Hi friend!! Welcome to Kittywitty Papercraft on RU-vid! I am so glad you are here!! I am a papercraft artist who makes retro vintage style junk journals and journal accessories. Vintage illustrations, ephemera, and collectibles from the 50s and 60s have my heart and are the inspiration for my work!
You can find my handmade goods in my Etsy shop, Kittywitty Papercraft (kittywittypapercraft.etsy.com). I also share my work and vintage finds on Instagram @kittywittypapercraft! In 2020, I will have online classes teaching how to make junk journals! To learn more, join my Facebook group (link below)!
I am currently using my channel primarily to show flip-through videos of finished journals and items that will be for sale in my Etsy shop. As I grow my RU-vid channel, I will offer junk journal and papercrafting tutorials. Please subscribe to my channel if you love retro vintage and want to learn more about junk journals! @@user-mq3vy6ov8e Hi! I had to Google it, but it looks like A Treasure Cove books are published in the UK and they are owned by Disney. Hope that helps! Thank you for watching! 🤗🩷✨️🩵
I have followed you for a couple years but hadn't gone back into your videos. I am getting ready to make a junk journal halloween album from this book and on a whim searched youtube and found yours! I am thrilled to have your album for inspiration.
I need a tribute to the North American Little Golden Book, the Mother Goose book that had Hey Diddle Diddle located on the front cover and the page that had Humpty Dumpty/Humpty Alexander Dumpty getting scared of falling off the wall by sitting on the wall in balances.
my first Little Golden Book was Three little Pigs. I was born in 72 so I would guess I was under 5 years old. But the miracle of it was that my family and I were driving on a long trip and we were out in the middle of nowhere in a forrested area. So I needed to pee and my dad pulled over to let me use the forrest. While I was finding a tree to go on, I found the three little pigs on the ground in the forrest. I was so amazed by this find and I kept that book forever. It was in pretty good condition though I could tell it was older than me. Wish I still had that book.
First, thank you for being so transparent and sharing this information with all of us!! This video series is SO helpful especially for us starting out. I never quite understood the pricing aspect and selling platforms. Even before Etsy raised their fees I’ve sold a couple of journals on that platform, priced by guessing and upon the sale being finalized (free shipping) I was sad to see what was actually deposited into my account. I ended up feeling like I simply paid to sell and it barely covered materials or not at all… well this was surely the case for my smaller journals. But as you said, taking the time to consider the cost is definitely eye opening!! Thank you so much! ❤
@@gingisjourney Hi! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!! Yes, there are many costs that have to be deducted for sales online that need to be covered by your pricing! If you want to make a profit, you have to be sure to cover all those costs in your prices! I have never been able to offer free shipping. It costs way to much to cover that. I think Etsy made a huge mistake by pressuring sellers to offer free shipping because according to them "it's what buyers these days expect and/or want." I think Etsy buyers know Etsy isn't Amazon and small businesses cannot absorb that cost, but once they became a publicly traded company, it became all about the bottom line and satisfying shareholders. Sorry to sound bitter! LOL. You can make a profit, you just need to price accordingly. Most junk journal buyers know these journals incur a lot of costs for the makers. I wish you all the best!! 🤗🩷✨️🩵
So, make heaps of journals and have stock of empty/naked ones from cardboard boxes and book covers. I don't tend to use mass-produced single-use materials such as stickers and transfers and make a lot of my own ephemera from old books I find for pennies or free. I do decorate some of my books and enjoy the process and looking at them when I'm done. I enjoy finding my materials and have a craft shop's worth of stuff in my stash. I think the kit route is the way for me...
6:32 So, about selling at a craft fair, I would sell kits to make the journal because you may have people that like to craft come through and buy the kit to make their own. If they don't sell, then you can still use the material to make one and sell. I would also have a few select premade journals for those that may want to purchase one already made and also for ideas for the kits. If you also set up in a shop and do the same thing, you could get a better chance of returning customers and even travelers. Plus you don't have to stay with your booth and you get more than just a couple of days to sell. 😊
I appreciate your honesty on this subject but If I may, I believe that my junk journals are more profitable then my jewelry making, All my jewelry is not mass produce. I create one of the kind pieces . You mentioned with jewelry that you take one picture and that is it, i have to disagree. I take many pictures , and the time that is placed into marketing them in addition to the displays to make my jewelry look appealing from all sides. as well as, to mentioned, with jewelry its a personal item and harder to sell depending on your audience. I also believe that a You tube channel takes effort to promote but i find it rewarding. Yes, it is hard work but is that not with anything? Again, i find your content very informative but i think it depends on the person creating and how much time spent. Can you live off of this? perhaps not but i believe if your ready to work hard, anything can happen. Your working hard for yourself not for someone else. Please don't take this the wrong way, just speaking from a different perspective. This is coming from a person that ,it does work for and loving everyday of it. Sometimes i have to Reorganize my time wisely, which I believe is the key. Again, thank you for opening this content up.
Thank you so much for sharing your valuable perspective!! That is so helpful! It's great to hear from someone working in the field! I appreciate you taking the time to watch and share your perspective! Happy crafting and best wishes for continued success! 🤗🩷💛🩵
I'm not sure what you mean by "pretty". Could you provide some more context or information so I can better understand and assist you?I'm not sure what you mean by "pretty". Could you provide some more context or information so I can better understand and assist you?
