Involved in almost every print job, whether it's a book, magazine or some packaging, the Guillotine is our most dangerous piece of machinery.
Our new installation from Komori is our most powerful yet, and we thought we'd explain to you how it works!

In the 80s I had a temp job assisting a guy in a book bindery for a few days and he worked at a guillotine. He showed me how they had recently added a "2 hands under the table to activate" mechanism to prevent people chopping off appendages. That thing was ferocious and deserves some serious respect.

in 2008 I worked at a envelope making shop that used really old mechanical envelope folding machines a mechanical dye press and paper guillotine from an old Canadian Tire in town. Zero safety measures on these machines and easily cut 200mm of paper on the guillotine. The guillotine was fast and intimidating. The envelope folding machines are a mechanical wonder to behold in action.

I used to do this cutting in our school’s old print shop. It was a large green press looking machine. It had a big hand wheel up front where you could move the paper stock back and forth on the cutting platform. Then there was a large five foot swing arm you would pull down. It would lower the four foot cutting knife down on the paper stock. There was another wheel to clamp down the work. I could easily slice through three phone books very cleanly. I did all the maintenance on the cutting machine and replaced the blades. I did tons of work cutting tickets and school paper stock at various sizes. That one machine did tons of work. I was it’s last operator. The school district discontinued Print shop. There was a lot of machinery in there that could do you in especially the big printing presses with the large rotating inertia metal wheel. I really miss my Guillotine!

@Ebony Man. "There was a lot of machinery in there that could do you in....." That's exactly why all of those old, dangerous machines were outlawed by new Health & Safety laws. New rules and regulations condemned the old bangers to the scrap heap sir.

Remember that woman who cut both her hands off and they cut out auto cut from the programmes . Anyone else hear that tale starting young in the industry?

As a Professional Origamist, from Pharmaceutical to SRA0 Maps, Speciality One Piece, Hot or Cold Glued mailers. Hi-Speed Reel to Plough Fold, 5 edge trim and Fold. Saddle Stitch, prefer Harris and Muller Kit. Perfect Book Binder, prefer Muller, 40 clamp, 3680 Auto log Feeders, Waterfall and In-Line Inserter, Polar 3KT, and Shrink wrap. Ink jet card attach. A fully qualified user of Madame Guillotine, Knife Changer and Trainer. Adjusting from full clamp pressure to pressure required for stock being cut. Lay and Grip! Backguage controlled through panel, no need to wind in/out. Prefer Polar or Wohlenberg with a floating bed, so that the waste drops into the chute, saves time! Used from, back in the day, a John perfecta, Polar, Wohlenberg, Heidelberg, Schneider 52 to 155. If you are changing blades every week, I take it you are using HSS blades through heavy board? I much prefer TCT Blades. 24hrs a day, 6 days a week, will last a month through Litho Stock. R2R, to cut, Duplex digital press, HP Sheet Fed Presses x 2 manufacturers. iGen, Xerox CCM Reel to Insert and Post Code Sort. I'm sure I have missed a few skills and kit off the list but c'est la vie....

You can wear 6 pairs of kevlar gloves but it won't help at the time of trouble.

Or a Polar, or a Baumann - Wohlenberg, or a Schneider, or a ........! There's only so many was to design and build a robust guillotine for the printing industry. So they all copy the market leader - Polar.
