In the 80s I had a temp job assisting a guy in a book bindery for a few days and he worked at a guillotine. He showed me how they had recently added a "2 hands under the table to activate" mechanism to prevent people chopping off appendages. That thing was ferocious and deserves some serious respect.
Remember that woman who cut both her hands off and they cut out auto cut from the programmes . Anyone else hear that tale starting young in the industry?
@ossyrover1982. I remember that accident. It happened in a factory producing wallpaper somewhere in the North - West of England while the operative was cutting sample/swatch books on a 155cm/61 inch cutter. To prevent the clamp crushing the embossed/patterned designs they used a spacer block against the backgauge. In that way they could cut narrow strips without removing the false clamp. The operator in question was not formally trained and decided she could operate the cutter on fully automatic while seated on a stool (maybe?). She managed to lean forward and get under the line of the outermost photocell in the standard light barrier and pull the cut strips forward. All was going well until she decided to reach out under the knife to pull the spacer block and the last strip forward together to save time. The cutter - still on fully automatic, cut through the last pile. However, the clamp rested on the pile, but the knife carries on to the bottom of its stroke and cut her hands off. Fortunately the factory first aider filled a bucket with ice and put the severed hands inside. The operator and her hands were rushed to the local A.& E. hospital where the surgeons managed to re - attach the severed body parts. I did read later that the woman got a high percentage of used back in both hands. The factory inspectorate sent out a directive to the manufacturers agents in the U.K. to make a modification to light barriers on cutters pronto. Our Polar guillotine was fitted with two slim wedge shaped plates between the light barrier casing and the machine frame. This lowered the height of the first photocell so that you could not physically squeeze yourself under the light barrier without blocking the operation of the cut cycle. Sorry this is long winded, but this is how the story was told to me by a guillotine service technician while I was in the trade. Stay safe and well.
@@markmiwurdz2248 I’ve never heard the full story mate , all I ever got told it was a woman on auto cut , I’ve used senators on auto cut before you have to push the block with your fingers so your under the beams . So defo knew it was possible . Great story even if a little macabre. Cheers man
@ossyrover1982. Come to think of it, I believe it was a Schneider Senator cutter. Must’ve caused a lot of problems for Oscar Friedheim in getting service people out to check the Schneider machines in the field. But it’s like all equipment in the print trade (especially big powerful cutters) - you need to be formally trained, treat the kit with respect and don’t take unnecessary risks.
@@markmiwurdz2248 many are not these days I’m 42 so 26 years in people just chucked at stuff these days . I ended up digital printing last year miles easier life 🤣 chasing mullers and folders around mostly 🤣
As a Professional Origamist, from Pharmaceutical to SRA0 Maps, Speciality One Piece, Hot or Cold Glued mailers. Hi-Speed Reel to Plough Fold, 5 edge trim and Fold. Saddle Stitch, prefer Harris and Muller Kit. Perfect Book Binder, prefer Muller, 40 clamp, 3680 Auto log Feeders, Waterfall and In-Line Inserter, Polar 3KT, and Shrink wrap. Ink jet card attach. A fully qualified user of Madame Guillotine, Knife Changer and Trainer. Adjusting from full clamp pressure to pressure required for stock being cut. Lay and Grip! Backguage controlled through panel, no need to wind in/out. Prefer Polar or Wohlenberg with a floating bed, so that the waste drops into the chute, saves time! Used from, back in the day, a John perfecta, Polar, Wohlenberg, Heidelberg, Schneider 52 to 155. If you are changing blades every week, I take it you are using HSS blades through heavy board? I much prefer TCT Blades. 24hrs a day, 6 days a week, will last a month through Litho Stock. R2R, to cut, Duplex digital press, HP Sheet Fed Presses x 2 manufacturers. iGen, Xerox CCM Reel to Insert and Post Code Sort. I'm sure I have missed a few skills and kit off the list but c'est la vie....
in 2008 I worked at a envelope making shop that used really old mechanical envelope folding machines a mechanical dye press and paper guillotine from an old Canadian Tire in town. Zero safety measures on these machines and easily cut 200mm of paper on the guillotine. The guillotine was fast and intimidating. The envelope folding machines are a mechanical wonder to behold in action.
I used to do this cutting in our school’s old print shop. It was a large green press looking machine. It had a big hand wheel up front where you could move the paper stock back and forth on the cutting platform. Then there was a large five foot swing arm you would pull down. It would lower the four foot cutting knife down on the paper stock. There was another wheel to clamp down the work. I could easily slice through three phone books very cleanly. I did all the maintenance on the cutting machine and replaced the blades. I did tons of work cutting tickets and school paper stock at various sizes. That one machine did tons of work. I was it’s last operator. The school district discontinued Print shop. There was a lot of machinery in there that could do you in especially the big printing presses with the large rotating inertia metal wheel. I really miss my Guillotine!
@Ebony Man. "There was a lot of machinery in there that could do you in....." That's exactly why all of those old, dangerous machines were outlawed by new Health & Safety laws. New rules and regulations condemned the old bangers to the scrap heap sir.
Hello Fernando, what is your email address? We would love to share some more examples of what we have been able to achieve since this video! Please let me know.
Or a Polar, or a Baumann - Wohlenberg, or a Schneider, or a ........! There's only so many was to design and build a robust guillotine for the printing industry. So they all copy the market leader - Polar.

binksy69 We can only discuss on experience - this is our second Komori press and they have both been absolutely fantastic. The HUV press we are now running is streets ahead. Thank you for your interest.
Hi there, I run a graphic design company in London and we're on the lookout for a UK based quality printer so I might be in touch. I recognise the guy in the video, wasn't he on Come Dine with Me a while back? :D
