I still have my first guitar, I had been saving up for most of my childhood to buy a Fender Telecaster, I had been tempted to buy a cheap copy but my dad told me I would regret it and those guitars were not the best and would cost additional money to make them playable, I had learned to play using my dads 68 goldtop and 63 Burns Vista Sonic. In 1984 I was gifted some money for passing my exams and finally had enough money to buy the Telecaster I had coveted for so long. When I got to the local guitar store they had three Telecasters in stock, all three had issues and so I was about to leave and go to the city to try and find one. The salesman brought out a Squier Telecaster, I had never heard of Squier but this guitar was perfect, the build quality was spot on, the set up was perfect and it sounded awesome, |I even got to try it with the same amp I had at home, a 73 WEM Dominator MKII. I couldn't figure out why this same model was so good but so cheap, I thoughtthey had made a mistake with the price, the salesman gave me some old pony that Fenders were called Squier in Japan. I have kept this guitar in very good condition despite gigging it during the mid '80s to late '90s. I inherited my dads guitars when he passed away and still have them to this day. I have sold so many guitars over the years that I later regretted and its the same story with my musical friends.

I have a Gretsch G2420T and I have never been satisfied with the tone. I have a 1964 Gretsch Single Anny, and I put two HS Filtertrons in it, and it really sounds great, nice mellow tone that is more like the Chet Atkins sound. I play gospel and the 64 Gretsch is perfect. I have replaced the BT-2S pups with black top filtertrons and It still does not have that mellow tone. Any suggestions on modifications.? When I installed the HS Filtertrons on the 64 Gretsch, I intentionally left out the tone control pot, since I never use the tone control anyway. Would this help the Streamliner to take out the tone control do you think? I know wiring is a pain, but I would undertake the task if it would help. Any sugestions appreciated.

At the time, along with the other MIC (made in china) modern player series, it was considered a decent value, visibly slightly worse/inconsistent quality compared to MIM standards, Blacktops* (fender was really pushing humbuckers during this time), and even squier CVs. Non-traditional specs, "unique" look, shinier poly lacquer and yellowish tint, and poor marketing (especially at a time the sonic youth, J masics, marr and VM offsets were bringing more traditional specs and snobbery by offset fans into the mainstream amidst a growing mainstream "indie" wave) were probably the nails in the coffin. Not terrible guitars, the tele and jag in particular have made names for themselves, perhaps just not the right context. the one thing i remember OSG and other forums praising this for was the black block inlay/maple fretboard combo (a first in a long time for fender JMs at the time, if not outright)
@promognome
@promognome 10 дней назад
@@hiroprotagonitis The block fret markers are definitely a bonus. Makes it look more expensive! 😄
@gringogreen4719
@gringogreen4719 10 дней назад
From an Offset player's point of view, this guitar is really more for a non Offset player than for an Offset player. The TOM style bridge, humbuckers, and stripped down controls isn't really going to scratch that Surf/Indie fix. It's also visually all over the place, so maybe an Oddball guitar that was ordered (or Fender made the shop take it) and just sat around. For $300 I would have bought this too but it would have taken me awhile to figure out what I want to do with it. So yeah, not really something and Offset Player would seek out. I have a 2006 LTD Viper 400 prototype that I put a Bigsby on (and also push/pulls for the stock Seymour Duncan pickups) and that would be the guitar that would compare to this in my collection.
@promognome
@promognome 10 дней назад
@@gringogreen4719 That's a great explanation. A player that is really into the offset is going to want all the options that go with it. More modes to experiment with. This one might more appeal to someone that just wants the look.
@gringogreen4719
@gringogreen4719 10 дней назад
@@promognome Thanks. This really is the "Tele Formula" in a Offset shape (also why I bought my Viper) with two pickups, a volume, a tone, and a three way switch. I actually bought a Xaviere JT 100 to get the "Tele Formula" but in a more proper Jazzmaster format (I got the Wide Swing Tremolo like the one on here, a Import Jazzmaster bridge (not great but still the correct part), and two GFS Jazzmaster pickups). So this Jazzmaster really doesn't give you the Jazzmaster experience except the Offset body shape and the Wide Swing Tremolo. I didn't catch where this was made but Fender did have Chinese made guitars back around that time and if this was the case, then it would be an Oddball anyways. Again I really think the player for this would be an Alternative Rock fan like Bush, who doesn't really want to go far down the Offset "Rabbit Hole" because of setting up an Offset is usually NOTHING like a Strat or a Tele. You have to shim the neck, use heavier gauged strings and have a very different setup which both mentally and physically is asking a lot from a non Offset or even a Jazz Box player. I already play heavy gauge strings (11s on my Solid bodies, 12s on my Hollow bodies) so it just took some time to get used to the body. Mike Adams does great videos on Offsets if you ever need a Offset reference in the future. They are just different beasts from anything else (kinda like a Dobro).🤔
@promognome
@promognome 10 дней назад
@@gringogreen4719 Yup, this one is Chinese. Probably great for alt rock or punk where they stay in one position. I probably watched Mike Adams when doing research on this one. Now my algorithm is jammed with jag and jazzmaster vids 😄
@gringogreen4719
@gringogreen4719 10 дней назад
@@promognome His video on how to setup a Bigsby is also a must watch. I can also recommend the Reverend Guitars "Soft Spring" for a Bigsby is essential if you want those soft waivers (stock springs are too stiff) into that Blue Note territory. I will also tell you that using a Soft Spring, the handle is significantly lower (it may be a good thing or a not so good thing depending on the original height of the stock spring) than the original. As for Offsets with the Wide Swing Tremolo, you can buy replacement plates that essentially make them hardtail guitars too if a customer does not want the Trem (I mean why bother if you bought an Offset but the option exists).
@hiroprotagonitis
@hiroprotagonitis 10 дней назад

I was given a Squier in a deal once as a throw in and it was in the worst shape ive ever seen. Ended up being my best guitar. Squier SE STRAT. I started to research more and so i repaired the bridge, took the extra paint off the gaurd and it even had Hipshot locking turner's on it. Baseball neck that was flamed. The body was full thickness as well. The more research i did, the more i realized that i had more of a genuine STRAT than i even knew. It has a slab rosewood fretboard too! The neck pocket was chewed and the tremolo cavity was cut up. I ended up doing a relic to the body and found a veneer was added to the top and back so it took the relic like a king. Put some alnico staggered pickups in 1 and 2 and a duel blade in 3. Then i sheilded it and added a fender duel potentiometer with some cool vintage capacitors and a nice toggle for the Gilmore switching. This guitar is a beast and i cant sell the thing. To get a custom guitar like this is not cheap. The vintage wiring was added too along side with a new 5 way and jack. I did a fret leveling with the strings on with a Martin truss rod and the action is so low that I was even able to set the saddles where i wanted and then go from there. Dream guitar 🎸 i no longer want a Fender strat cause i can make one myself. They call me, fretzilahhh! Great video man! Check me out, I`ve got some show ans rell on my page.

Great video. New sub here. I know from experience there’s a very good chance this comes back. It’s flawed neck due to the grain pattern. If it ends up back on your bench may I suggest you repeat steam the process then drill a nice and straight 5.5mm hole at the headstock heal just under the low E and continue to drill towards the high E staying clear of tuner holes. (save the sawdust) Dip a 5mm rod in 2 part epoxy and sink it in. Leave clamped for 5 days. Mix sawdust with Titebond III to the patch hole.
