I create figurative kinetic sculptures, or automata (plural). A single piece is called an automaton. I love showing how I make my pieces - I work on one piece at a time, and try to remember to take pictures along the way. A lot of time goes into the making of each and every part. I hope that this comes through in the videos. I also love putting these videos together, especially picking out the music, and arranging the clips to tell the story of each piece. Hope you enjoy. See more of my work at www.tomhaney.com Follow me on Facebook, Instagram, and check out my Blog, where I always go into more detail about each piece. See the links below...... And as always, thanks for looking! tom
Yes, a good place to start is with this book - cabaret.co.uk/product/cabaret-mechanical-movement-kindle/ There are other books there, but this is the best one to start out with.
What a great idea! I can appreciate the work that goes into this type of one off piece. The countless times parts must be removed, adjusted, refitted, removed, adjusted etc. to reach the point where it not only works but works in such a satisfying way. Lovely work.
Awesome! Questions: 1) where did you route the rods to the doll? Could bout see any showing up in the video. 2) how did you manage to make the arm move even with the torso turning? I guess you made all mechanism within the torso. If that is the case again the question number 1 above applies again. Thanks in advance for any hints. BR
1. the rods for his head and torso run inside his right leg - the head rod runs inside the tube that turns the torso. 2. the line that moves his arm runs trough a tube in his left leg. Since the torso doesn't move that much, it was not problem. Yes, everything is within the torso, which is hollow. I guess I should have show that. Marvelous! Do you remember if you experimented with the locations of the strings on the arms? Most marionettes I’ve worked with have the connection near the wrist, but I think the spot you picked gives him a livelier action!
Just got into automata recently and came across your work through Instagram. Quite stunning work. Among the most artistic pieces I've seen. You have a fantastic talent for sculpture that's matched by the movement you've created. Mesmerising
Amazing, believe me Tom, really! Please, let me say you are doubly good inside and outside your creations. I mean, I especially love also watching mechanical mechanisms you use... Extraordinary, really, with so many cams working 😮 Please, show us Mach more movements in the future, also these are pure art. Post a little more on YT, my impression is yuo have abandoned it, have you? 😂 Let us dream! Each time I see "wested & wounded" I am not able to keep tears. Thanks to exist Have a nice work.
Wow Stefano - Thank You so much for your kind words. No, I have not abandoned YT. I hope to keep posting here. And if you're on Instagram, I post there too - almost daily. Take care, tom
