This entity is a mare though, with an e. Contrary to this, Jack claims in the episode that it comes from the Mara. The Mara is a villain from the Classic Doctor Who story "Kinda" and could be considered a species like Jack says as well as a spirit or a shared consciousness. The Mara can enter the world through dreams and possess people. This villain is based on a demon of the same name in Buddhism, and the episodes it appears in feature Buddhist themes. The wikipedia article on the Buddhist Mara does not mention dreams or nightmares however, so I wonder if Christopher Bailey also made a mental connection to the mares when he wrote "Kinda". The Torchwood episode definitely muddies the waters somewhat with Jack's remark.
Definitely the weakest episode of the show - we’re supposed to believe that the cybermen, who’s whole shtick is about removing the divisions amongst ourselves such as race, GENDER, nationality, & class in favor of uniformity, that they thought to give her a metal bikini and high heels? 🙄. And that those are somehow an emergency (ie a quick battlefield) version of their conversion upgrade to somehow help in fighting the Daleks at the battle of Canary Wharf? She didn’t even get the ranged weapon attack of the standard cyberman so how is this supposed to be used against the Daleks? It’s pointless sexualization of the actress. Having said that, even this episode has its good bits. The emotional impact on, and fleshing out of Ianto is nice, and I honestly didn’t predict that I would ever see a Cyborg v. Pterodactyl fight (though I don’t understand why she didn’t use her main electrical attack against it and instead was only trying to punch it?)

As someone who grew up in a very similar family to Kai I have a massive soft spot for him. He was made into a sociopath. His parents hated him and ostracized him for being “different.” I view him as a metaphor for being queer especially given he grew up during the AIDS crisis (he was born in 72), so it lines up. He did horrible evil things because he was backed into a corner.
“When your family decides you’re nothing but an irredeemable piece of trash, well, guess the best thing to do is prove them right, right?” Is something a lot of cult kids who got out can relate to. I know I do.
I really wanted you to upload this episode because I knew it was Elijah's entry but I didn't want to give any spoilers. This and the next one is my favorite.
#2 (Day one) and #4 (Cyberwoman) are my least favorite episodes of the season, so I'm glad you've put those behind you. My three favorites are some of the last ones - in chronological (not ranking) order: #9, #10 and #12. However, I will say that my fourth favorite would be #3 (Ghost Machine) as I really appreciate the way that story is told and the mystery is unraveled, while things that bother you there do not bother me as much. Series 1 in particular keeps driving home the fact that, despite posturing as one, this is anything but an elite team. You have witnessed how Gwen joined from a low ranking police officer position, you should not assume a tough selection and training process for the others. Instead, the team is made up of flawed individuals who make bad choices, both professionally and personally. While personally, I can excuse the lack of professionalism, I have also struggled with how the likability of the characters was often impeded by their questionable personal choices in this season, even if that was by design. I’m glad to say that it has been toned town in later seasons, though. As for the Sarah Jane Adventures, I sure would like to see your reactions to that. Great stories, occasionally infantile, but it can also carefully tackle difficult topics for a kids show such as Alzheimer’s and even homelessness. I think despite being requested it gets lower engagement numbers than the other shows, but since you are putting your reactions out for free anyway, you might not care much about that. The other question is “when”. I do recommend watching the pilot not too late, even if you don’t pick up the show, as Doctor Who leans into that at some point. Beyond the pilot, DW does not spoil SJA too much I think, so you could conceivably delay the rest of it until you are done with Torchwood. It would mean seeing some tie-ins to DW within SJA belatedly, however it would also mean not dosing down DW to a minority of your “Whoniverse” reactions. ETA: Oh yeah, guess who played John Lennon opposite Naoko Mori as Yoko Ono in "Lennon Naked"? Christopher Eccleston.

You're right not to act! It's refreshing to see someone admit to knowing what he actually knows. However, it is true that Elijah has incredible charisma, the actor and the writers were very good at creating this air of intimidation around him without actually seeing him do anything until the Salvatores arrived.

I know this is from five months ago but as a Doctor Who fan for years, I want you to know that while there are many sad and heartbreaking moments in Doctor Who, there are also many, many fun moments and many wonderful characters in Doctor Who. More fun and friendship that sadness in Doctor Who. I hope you like it!
