Impassioned reviews of the finest movies to fill your evenings. A guide to the greatest Art house, Independent, International, Silent and blockbuster movies in history.
Haha, guilty. 😊 One of my all-time favourite actors and an amazing talent. Holding off on reviewing The discreet charm of the bourgeoisie, as I don't want to overwhelm people with her movies
Aquirre and Fitzcarraldo are peak method acting/directing: To make a movie about men blinded by ambition going into the jungle only to fall to madness and sacrifice everything for the goal you have to take men blinded by ambition, get them into the jungle, have them fall to madness and sacrifice everything for the goal (and pray to whatever gods may be that someone retains enough sanity to keep the cameras rolling).
It's very interesting to compare the two films. Such wildly different takes on the same source material. A real shame Mother Joan hasn't been exposed to the same size audience as The Devils
Overall , I like your description of Federico Fellini's film masterpiece LA DOLCE VITA, but you incorrectly described Marcello Mastroianni's character as a "Paparazzi" , he's a newpaper writer who appears to work for the Italian tabloid ,he does hang around wirh an actual "paparazzi ", played by Italian actor Walter Santesso, and in fact this film added this word to the lexicon. Also , the woman he's living with "Emma" portrayed by French actress Yvonne Furneaux , is not his "wife", but his girl friend. You failed to mention the beautiful music score written by the great Nino Rota and the dramatic cinematography by Otello Martelli ( although alot of the film was shot on sets in Cinemacitta, one gets the feeling of actually being in the vibrate center of Rome on the Via Venito ), the imanagative production design by Leo Catozzo and the stylish costumes designed by Piero Gherardi ( who could forget Anita Ekberg's remarkable dress). LA DOLCE VITA is one of my favorite films and I am glad to see that it is being shown to a new generation of film lovers.
Dirk Bogarde is one of my favorite British actors. His versatility and range are virtually unmatched. He has been in practically every genre and played every roll.....from drama to comedy, from sinister to sophisticated and the viewing audience is never disappointed. I put him right up their with Olivier and Le Mesurier.
I just found your channel and tomorrow will be binging because you've done so many of ny faves and all the rest I'm interested in! Thank you so much for your time, sir!❤
What a marvellous review. Thank you. Don't think I could watch the actual movie but gained a lot from your perpective. One can imagine, after all, and sometimes that is enough for sensitive souls.
Thank you for your kind words. It's greatly appreciated. It's a shame, really, as it's such a brave and insightful piece of art, but it's not a film I could haphazardly recommend without a degree of forewarning. Some of the imagery is deeply unsettling and potentially triggering for many.
Charlotte Rampling is a wonderful when young beautiful British actress. She played Hannah Wild in the Superlative Seven episode of The 60's "The Avengers". Many wish that she had followed Emma Peel/Dame Diana Rigg instead of Linda Thorson. I agree she would have been more in the same league as an actress.
Both the beautiful Charlotte Rampling lost out and "The Avengers" could have had a perfect replacement for Dame Diana Rigg. Ultimately the audience lost out! Patrick Macnee later reported that Diana Rigg would have stayed longer(at least until OHMSS) if he had asked and producers would have paid her what she was truly worth. 57 years later I still enjoy the Emma Peel "The Avengers". The superlative Seven had not only the then gorgeous Charlotte but the later very famous Donald Southerland.@@A_Movie_to_Accompany
I’m a student, studying film, first year of uni and I’ve just come across your account and I absolutely love your work. It’s all really well put together, editing wise. Also very well articulated, I love this theme of pitch black nights… keep up the amazing work!
