Many birds do not care for their feathers in cold water, but rather by taking a sand bath. This helps them against parasites in their feathers. So why not provide both? Your idea is wonderful and with a small sandy area next door it would be perfect. Thanks for the great idea.❤
That’s such a great idea and so cleaver, I love the sock idea as well . I have a tiny garden and this would be perfect to attach the birds 🦅. I’d loved watching that bird have a bath. Thank you. 👍
That is so cute! I wondered how a small solar fountian would work in it? I have a large cement bird bath. I put a piece of brick in it so the water wouldn't be to deep for smaller birds. The bees like it to, 😊❤
I think I went wrong with not re-fertilizing my herbs this summer...they all became pale-green. Does basil need as much water as mint? I have a feeling it likes less hot sun too. (Chicago gardener here--our summers can be brutally hot!)
You did a great job of instructing us. Some commentators blab, others don't explain well enough. You were perfect, with just enough visuals. I did something similar, but I didn't create a ramp, and I used round river rocks. It is probably too slippery for little creatures. Also, I never thought to add plants. Brilliant & Thanks
I would add mosquito dunks or bits to help control the population. Doesn't harm any other animals or birds. You could also add a battery operated aquarium air stone. You would need to place the battery piece in a waterproof container or ziplock bag.
It's amazing how enjoyable it is to see, and hear, the birds in the water ❤ I didn't see that you put in any of the other 2 underwater plants. Will this water really stay clean enough with just those 2 plants you put in?
Hi, thank you for your tips. I love narigold and petunia, but for me, who lives in Norh West England , marigold in slugs and snail magnets, petunia is aphid .
You have beautiful jungle garden. And the main thing is that our thinking is matching . I am having a very small garden of just 300 sq feet but I have all the wildlife . Thank you for showing your garden and sharing your thoughts.
I love this idea! I have two questions: I didn’t see you add the underwater plants…do you add those on top of the small stones? And, do you suggest placing the “pond pot” in the sun or shade? Thank you again! I’m so ready to create my own!
These look great! Do you have much trouble with the many peat free composts out now? I find some mixes kill my plants off in a matter of days. They’re worse (some of them) I swear than when they first started coming out!!! We could do with some advice on which mixes/brands are good for different plants🥴and also some warnings as to which types are useless!! 🤣😳😒
Can you do a series on South African wasps/hornets. We go to the Waterberg, with mineral hot baths. The place is infested and swimming is dangerous. The place is isolated and anaphylaxis is an issue. We are now cautious of going there.😢
Wasps, like bees, like a drink on a cool day, and mineral springs are often attractive to them. It can be extremely dangerous as wasps end up in the water and if they come into contact with a swimmer their first instinct is to sting, even if you're trying to save them. Unfortunately I doubt there is going to be a quick easy answer to this. If they are the South African Paper Wasps you may find fake nest CAN help to deter them, but they don't always keep every wasp away. I'm really sorry there isn't a quick fix to this one. 😔
Wonderful tips. I do have to confess I have intentionally purchased some more desperate plants out of pity (😂) or on sale and revived them. The actual danger is they may bring disease into your garden - so good to quarantine them.
Great tip about the quarantine! Nothing wrong with picking up a poorer quality plant at a cheaper price, one of my favourite roses in my garden at home was £1 on the "It's almost dead so we've reduced your price" shelf at the local garden centre 😂, but if you're paying full price you definitely want the best possible plant.
