as much as I agree with Idina it makes more sense that since Elphaba's high up in the sky, the song should go up with her, I can't deny starting lower and bringing it up on "Everyone deserves the chance to FLY!" creates a wonderful buildup and release, I love it! also was Liz ever actually considered as Elphaba or was she just brought in for the first sneak peak of the musical?
Imagine how satisfying it was for Sondheim to hear three laughs during the June-April part of "Barcelona." The first laugh starts at 15:20, the second at 15:38, and then a third laugh at 15:44 after the audience had a moment to replay the joke in their head. Amazing.
The only musical besides the original Cabaret that I've loved. One day Lionel Bart offered me a lift in his cab...what a beautiful humble energy he had...I was so overwhelmed to be sat next to him I was chatting away to him...suddenly he quietly indicated I needed to get out of the cab..he was going in a different direction... such a short but sweet moment in life..thank you Lionel Bart and Charles Dickens.
Arguably a cult classic? That's a couple very limiting qualifiers. I'd say it's arguably a classic (though even that is hedging a little too much I think).
Loved seeing Burt Bacharach sitting there in the audience. I've often reflected how both them composed rhythmically irregular and open-ended songs. Now we've lost both of them.
James Lapine is such an insufferable twat. Yes, he knows a lot about Sondheim and sets him up for good talking points, BUT he's constantly at pains to show off his erudition and his "career" ambitions as a fellow-lyricist. If he could divorce himself from his unconquerable egotism, his show would have been so much better (and certainly this episode.) Having said that, I'll happily watch/listen to any Sondheim interview no matter how much his interlocutor annoys me.
Awesome duet! Sarah Jessica Parker has such a beautiful voice. & Matthew Broderick did great singing w/ her. I hope these 2 r proud of themselves & each other.
