The only musical besides the original Cabaret that I've loved. One day Lionel Bart offered me a lift in his cab...what a beautiful humble energy he had...I was so overwhelmed to be sat next to him I was chatting away to him...suddenly he quietly indicated I needed to get out of the cab..he was going in a different direction... such a short but sweet moment in life..thank you Lionel Bart and Charles Dickens.
My late mother was his cleaner when he lived on Churchfield Road in Acton. I remember meeting him many times and i still have a signed birthday card from him to me. Growing up knowing who Lionel was, Oliver quickly became my favorite child hood film.
So cool! My dad now lives in that flat, hes his nephew, lionel died when i was a baby such a shame i didnt get to meet him properly. he passed 24 years ago yesterday x
A very special talented man who produced a magical musical that future generations will cherish and present. Poignant songs that will last long in the memory.
On the subject of the lyric "where" being dragged out over five notes: the reason is works so well is because those five notes on the word 'where' literally sound like searching. The music and lyric reinforce each other. 'Where' suggests looking, searching. It's perfect.
I did pop out the room and may have missed it....but if not...I thought Steve Marriot from the Small Faces and Humble Pie, who played the original Dodger in the west end would have had a mention.
So you don’t have to be a musician, know how to read or write a note of music, play any instrument....to come up with the most successful musical ever, that has more famous standards in it than any other musical. How did he do it? .......
41:08 - best laugh I've heard in years! Bless her xxx. I bumped into Lionel a few times at the Speakeasy (a rockers' private bar in Soho) in the mid/late 70s. I think he may have been a bit out of it in those days. But if I'd known then what I know now from this brilliant doc, I'd have collared him and said, "You and me have to create something together, mate!" PS - please remove the 10 minutes of random stuff at the end!!!
The music scene is crap these days because it is dominated by posh boys with connections. All of the talented songwriters and players were from the working classes.
