dogs gsd, mals and herders. Personal protection is based on what?
REALLY enjoyed this interview, Nick! A couple of my favorite books on teaching are The Talent Code by Coyle, and What the Best College Teachers Do by Bain. A lot of the teaching discussion reminded me of these books.
An X pen not just for the first night though, the X pen size depending on the dog, this would be good place for it to get acclimated to its new living situation. The dog doesn't have free run of the house until it's adapted to the house rules, this also helps with establishing proper bathroom habits and eliminates potential destructiveness.
Any one interested in breeding and genetic look up Kenny troiano and the breeders academy Back crossing, linebreeding, inbreeding all very useful techniques when u have the knowledge and understanding
Why do you assume that this is an aggressive dog? Because this Dog « reacts » to the sight of other dogs or people? What do you think is he looking for when he is barking ?
Lmao, sorry I don't mean to be rude, but when u talk about the TV remote, for once I laugh thinking about it instead of being extremely disrespected and upset... Because not having one for 2 months now , because my dog chewed the first one, I finally purchased a universal remote just to leave it on the couch when i left the house, he chewed and destroyed that one as well And just recently switching home internet Wi-Fi services I could not control the TV without that remote because the TV and the phone remote app would have to be on the same internet connection and I cannot get the TV to do anything but go on and switch channels and volume and input with the buttons that are on a TV making my expensive internet bill worthless because it's why I purchased it to begin with was to be able to watch TV and have internet on the TV
