my farm raised BC still terrorizing 2 cats 6 weeks later, has tons of energy, gets into trouble, and is wearing me out, but wouldn't trade her for the world
Border collies are probably the smartest dogs you'll ever encounter. They're loyal as can be. Just a little fair warning though. Their herding instinct is very powerful and doesn't limit itself to herding animals. Keep an eye on small children when they're around. We had to rescue a couple of grandchildren herded into yard corners by a BC. Didn't hurt them but the dogs often nip at the heels of their herdees.
I have a 5 month old border collie who's identical in shape/size to Cooper. Do you happen to know how much he weighed back when this was recorded and how much he weighs now? Trying to get an estimate for how big mine is gonna be. Right now he's almost 50lbs.
He is adorable! I have a boarder collie, terrier mix. She is about 32 pounds at 1 year old. I am training Kali for a service dog. She does great at training!. Can't wait to take her in the stores.
We were nervous about it too but they did so good! It’s all about giving them the space and time to set their boundaries with the puppy. It may take a couple slaps but they’ll get it 😂
Congratulations! That's how I felt when I bought my first full-bred BC home in '92. I had just lost my Gem, my 1/2 Aussie,1/2 BC that March and greatly misses her. I had passed out during my college sculpture class and another student took me to the infirmary there. I fell asleep and this beautiful black and white BC male woke me up from my rest. He-Scotty-belonged to one of the nurses there and I decided I wanted a full-bred female BC. My friend and I had gotten in contact with a farmer/vet who owned and trained Border Collies to herd both sheep and cattle. In short, I adopted a lovely little BC I named Tess Siobhan. She proved to be such-and-such asset to Mr and detected Diabetes in me. Later, one of her pups, Maxwell Smart, became a service dog to a girl with CP and Epilepsy.
You have hit the nail on the head with this video, well done. My 5 month old Border Collie is exactly the same as yours ( there than Rocco is tan and white) but temperament is the same. Like you I am having a great time with my wee boy, mostly enjoying having him in our family. (We have our moments :) )...
I just picked up my border collies yesterday and omg so shocked by how smart they are. Hes my first border collie. He’s 9 weeks old and already can sit, recall, understanding his name, walk on the lead and is outside during the day and manages to self sooth. Where I’ve already stuffed up is first night I let him sleep in my bed. I’ll try to remedy this 😂😂 Planning obedience course March 2022, followed by advance course and agility. I’m lucky I live near the beach and spend a fair bit of time there so he will also be having beach days along with his twice a day walks. Trying to wear him out as much as possible.
BCs do better if you don't use a lot of high pitched excitement.... because they are naturally high energy dogs. So, CALMNESS is paramount. ANY form of mental stimulation makes a big difference.
Thank you for sharing your experience! I love your videos! I’m living in Austin, and I’m about to bring my border collie puppy to home. I also have a cat :) Thank you for your kind advice!
Some dogs look old when they are 12 months old. Border Collies are always pups. Cutest dogs ever. Keep them busy or they will find something to do, not always for the better. We came home one night to find ours had chewed through a table leg. On another occasion, he had found a carving knife and was holding the blade between his paws so he could chew the handle. He is now fifteen and a half, still active, not bothered by fireworks, cars or much else but gets stressed if someone coughs or sneezes. They are all a bit nutty in their own way.
Love and enjoy him every passing day cause I just had to put mine down from health issues after 16 years on Halloween day and I am devastated ! Lucky was a rescued pup and he definitely rescued us. I had him cremated and I am building him a memorial for his ashes at home . Those puppy dogs eyes that stare at you all the time never go away even on their last breathe . I miss my baby boy!
He's so gorgeous I'm getting a 15 week old female border collie tomorrow from a rehoming centre. Unfortunately she didn't have best start was locked up in a garage. She was surrendered to rescue centre but hasn't being socialised and has no training at all so could be set back with training
How did you teach him fetch? Do you have any tips? My puppy is almost 7 months and ive been training him since 3 months to do fetch but he just only does it when he wants to....
You can still try puppy training in your neighborhood. Check for dog owners in your hood, ask if they know a good place to visit. Shouldn't cost that much. Enjoy 😀
