Never really explained in detail. So here's my theory. The TARDIS has at its core the eye of harmony which is basically a worm or black hole. Now three dimensional space is stretched around black holes. Supposed the Time Lords use eye of harmonies to take three dimensional spaces and projected in a three dimensional object through the eye of the eye of harmony. In other words something like magic.
Of course, you could always have a separate interior that is placed somewhere safe and separate. The exterior is remotely piloted from the interior. The interior is not inside the exterior. They are only connected through a form of teleportation. Open the doors and step inside and boom, you get teleported to the interior which is located someplace else entirely. The exterior can then be moved elsewhere and once you step out it’s like the interior has moved as well. Only, it’s just the exterior. Making sense?
I wonder if you had a portal gun. And you fired one portal outside the TARDIS, and on inside... would the portals still function? And if they did function, would they still function correctly?
It’s actually a very simple process with only two steps. Step 1 - imagine fitting a very big space into a very small one Step 2 - do it It’s step 2 that people usually have trouble with
Here is what we need to complete the third step. We need a tesseract (and no I don’t mean the one from Marvel) the tesseract would be used to create a pocket dimension where then the interior (that has been placed far away) can then be placed into the smaller box exterior with out destroying it. Ps. I don’t know if that is how a tesseract works.
Most of the ship resides in a small artificial pocket of sub-space, a pocket-dimension, the "box" is the doorway and external sensors existing in real-space.
"Тем, кто хорошо знаком с пятым измерением, ничего не стоит раздвинуть помещение до желательных пределов. Скажу вам более, уважаемая госпожа, до черт знает каких пределов!" Булгаков
I’m sorry. Straight up criticising the fact you said “fairly unknown” I know many people around the world who watch it. It’s a British classic known by all countries
I believe that you wouldn’t quite put the tardis interior inside the box, I think you would start off with the circuit to make the transdimensional engineering, and give it some kind of anchoring device so that if you move the device that creates the transdimensional engineering it dosent move the entrance, but if you move the anchor it does, then put the device that makes the other dimension inside of it, next you disable the anchor, we don’t need it anymore, now you can build your larger space in the seperate dimension located in the small box, except you don’t start with a box, just a tear between dimensions and make the box around that, or make the box inside of it, the rift could be 3 dimensional, then all you have to do to move in space is put the device that made the alternate dimension in the equivalent spot in the dimension it made, that should move the rift relative to it, although that could just move the entrance and not the exit resulting in you being stuck in there until you move the device back where it was, this is where I’m getting confused, I’ll leave the rest of this idea for someone else to complete.
Used to do something similar coding in UNIX . I would make Object A then make Object B, drop object B into A, pick up A, teleport into B, drop A. A now exists in B and B exists in A. Infinite loop. I had traps and objects that would teleport trespassers into either A or B and the only way to get out was to teleport Home and lose progress.
Like others have said, the TARDIS interior is in a pocket universe. And when you step through the door it's like steping through a wormhole. Unlike in Stargate you can actually look through the wormhole from outside the TARDIS into the interior. Ever notice how when anyone steps into the TARDIS the entrance looks like the interior of a police box box? That's where the wormhole is, behind the insides of the box they walk through.
if that's how it works, how come the exterior police box being moved affects the motion of the interior, or how can the TARDIS dematerialise without you while you're inside (like in Blink) I much more like the idea that Time Lords just figured out a way to put a larger (maybe even infinite) space inside a small space, using some science we don't/can't understand (as is the 4th doctor's explanation, which is probably what this video was based on), for some reason I just like it better to imagine that the tardis doors aren't some magic doorway wormhole type thing, they're literally just regular doors
I think trying to bring science into it is just a waste of time honestly. Glad we're having fun here but like what's the point? Dr. Who is one of those "sci-fi" shows thats just fantasy, because any fantastical thing is just made up in lore to satisfy the logic. Which is fine but like its not really science fiction is it lmao
Actually it’s not a hard concept to understand. Take any spherical object, a piece of white printer paper, and a flashlight (or torch for non Americans). Hold the sphere a few inches/centimeters above the piece of paper. Shine the flashlight/torch directly down onto the sphere and piece of paper, you should see a circular shadow. That is a two dimensional “shadow” of a 3-D object. This idea (at least in my head) applies to the TARDIS. The TARDIS, or the part we see as the blue box, is a 3-D “shadow” of a 4 dimensional object.
I also have my own head cannon. So when the Tardis is put inside a human's body, she asks if all people are like this, so much bigger on the inside. And if you think about it we are. We have monuments and people and conversations and emotions existing all though our memories and imaginations. Out minds have the potential to be as big as a universe and are also forever expanding. What if time lords just turned that into a physical thing. The past is as easy to get to as it is to remember an event in your mind, but you are not in the past, you brought the past to you my remembering it. Same principle but with a box
Really you create a pocket dimension and tie the entrance to a realistic object. The chameleon circuit works by replicating an item then tying the portal to a real part of it in the case of a police box the door. Simple transcendental physics
"Well first, you need to think of a very big box fitting inside a very small box. Then, you have to make one. It's the second part people normally get stuck on" - Nardole
When I was a little, my dad always told me that he wanted an elephant. I said how on earth would I take an elephant with me, it too big. He says take it a par of binoculars flip them backwards and look through them. Now the elephant is small pick them up with tweezers and put them in your pocket.
Imagine you buy two bags for life from Tesco's - one big one for £1.50, one small one for 30p. You crumple the big one up and store it inside the small one but you staple the two openings of both bags together. Congrats, you've basically recreated how the TARDIS works.
Love it! Thanks for this fun little video about something very big to my heart! Tom's explanation for Leela was just... silly. It really was. And yet every nerd who heard it remembered it. I sure did.
The human explanation (and also the correct one) is that the inside of the TARDIS is a portable pocket universe, the entrance being the doors, that's how the Master's TARDIS can be a grandfather clock ~40 years ago and a police box now, the entrance changes size.
That also fits into the 4th Doctor's explanation, you push the inside far away (the pocket universe) and you put the box around it (around the pocket universe, of course).
Fun fact, the Tardis was supposed to change its form whenever it re-materialises so that it can blend perfectly with the surrounding area. However, its Chameleon circuit had malfunctioned when the Doctor visited London in the 1950s, and therefore it has remained in its current state ever since. Also, it can also be explained that the Police Box is actually a Non-Euclidian Dimension Container that houses the actual guts of the Tardis itself. Edit: I realised that I should have said “Non-Euclidian” and not “Euclidian” when referring to abnormal geometric physics.
The doorway is basically a "portal" to a separate pocket dimension If you wanna look at it in idiot terms In reality it's almosed impossible to understand tardises as they are 5th dimensional beings/objects, they need 5 dimensions to be able to fully travel through the 4th dimension
