Welcome to my channel! Join me on my journey with this new 2024 Toyota GR86 Trueno Edition. This is my first new car purchase, and I wish to share with you in numerous ways what a drivers car has to offer. I've been a gear head for as long as I could remember. I've worked in the automotive industry primarily as an Engineering Test Driver for numerous companies and brands. I'm passionate to share my knowledge and experiences with you all. I'll be uploading 1 video a week!
You kinda have trouble gripping the steering wheel I mean your thumb is switching above and bellow the wheel all the time I mean its not really struggling quick suggestion of mine is to do a thumbs up while holding the wheel :D instead of grabbing it like a pole. It's my preference everyone elses is different but who knows you might like it.
@@Ducky-kg8lv Interesting observation 🤔 This was my 2nd time driving it, including the day I drove it at the dealership and brought it home. I was taking it all in still, between all the aspects of a new car, getting re-acquainted to GMR, I guess my focus was on many things. Now that I think about it, normally my hand placement changes by turn, depending on the degree of turn in. I don’t like my hands crossing over so move them. Sort of like drifting but without letting the wheel slide between my fingers in between transitions. On the track, your point is valid with the thumbs. Nobody should allow their thumbs to be in the way of a wheel incase is snaps on you 👍🏽
@shift__robinson Yep yep I respect your point and I get what you're saying. Looking to get myself a gr86 aswell by next year as my first fully owned car that aint my parent's cvt sedan 😆. Is there anything to look out for? Do you have any tips servicing the car, etc.?
@@Ducky-kg8lv That’s awesome to hear! I think you’d really enjoy the car. If I can ask, what are your plans for it? I’d say for anyone that will strictly daily it, nothing needed really. Spirited driving of any kind, at least upgrade your engine oil to a 30w, and overfill it about 1/2 a quart. If you plan to track it occasionally, then try anywhere between a 30 or 40w engine oil, and overfill 1/2 - 1 full quart. There are some other mods for track dedication but that rest serves most of the owners out there. Otherwise, enjoy it! When do you plan on getting one?
How tf did you get a Trueno at Longo. I’ve been looking around for months and I kept getting hit at $5k over (SoCal IE area). I found a Premium + Performance pack in Arizona that I’m going to pick up in a couple weeks, already sent my down payment.
@@johnrodriguez9720 I’ve been waiting since January 2022 for an GR86 🥲. I wanted a Premium in manual at the time and there weren’t any in the color nor price I wanted. So got on the list at Longo, later discovered the ‘23 Special Edition coming, so I switched to that. All of ‘23 passed and then heard this one was coming and I was the 1st to get it. Worth the wait! Congratulations on your find 👏🏽 which color did find?
@@shift__robinson holy hell lmao I wouldn’t have waited that long 😅 I’ve been waiting 2 months now and it’s almost here and I’m dying waiting lol. I got a 24 Premium manual in Pavement gray with the performance pack. I heard about the brakes overheating so I waited till a brembo package came in. I cannot wait to have this thing man! Hopefully I catch you on the road one day 🫡
@@johnrodriguez9720 It was long! It worked out anyway because I had time to save up for a down payment. Nice! You’ll enjoy those Brembo brakes. Night and day differences, plus the initial bite is very noticeable. The stock brakes overheat in track scenarios with repetitive abs stops, but usually pads and fluid upgrades take it away. Once you add big power then it becomes noticeably inefficient, even with track pads. That would cool to go drive! If you check out my IG, I’ve been hosting drives every 2-3 months. Hopefully I’ll see you one of these times! Keep me posted on your delivery too!
@shift__robinson I think greddy makes them for the gt86 I think they might be compatible, I'm currently not a gr86 owner waiting to sell my c63 507 and hopefully I still can find a trueno
@@DKarGarage I think I might have heard of that kit. I’m not really planning on power adders, just track mods. I want to compete in time attack 😎 A C63 is a sweet ride. Just curious, why the transition?
