I respect that had the drive to start a company from nothing, especially one that grew to be so famous. Whether you’re a fan of his style or not, his genre of billet-laden street rods caused a wave that lasted seriously 20 years. It even caused an anti-billet movement that gave us rat rods. Sadly, the only thing positive said about Boyd surrounds his hot rod legacy, and not the narcissistic prick behind the legacy.
Selling Chinese Made Engine Parts, yes CHEAPER! AND I am certain the same Chinese engineers could build any Engine you would build, better and cheaper, all to fund future war. Idiot!!
The 1988 New Generation Chevrolet and GMC Sierra trucks were something that had never been seen before... The styling on those trucks was super futuristic... The best body style to ever grace a pickup truck...I agree on the '73-'87 Chevy trucks are more popular now then when they were new... Nobody wanted them back then... I didn't care for them then and I still don't care for them now... They were just a boxy box on wheels... GMT-400 trucks for 1988 changed the whole game in the truck world... Then Dodge tried to jump on the bandwagon in 1994 and Ford was so behind they didn't even try until 1997..
Just tossed together a 454 with “leftover” parts. It’s forged bottom end but the crank is a bit loose (0.0045” on the mains). Used SRP pistons from another engine who’s bores were getting loose, only new parts were rods. 10.3:1 with 990 heads on 91 octane. She’s gonna be fussy on the tune for sure to keep it alive. Fairly big cam for a street motor (262@0.050) so that will help cylinder pressures/detonation. Wish me luck!
Great info. When I was growing up my dad had an early 60's late 50's F-600 dump truck with a straight 6 in it and that thing would spark knock just about constantly. I didn't think spark knock was a big deal because of that engine because it just kept running. It did eventually crack the top of a piston. It had been bored 0.060 over and was sloppy again. We didn't have the money for a new engine so dad just put a new 0.060 piston in it and kept on using it. Eventually the cab rusted off of it and that's what killed it. Dad used it as a trailer behind a tractor to haul wood until the main hydraulic cylinder broke. I wouldn't recommend treating an engine like that but somehow that particular engine lived.
Would or does anyone know how to get into contact with Duane Mayer or Bernt Karlsson. I have a truck that was supposedly built by Mr. Karlsson and I just wanted to get some verification.
Lots of sound advice you don't hear often. I agree with your thoughts. It's funny how time & experience changed my thinking from what I thought I used to know. Guess everyone keeps growing & learning with every build. Thank you for sharing.
Hi can u give me ideas for a old golf volkswagon engin i race with in a 1660 class here in south africa please! 1600 bored max 60 tho allthou we only get 82.mm pistons here we use the 2litre piston 82.5 and run on webber side drafts on methonal with f16 mains and some odds but the camshaft is the secret some these guys getting power out of a camshaft or head i have no idea where they get! Racing guys and secrets! Could u advice please?
My pops was the first or second guy to manufacture a “Billet” Hemi head for Fuel&Alky cars in the early 80s. Art Whipple took saw mill saw dust screw compressor rotors and stuffed them in his own Mag case. Walt Austin threw Arts MASSIVE blower on my dads manifold and heads bolted to a KB block in his son Pats TA/FC and the rest is history. I remember watching Norm Drazy test his first single screw& wiper blower on this blower dyno trailer contraption powered by a SBC. It shot the the snout and quill shaft out the front like a gun! I almost got back handed for laughing😳. I would love to know why Eaton refused to Re-SFI certify Arts Blowers and handed success to Norm with his PSI.
What an awesome video. Not only are you the most renown knoladgable engine builder. You speak straight from the heart and are completely honest. So hard to find good people like you. You have my respect
“A half a point of compression makes a bigger difference going from 13:1 to 13.5: 1 verse 9:1 to 9.5:1” is just incorrect. You get diminishing returns as compression goes up. A lot of what he is describing is out of date information
Thank you so much!!!! The Vern Luce Coupe is my favorite Boyd Product!!!! It changed the face of hot rodding overnight. Even today it is still timeless!!!! Thank you Boyd Coddington for your contribution to the hot rod family!!!! Good design is timeless!!!! Great video and thanks for sharing!!!!
I bought a Professional Products intake manifold for my SBC. No matter what I did it leaked antifreeze into the engine. Tried resealing it three times with new Felpro gaskets. No luck. Bought an Edelbrock intake and bolted it on. Problem solved. The moment I saw Made in China on the Professional Products manifold I should have returned it. Expensive lesson.
Buddy if I had to buy ANYTHING made in China to build a motor I would face REALITY THAT I'M DOING SHIT I CAN'T AFFORD! China can slip under the sea for all I care. I think the people for the most part are good humans but their country is EVIL