Hi! Thank you and thank you for watching! I did make a 3rd video in that series, but I stopped creating content for Kittywitty Papercraft shortly after that. I had to scale back my business to just being a hobby...for many of the reasons I shared in the series! I appreciate your comment! If you have any particular questions, please let me know and I will answer to the best of my knowledge! 🤗🩷💛🩵
Thanks so much for the history of the Little Golden Books. Usually I multi-task when listening to educational videos. This time I actually took the time to watch and listen. I guess what I am trying to say is that your video gripped my interest so much that I listened to your every word. Thank you.
Thanks so much for making this video. I just scored a large box full of Little Golden Books today at a library book sale. They only charged me a couple of dollars for the whole lot. Looking forward to sorting through them all tomorrow using what I’ve learnt from your video! 😀 There seem to be a lot of Disney ones so maybe not quite as old as yours.
Hi! That is old October Afternoon paper! They went out of business years ago, but I managed to save some. It's one of my favorites. So cute, isn't it? Thank you for watching! 🤗🩷🩷🩷
Love your christmas journals! Im glad you shared how you journal. I like quick writing so your ideas are great and i can still enjoy my homemade journal.
This is so true and am glad u can share. We've been self employed for 22 years and after expenses and tax, the hourly rate is low but you do this for love.
Kitty you did an excellent job. I’m listening to your explanation about selling your journals. Can you send me the link to that or I can find a PDF? Thank you so much.
@@KittywittyPapercraft can I get the link that you were speaking about on how to sell your journals? Your information is very informative but I didn’t see the PDF that you were speaking. Thank you so much.
One thing going into effect in US in 2024:If you transact more than $600 per year worth of income from selling or providing a service you must be a registered company and have a Tax ID. Second, you should be able to ship a junk journal through "Media Mail" (AKA Book Rate) as it falls under the category as "Bound Printed Material". and the package only contains the journal. It is about half the rate of First Class. You are 100% when you say you MUST keep your personal funds and your business money separate! If you dont, you are settlng yourself up for falure and end up in the hole. I used to sell Avon and had reps under me that I brought in and that is what I stressed to them. Those who failed, failed because they mingled those funds.
Thanks for your comment! The $600 rule has to do with receiving payments through third party applications like PayPal and Venmo (which is how most of us receive payment). If you are a sole proprietorship, you still do not have to register your business or get a Tax ID. Those are required for LLCs and other corporations, but sole props can opt not to do that. Regarding Media Mail, I looked into this quite a bit and technically, because junk journals are handcrafted goods and not books published and printed by a publisher, they do not fall under the category of media mail. Even though they contain book pages and are bound, they are not mass produced, printed and bound publications, so do not meet the criteria. The USPS has the right to refuse to deliver or to destroy packages that are shipped as the wrong class. I would hate to risk that! 🙈 I appreciate you watching and sharing!! Happy new year! 🤗🩷💛🩵
In the early 1960's my little brother became obsessed with the little childrens books that were shaped instead of squarish. If there was a big apple on the cover the book was shaped like the apple. A book with the face of a puppy on it was puppy face shaped. He was crazy about them.
@@KittywittyPapercraft I remember my favorite golden book was Little Black Sambo. Those wonderful clothes he had, the tigers, the tigers running around the tree until they turned to butter, and the stacks of pancakes in the end. Topped with tiger butter! It was a book I never forgot.
I had that baby doll crib when I was a child. My mom saved it in the attic when I out grew playing with dolls. When I had a daughter of my own, my mom surprised me as I did not know she still had it. She brought it over so my daughter could now have the doll crib to play with. My daughter, who is now grown, has a little girl of her own. She is now 13, however when she was younger she also played with her baby dolls and the crib. Someday, in the future, if she has a little girl, it will be passed to her daughter and she will also get to play with the crib.
Hi Debbie! I never did do a YT video about selling or marketing through Instagram, but I sure could have and should have! 😄 If you have any particular questions, I'd be happy to try to answer them or share my opinion! Thank you for watching my videos! 🤗💖💖💖
This is exactly the inspiration and ideas I needed to start my JJ! My girlfriend and I got together the other day to start our journals, tore out pages from our hardback books, made pockets with the book pages, etc., but I started losing momentum while she forged ahead. I'm a scrapbooker and very visual so needed to see it come to life as I worked. It was always going to be Christmas, but I couldn't figure what all I wanted to do with it even though I have tons of stuff ready to put in and of course, pictures. But your story about how you decided to make your book really rang a bell with me! It was exactly what I needed and your flip through gave me so many ideas for using stuff I had forgotten I even had (ephemera hoarder!) And I realized that I will be happier decorating as I go, instead of "getting the book ready" first. So anyway, thank you for the inspiration and Merry Christmas 2023!
Very cute idea. Another idea for added pages is pictures that need to be colored in at a later date. I also like the idea of adding pockets. I am going to try and make my first journal next month. Gives me time to gather some supplies.
Oh, thank you so very much for your kind words!! I truly appreciate it!!! I am actually getting back to crafting, slowly, as I've just opened a small booth in a local shop that sells handmade and vintage. I'm not sure if I will add YT videos back in because they take so much time to create! But you never know! I've been known to change my mind! 😄 I really do appreciate your compliment. It means the world to me. Thank you!! 🤗💕💕💕