@shift__robinson it's expansive to track the c63, brakes cost me 5.5k every track day , the car is super heavy ,can't go wider tires bcaz it's not design for wider tires 225 up front 245 in the back, without widebody from a black series can't go wider oil change costs me 500bucks , not to mention all the lil gremlins it gets to fix paid 4k to fix my headlights etc... since I got it 4 Yeats ago I spent 15k on maintenance and tires alone I could have probably bought 3 gr86 allready lol
@@DKarGarage Oof, you’ve spent a lot on that German machine! 😅 There are cheaper ways to have fun for sure haha. I know they’re maintenance is high and they do have some C63 specific problems. I think you’ll appreciate low Toyota cost maintenance haha. How soon are you looking to transition?
@@shift__robinson we shall figure it out!! I'll do my logging in her sweet computer! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tn33FzrYTN8.htmlsi=ZVqONi32kC0Mz9c8 and i guess my guess would be 199. 😋
@@shift__robinson I shall do my logging in her sweet computer, and see what can be done... always an option to replace the computer as well for more flexibility.. and i guess my guess will be... 199. 😋
THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS BRODIE. I CAN’T BELIEVE THE READ OUT IS ONLY 209HP AND 175 FOOT POUNDS OF TORQUE. FEELS MUCH STRONGER THAN THAT WHEN DRIVING. CAR STILL LOOKING REAL CLEAN BROTHER. APPRECIATE THE CONTENT. NAMASTE 🙏🏽 FROM BROOKLYN.
Glad you enjoyed it! The torque increase and the widened range is really what makes it feel much quicker than the previous generation. Torque = acceleration, Horsepower = top speed 🙂
It’s a solid amount of horsepower and torque, but the power band is where it shows how it feels quicker in this generation. All dyno’s vary, some fluff the numbers a bit. This one is at the hub reading a little more accurate.
@@jonathanramirez878 if you’re even half a car guy you should know GR86s aren’t meant to be fast in straight lines. Moreover, you can mod a Honda to make it beat a Ferrari but it’s still just a Honda and it’s a modded Honda. That would make our conversation a different argument. Also, your Honda doesn’t have 4 piston Brembo Brakes in front and 2 in the back, doesn’t have Torsen limited slip differential and Sachs damper from the factory, not limited to 860 units produced and most likely isn’t worth 40k.
Thank you! Great choice by the way. Originally my color of choice was what you have. They made some cool colors for the GR’s. The Brembo’s are a night and day difference! You’ll appreciate them so much 😃
I got a mod suggestion... get yourself some strut towers, front and back. as well as other braces. each one adds to the handling! if your doing mountain passes on a regular, might as well stiffen her up. 😁
@@jesse584 Do you have a base or premium? I’ve never driven one but from what I’ve read, it’s a much more comfortable ride. I’m sure the bracing helps it quite a bit.
@@shift__robinson I have a custom ordered Hakone edition... I went for bracing first, as i may just supercharge it... either that or going for a high revver... 😋 every piece of bracing i have put in, has done more then i thought it would, as it is a pretty tough car to start.
@@jesse584 Many tend to underestimate the benefits of rigidity. The Hakone is a first gen right? Fun fact, the GR chassis is about 50% more rigid than the previous generation. That in itself is a substantial difference, similar to the mods you’ve done already.
DID YOU GET A CHANCE TO TURN OFF THE ACTIVE SOUND CONTROL (FAKE ENGINE) NOISE? SOUNDS LIKE YOU STILL HAVE YOURS ON. IF NOT I RECOMMEND IT. ITS REAL EASY TO DO, JUST EASILY UNCLIP THE PANEL ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, JUST ON THE RIGHT OF THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT. YOU’LL SEE A WHITE CLIP IN THERE, UN PLUG THAT AND THAT’S IT. MUCH BETTER WITH IT OFF, ESPECIALLY WITH THE GR PERFORMANCE EXHAUST. 💨🙌🏽
I eventually did get tired of it and found it on youtube haha. I also discovered how to silence that annoying seat belt chime that gets louder over time. Cool trick! I bet the GR exhaust sounds even better with the fake noise off!
@@shift__robinson ITS LOUD ENOUGH TO MAKE SOME ALARMS GO OFF IF I WANT IT TOO. 😂 YEA I FOUND THAT SEAT BELT TRICK TOO. I JUST TURNED MY ALARM ON. FOR SOME REASON THEY COME WITH THEM OFF FROM THE FACTORY.
