How to make a pond in a pot, a mini pond to help birds, bees, hedgehogs, and other wildlife. Great trick to encourage wildlife if you have a small garden or balcony, and a great kids project as well. You probably already have everything you need to make this great pond on a pot. #wildlife #ponds #birds #gardening #gardenbirds #saveourplanet #balconygarden #smallspacegarden

This was awesome! I have 30 or more little water features, ponds, pots of water all around our property for the critters and I never feel like I have enough! I'm always looking for new ideas and I love yours. I never thought about using a sock so I'm definitely going to use your idea in my next wildlife water features. Thank you, Amy!

Thank you for sharing this!! I just got a new place and am obsessed with trying to help the wildlife in whatever ways I can. Was thinking the other day “would I be crazy if I just had a million little birdbaths, ponds and fountains scattered all around the garden??” Now I realize the answer is “no! Go for it!!!” Thanks for the inspiration 😂❤❤ Do you ever make videos about your water feature projects? That would be really neat

Many birds do not care for their feathers in cold water, but rather by taking a sand bath. This helps them against parasites in their feathers. So why not provide both? Your idea is wonderful and with a small sandy area next door it would be perfect. Thanks for the great idea.❤

You did a great job of instructing us. Some commentators blab, others don't explain well enough. You were perfect, with just enough visuals. I did something similar, but I didn't create a ramp, and I used round river rocks. It is probably too slippery for little creatures. Also, I never thought to add plants. Brilliant & Thanks

I use a kiddie pool as a raincatcher and the birds love it. I keep a plank resting on the edge so ground critters can get out if they fall in. In the US we have floating organic pods called Dunks that keep mosquito larvae from hatching in any standing water, which is also desirable. A small piece of Dunk would work in a mini pond.
@amykellygardening
@amykellygardening Месяц назад
I hadn't heard of dunks, but that is really interesting! I looked them up and they use a beneficial bacteria to keep I the mozzies at bay, ingenious! I don't seem to be able to get them here in Northern Ireland. I did get mosquito larvae but because the water is so shallow and the birds frequent it they seemed to get eaten within 3 days anyway!

Thank you for this wonderful idea with the plants. I'm in zone 9b, where in July it gets very hot. I've noticed the paper wasps were drinking out of a tall glass vase, outside my front door. Unfortuntately, they too can drown :( I replaced it with a large terracotta dish, that I placed stones in. I just have to refill it with water on very hot days. And the best part is, the terracotta dish keeps the water temp, at a cooler level !

@amykellygardening
@amykellygardening Месяц назад
if the water becomes cloudy, simply tip the pot to drain as much as you can and refill. Remove any leaves or debris that falls into the pond by. Being in a cooler climate, we have less trouble with mosquitoes than you might if you're living somewhere hot, but birds and amphibians eat mosquito larvae, so you shouldn't have too much trouble. If it's very hot and dry, you may need to top your pot up everyday here in Northern Ireland. The rain mostly does it for me! ☔🤣

@AnneAndersonFoxiepaws
@AnneAndersonFoxiepaws 14 дней назад
This is great, only yesterday I put a flattish plastic tub on the roof outside my window to give the birds water, they usually knock over ice cream tubs ( square ones) so I thought the flattish shape would be more stable the birds are going crazy using it to bath in and I had to change the water numerous times yesterday as there was a line waiting for the bath, the pigeons and crow couple and the magpies are all arguing over it now, it must feel so nice in this hot weather. Thanks for explaining how to keep the water clear, I have a tin of mint and will try this, there's a couple of areas in the garden proper where different birds visit so I will try to make a couple, they love water so much and always make a point of putting water out for the bigger animals like the cats and foxes but will bear in mind the steps and easy exit for little guys.

We have a lot off oaks and oak nuts comming down from August to February... witch was not handy for the tyni ponds. So I will trie again with your lovely clear film. On a spot half shadow and bit further from all the oaks. I did make hanging dishes under branches of trees. But bees , bumbles can drown. or young birds .. we let the leaves hang in a bit so they could get out. But oak is a kind of oak tannic acid and not good 😢. Also pine tree needles in bird feeders water is toxic😢... and killing. We learned the hard way .

Can I mention that if you’re going to keep it above ground, they can heat up quite a lot in very hot weather. Don’t place them where they’ll be in constant full sun all day and use light coloured containers, even white, as this helps to prevent too much heat absorption. Thanks so much for subscribing! You can use a pot or container or any size, especially if it's for bees! You'll need to top it up more often the smaller it is, but it's so exciting when you see a bee going for a drink. 🐝💖

This looks like such a great idea but I do have a question. How do you clean the water when it gets really yucky?

The plants help to keep it clear, and putting it in a shaded spot will help, too. If it does yet a bit mucky, because it's a small pot it's easy to tip out most of the water, scoop out any debris, and refill (rainwater is ideal but tap water is fine if you don't have rainwater).
