I was brought up in Winchester and went to Stanmore Junior School from 1954 to 1960. In 1956/7ish The Queen came to open the new Law Courts at the top of the High St. We had to have very shiny shoes and the whitest of socks! I saw her gloved hand waving at us. My heart was in my mouth! Unforgettable! I adore Winchester and wish I could move back. I've been in Australia since 1978. Pining for the 'fjords' regularly! Do visit this fascinating city! It is magical on so many levels.

I was born in this beautiful city and lived there for a time. This was my mother's hometown. I worked at Winchester college briefly when I was 19 and frequented The Old Vine pub. Living in Canada since 1960 has not prevented me from visiting England and my birthplace.
My mum followed this recipe to the letter from the website: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/recipes/churchills-fruit-cake (she didn't know this video existed until I searched for it afterwards) The cake was a disaster and a waste of ingredients, because at step number 5 it didn't say to drain the specified measurement of 2 cups of strong black tea. It was at that stage, when mixing the fruit and tea mixture that she thought it didn't seem right - the very wet mixture curdled. But having got to that stage she decided to bake it anyway: it didn't look ready after 2 hours, so she left it in for an extra half-hour... All of the fruit had settled on the bottom, and the middle of the cake was uncooked. All the recipe was missing was 2 words at the beginning of Step 5: "Drain and". Or just one word: "Add the [drained] mixed fruit" - actually looking at the website again, it says "Add the the mixed fruit" - a double "the". I hope too many other people didn't make the same mistake, as it's probably too late to get it fixed by now.
well, I liked this ad. I would go. I recognize a lot of those places from my youth traveling their one Christmas. I lived there as a child. I only wish I could afford to live there now!
Night life? No wonder you won a Purple award....for purple rinse. Cathedral, folk club, fine dining, drinking brandy in proper glasses.....this is as far from archetypal English nightlife than its possible to get. This is The quaint England unspoilt as yet by inner city degradation and depradation
I love my home county! Check out my Home County homage I've made to celebrate going home for University. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-755ui2PqbdA.html