Oh dang, are you in the city? I remember being out there for work and there’s no where to park 😅 I hope you find something soon! I think NY is one of the few places more expensive than CA 🥲
Love videos with lots of talking it’s easy just to sit and listen while I work I’ll tune into something similar also I like hearing about the gr86 cause I intend to buy one by my birthday
I appreciate the feedback! As much as I don’t like hearing my own voice, I will be doing more talking in settings that require explanations. So more to come! I think that would be the best birthday present to yourself and I feel that you will have fun driving it. If you are at intrigued by sports cars and spirited driving, you’re in for a treat 🤙🏽
Hows your paint holding up? I have a trueno in bRED and after spirited drives it gets caked in bugs and pollen. I left it on there for just a week and it etched into the paint. Anything similar with you?
Its hanging in there surprisingly. I already have some chips in the front bumper 🥲 I’m planning the ppf the car hopefully during the summer, especially before my first track day. I’m not a fan of the water based paints used now. I’d recommend at least protecting the front of the car (bumper, hood, mirror, fenders) of you can.
I just test drove this car 2 days ago. I was very disappointed. It felt cheap, and like a toy, but for young kids who have never had a decent car, it probably feels great, and the price is too high, gas mileage is terrible. I would not buy this car. I would spend a bit more and buy a 4 cylinder turbo charged Lexus RC. Much better quality and much faster.
Usually disappointment comes from expectations that are not met. What were you comparing this to? If you’re comparing it to the Lexus RC, that’s like comparing apples to bell peppers. The RC is a touring car, not a sports car. Lexus is a luxury brand, not a performance brand. There are many variations of drivers cars, and its okay that the 86 isn’t your cup of tea. It however definitely isn’t overpriced considering new sports cars in today’s market. With today’s safety regulations and technological advances, it’s really difficult for any manufacturer to keep prices at 30k or below starting msrp. Sports cars are toys, age isn’t a factor in how a car makes you feel, its the best bang for your buck in today’s new car market, and the target audience may not care about gas mileage however the mpg’s might be terrible compared to a hybrid. If you look back in history, what makes a car a great drivers car, is beyond all of those things you mentioned. Costs have to be cut somewhere, but what Toyota didn’t fall short on, was delivering a enjoyable, affordable, and practical drivers car that the masses could attain. Ask any driver from any decade, and they’ll tell you that it isn’t about how fast a car goes to be considered a drivers car, but the journey and the way it makes you feel along the way.
This was my favorite drive to watch so far. It was a clear sunny day so it was easy to see the road and it didn’t make me dizzy at all 😅 I definitely want you to take me on this drive again 😘
Indeed it is! I met up with a buddy in Hemet, so this is the western side heading into Idyllwild. We did go down to Banning and back down the southern most side of San Jacinto. It was a FULL day 😁
Glad to hear it! Same here man. I’m falling for this car more each time I drive it 😃 I now realize I’d like to have a GR exhaust like you! Its too quiet in low revs and idle lol
Originally I put a deposit down in January of 2022, but that was for a Premium in manual. I changed my order later that fall to the '23 Special Edition. All of 2023 passed until December, when the dealership contacted me about this Trueno Edition coming from Japan. Once I agreed to that, it arrived this passed April.
I wouldn’t blame you lol Honestly, they are essentially the same car. Very small differences in between the two but if you’re set on one, get the BRZ 😃
I'm hoping to get a GR86 around this time, next year. I hear that Longo is an MSRP dealer. Did you have to pay any markups? The owner of the Fujiwara Tofu Cafe down the road from Longo takes his AE86 to their events.
@@shift__robinson it’s pretty good. The drinks are soy milk based so it takes a little getting used to if you’re not used to it. The fried tofu is pretty delicious. Well, it looks like I’ll be going to Longo, then.
I absolutely love this POV, I watched it in full screen and it got me butterflies the whole time :D beautiful Trueno, wonderful video, thank you ;) 🤩🤩🦋
