The Overseas Press Club of America was founded in 1939 in New York by a group of foreign correspondents. The OPC seeks to maintain an international association of journalists working in the United States and abroad; to encourage the highest standards of professional integrity and skill in the reporting of news; to help educate a new generation of journalists; to contribute to the freedom and independence of journalists and the press throughout the world, and to work toward better communication and understanding among people.
Terry was my neighbor in upstate NY while he was teaching at Syracuse University. I used to call him the Renaissance Man because his knowledge was boundless (and he was a hell of a good cook!). His enthusiasm for his students and teaching was infectious. And the stories he could tell! Farewell Terry, knowing you was a great pleasure. My condolences to his family on the passing of one of the great ones.
This is incredibly moving and anyone who experienced losing their loved one to a jail cell anywhere on the planet can relate. I was moved to tears watching each person honor this man and especially touched by his beloved daughter Sulome’s experience of her love for him. Bless all those who cared for this brave man.
I had the pleasure of meeting Lulu in March 1995 as fellow backpackers in Nong Khai, northern Thailand, then later enjoying a short friendship while back in UK as her early career took off... and I emigrated to NZ. Audrey … today, a note from Top was in a file I opened. Each year at this time since his passing, )& on many other days!) I am reminded of Top’s excellent impact on so many and upon global journalism.❤ Of course, for me, Top is never “past tense” … he’s present in assessing the world and news. I would say they are more free in China than us here in the US guys. We are not even able to watch Russian media owing to the systematic banning. We aren’t even allowed to know the official speeches of Lavrov, which might be important - but out of bounds. In China they have access to more diverse information and readily read the Wall St Journal as well as media from all around the world without the extraordinary censorship (including Assange etc) that we’re repressed with.
