Hunters Connect, the official RU-vid Channel of the International Hunter Education Association in the United States, is here to help everyone that wants to increase their hunting knowledge and skills. We offer tips and tools for all up and coming hunters from purchasing your first license to tagging your first animal and everything else in between. Our video library will continue to grow each week, so if you need help with something that has not been covered yet be sure to let us know!
You put a "base layer" over the shirt you have on. So what layer would you consider the shirt you have on? What is that shirt made of? It is obviously not wool. Thanks
Would it be best to have short leg animals step between the jaws. Also too many calls them leghold traps . When they are foothold . BLM is guilty of that also . I normally use 1 1/2 coil .
Is barrel length personal choice, or does it affect hunting safety or performance? If the LOP for a small statue person is 12", is 24" barrel enough for waterfowling?
Because of his age, my husband hunts Idaho public land elk from a popup ground blind. He says the trick is getting far enough away from hunting pressure for the elk to settle down. He likes to set up around fresh water, good grazing, and thick well-hidden bedding areas. He use to hunt along public land/private land borders but the ATV hunters have caught on to that trick and drive the borders heavily. For his ground blind display of orange, my husband simply purchased a cheap mesh safety vest from Walmart and safety pins it to the top if his hide. He say's there's no way in h*ll he would hunt public land without taking steps for his safety.
Perfect setup for mountainous rifle elk hunting: Experience has taught me that I can set up my base camp approximately 1/2 mile from where my ground blind is setup. I have my ground blind set up approximately 200 yards (sighted distance for bullseye shot) from my intended coverage area. Thus, I can move into my ground blind from the opposite direction leaving my coverage area undisturbed. Ideally, I like to leave my popup ground blind set up, ... if it will be left alone!
Liked the safety tips about keeping the firearm on safe and finger outside the trigger guard. To often FAS instructors just regurgitate that safeties can fail but rarely talk about how they work the majority of the time. They definitely won't work if they aren't used! On the use of a tripod, it can be a practical hunting tool if it is practiced with. Also, in my opinion the shot shouldn't surprise you, it's called trigger control. The shooter should know when the trigger is about to break I think what you meant is to try not to anticipate and move the rifle when pressing the trigger. Good follow through will help with this. Thanks for the video.
Good information and good video work on field processing. Daunting task for folks who have not done it before. Appreciate the emphasis on utilizing organs such as heart and liver if folks are inclined to consume. Also appreciate the reference to CWD and the importance of testing and handling. Unfortunately I see a lot of folks who do not take it seriously. I think it would have been very beneficial to emphasize the removal of the bladder. More critical as far as meat spoilage than even the intestine in my opinion. Deer pellets are solid. Urine is not! Easy for someone not familiar with removing the bladder correctly to make a mistake and cut or tear bladder or urethra. Urine tainted meat is big no-no! Still, a very good introductory video to get folks started on field dressing. The tip to slow down and take your time is especially important for safety and doing a good job. The deer isn't going anywhere! Thanks for posting.
you forgot to mention the National Trappers Association in the creation of the BMPs...The NTA was instrumental in bringing al the biologists and scientists together to create the BMPs

One thing not mentioned here is to AVOID HUNTING PRESSURE when spot & stock hunting. On public land, you will most likely be after elk/deer who have herded up and are on the move, ... the same herd 100 other hunters, in your area, are after and have spotted.
I've always been told to set up my hunting blind several days or weeks in advance. However, public land hunting is prohibitive to setting up early. Bears, critters and people vandalize my hide when set up early. However, I've found great success simply erecting my pop-up hunting hide while hunting on public land.
I have a brand new Remington 870 field master I have only shot 7 target loads through it and I went to clean it and the patches keep on coming out a brown color and I let the break free clp set for about 25 minutes and I repeated this for 3 times and they are still coming out brown I used the bronze brush in between the patches and it doesent help but I looked inside the barrel with a bore light and it looks completely clean ?
For hunters who are handicapped by age and physical ability, ground blind hunting may be our only option for hunting turkey, deer and elk. Pop-up ground blinds may be the only answer because most public land does not allow permanent blinds to be erected. I prefer rifle hunting because I can set up my blind up to 300 yards away covering natural springs. Patience is the key to success. I like to hunt elk in early October before nighttime temperatures drop too low. Once I've set up my hide and brushed it in, I remain overnight so I don't spook game in the morning while making my way to my hide. I use my game cart to haul everything I need and my harvested game meat out.
I don't understand why you can't use a good field tip for small game? Most field tips are not super sharp or pointy, so they will still cause plenty of "shock" damage. Size comparison it would be like impaling a deer with a fence post. Doesn't matter what arrowhead you use if it's a bad shot, it's not going to quickly kill the squirrel or rabbit. A 22lr bullet has a smaller diameter than an arrow, it's also not going fast enough to expand or cause temporary stretch or anything. 22lr literally just pokes a tiny hole in animals... A field point at least pokes a bigger hole in animals. But 22lr is widely accepted for small game.... Which is why I switched to 17hmr, it explodes squirrel or rabbit with hollow points.
