Finally someone else with a collection like mine. Not too many people have collections like ours and others don't understand the beauty and rarity of our collection. Another thing that is rare are videos like these. Tha k you for this series. I don't know where you are located, but there is a massive woodshop in Burlington, Ontario, Canada that is called: Exotic Woods. They carry all of these woods with mild to extreme figure.

I know it is not super pricey but, it probably isn't cheap. What about Mesquite?

Hi, for knife handles, is it safe to say african blackwood is one of the most durable wood and least likely to expand or crack over time?

Love your channel ! I started working with exotic woods and looked at all your videos! Keep doing what you are doing. I have one question for you , maybe you can help me. I turn small object penblank size or smaller and i have difficulties with bocote. When i sand it that beautiful yellow goes greenish.my lathe speed is around1500rpm. Do you have any idea what to do?
@progressiveideasinwood6077
@progressiveideasinwood6077 4 месяца назад
Glad that you enjoy the videos. As far as bocote turning colors, I am not a pen turner, but the couple of things I would suggest...if you are sanding on the lathe its cross grain so the darker color might be muddying it up. I would suggest trying turning the lathe off for the final grit and sanding with the grain. Please let me know if that worked!.

Mesquite and eucalyptus grows here in Arizona. Love both of these for turning. Both have distinct odors when milled. Mesquite has a great aroma when burned in a fireplace.

Nice video! What about Lignum Vitae? It seems it has gotten rather hard to find. I just used my last piece I bought 10 years ago or so. I make wooden toys and like it as accent wood like bumpers or airplane propellers. It also turns very well. Regards, Kevin

‏what about cedar of lebanon ? A very important wood historically, which is kind of making a come back nowadays, and it is more cedar than the red cedar, which is technically a juniper... Anyway, I really enjoy this video, like your other videos. Thanks 🙏👍
@progressiveideasinwood6077
@progressiveideasinwood6077 6 месяцев назад
have not heard of that one! you are correct in juniper classification, just like western is in the arborvitie...(spelling?) family.thx for tuning in!

Nothing huge. Jewelry boxes, simple boxes, cutting boards etc. Mostly decorative projects in the house. Size would depend on shipping cost. A couple of feet to four or five feet long, 4 to 12 inch wide say, 4/4 to 10/4 thick,,, I can mill it to size. Thanks

What happened to white cedar, eastern?
@progressiveideasinwood6077
@progressiveideasinwood6077 6 месяцев назад
white cedar is similar, but but a little weaker in all categories. eastern is a bit tougher,smells better, cost a bit more &has better insect resistance & repellent. but white is still a fine choice for outdoor applications, or if you plan on painting. I would never paint eastern,...but white, sure would! thx for tuning in &sharing!

You specified Easter Red Cedar, i was hoping for a direct comparison to the more frequently found Western Red Cedar?? Is one better than the other for working. Rot & pest resistance?
@progressiveideasinwood6077
@progressiveideasinwood6077 6 месяцев назад
they both are good for outdoors. western tends to be the more commercial version (when u buy a kids outdoor playset) it will usually be western. it's lighter in color &the grain is straighter than eastern. eastern is superior with insect resistances. that's why it's the #1 choice in wardrobes,closet lining,ect.

I would be interested to know how western red cedar compares to eastern red cedar. Is it the same? Is it much different? Is it vastly different? I'm sure western red cedar is considered inferior but not being in the know, I would have liked to seen it included in this video.
@progressiveideasinwood6077
@progressiveideasinwood6077 6 месяцев назад
western is lighter& has straighter grain.they are both great outdoors.western being more commercial (when u by a kids playset as example) eastern is superior w/insect resistance as well as repelling certain insects.thats why it's #1 choice for 100's of years lining chests,closets,or building wardrobes...ect!

Any ideas for a source for olivewood? My local hardwood supplier just shook his head when I asked about getting some. I'm in Alaska. Hardwood/exotic suppliers up here are as scarce as that pink ivory you have.. Thanks
@progressiveideasinwood6077
@progressiveideasinwood6077 6 месяцев назад
Many places supply this wood. what are you looking for approximately? how big how much? know Alaska is expensive to ship to but some dealers offer free shipping over certain order amounts. This way i could suggest.
