'Keep the classics alive!' 🏁
------
Hi I’m Joe & I’m on a mission to live out a childhood dream of owning classic Seadoos, Yamaha's & Kawasaki’s from the 80's to mid 2000's. My goal is to keep alive this now dying breed of 2 strokes, that I grew up watching. I’m primed with a bucket list of now retro jetskis from the 80’s, 90’s & early 2000’s, that I want to get my hands on.

As a kid my dad gave me lots of different jetski brochures and I vividly remember telling myself that ‘one day I will own one of these skis’...Fast forward 20 years & 2 strokes are now almost a thing of the past, with it being super hard to find clean examples.

Check out each series where you will find dedicated content capturing my adventures of tracking down, buying, restoring, riding & owning these classic jetskis.

WHY SUBSCRIBE?
Dedicated content capturing an up close, detailed look at these jetskis, content that’s not really being made anymore online.

Coming along for the ride ✌

We get two new seadoo’s every 3 years (when the warranty runs out) and we have done for the last 20 years now, we always send them as hard as we can when we run them in, sports mode at 5 hours then service them at 10 hours, never had a mechanical problem with any of them doing it this way, we always use 99ron fuel in the skis too 👍🏼
@classicjetskis
@classicjetskis День назад
I think 5 hours is too early to go into sports mode and ride hard (everything is still bedding in) Glad your serving at 10 hours though... I was on the fence for sure... but there are so many case studies for doing 10 vs 5... I bet your the sort of guy who takes a car out the dealership and rinses it cold 🤣😉 I see so many 6-10 hour machines like yours that have been bought with the mindset of 'I have a warranty, send it, I’m trading it back in around 3 years.' But what about the second owner who might pick it up at 50-60 hours? Your scenario doesn’t really account for what happens later in its lifespan as a machine. Not properly breaking in an engine can cause uneven wear and tear on critical components like piston rings, bearings, and cylinder walls. This can lead to poor compression, reduced power output, and more. Inadequate break-in may also result in improper sealing of gaskets and seals, causing leaks and potential overheating issues. Over time, this premature wear and damage can decrease the engine’s efficiency and shorten its lifespan. Virtually everyone I know does 10 hours on newer skis, as their build quality is poor compared to older models. I get why you're more laid back since you’re covered under warranty and change every 3 years, but I’m coming from the mindset of maintaining machines that are 30 years old, so I’m mechanically respectful of what needs to be done to maximize their lifespan! Thanks for watching.

Is wearing a helmet on a jet ski in the UK mandatory? Never seen anyone on a recreational jet ski wear one in the US
@Seadoo_bros
@Seadoo_bros День назад
No you dont have to wear a helmet in the UK, I have a spark and a rxp rs and never wear a helmet on either of them, I wouldn’t like to come off the ski wearing a helmet at high speeds the drag from the water will want to rip your head off!
@classicjetskis
@classicjetskis День назад
@johnluck2279 No, you don’t have to wear a helmet, but I wear one in scenarios like this. Even though it’s not always warranted at low speeds, I mount a lapel mic inside the nose area, which cuts out wind and gives better audio than shouting into a GoPro mounted on the front of the ski. That said, I personally wear a helmet 90% of the time when riding fast. There’s a lot of toxic mindset BS online if you choose to wear one. There’s also a lot of ‘bro science’ with jet skiers, and with the barrier to entry being much lower than in other motorsports, you get virtually everyone and anyone jumping on machines, which, in my opinion, is a recipe for disaster. Would you go motocross, go-karting, etc., without a helmet? No. But because it’s water, people think it’s safe. Personally, I ride hard and didn’t wear a helmet before, but after a couple of wave-jumping sessions where I came down and smashed my face on the handlebars, I thought about it. Likewise, when you go to the lake and race with your mates around a course, why wouldn’t you wear one? It’s just logical! All these guys out there riding RXPs at 70 mph thinking they’re invincible may think it’s cool, but seriously, what happens when they fall off and smash their head against the side of the ski? That’s more reason to wear one than worrying about the water itself. The brain is vital, so protect it-otherwise, let’s forget about life jackets, boots, gloves, etc. @Seadoo_bros The argument about your head getting ripped off is straight out of Fast and Furious... nonsense. Respectfully, I really appreciate you commenting and watching, but this is exactly why it’s getting harder to ride in the UK, because of stubborn riders who think they know better. At most lakes where I ride, they ask you to wear helmets since everyone is actively racing around against each other. The great thing is, though, it’s my channel, and I get to choose what I wear and what example I set! Thanks for watching guys.
@Seadoo_bros
@Seadoo_bros День назад
@@classicjetskis I’m not knocking you for wearing a helmet bud, we have only ever been to a lake a handful of times with the skis and that was a good few years ago so wouldn’t know about the rules on lakes but in the ocean we find it safer to not wear one as like you we ride hard and fast on unpredictable waters and find it a lot more comfortable and safer falling off without a helmet on, we have had first hand experience with one of the guys in our group coming off at 60+mph and it gave him severe whiplash with very nasty bruises around he’s neck but it depends on which way you fall of I suppose!
@classicjetskis
@classicjetskis День назад
@@Seadoo_bros I hear you, dude, that's fair. For me, with sea riding, it's mainly the concern of wave jumping and hitting my face. I personally always just feel invincible with a helmet on versus without. If I'm just messing around at low speeds, I'm not fussed about a helmet. It's a catch-22 though, as helmets also provide the best camera mount spot, and for my channel, I want the content. I do appreciate your insight; I just get concerned when I see guys rock up at the slipway, jump on, ride like a nutter with little control or skill and set a bad example. I want people/riders to see my channel and understand that, yes, I want to have fun and ride hard, but I don’t want to advocate riding RXP/RXT or anything else without a helmet when your intent is to push it. I get that the world of social media likes to make things look cool, and for sure, most of the time, I don't need the helmet, but in the times where I’ve hit my face, it's worth it. It's interesting that when I now hit my face while jumping, I continue uninterrupted versus without a helmet, where you're shook up. Thanks for watching, dude.

That's what I thought, man... Would you say to do 5 hours and then do the service? I feel like 10 hours may be too much, but equally, I've seen lots of stuff online about how, at 10 hours, the oil is trash and needs to be changed. However, it's only really at 10 hours that things have settled enough to be confident the oil won't be contaminated, versus doing it at 5 hours... So much info online. Personally, I just did 10, but I'm keen to hear everyone's thoughts for my next Spark X 🤣. Thanks for watching!

I hear you, man. I think if it wasn’t for the fact that, at the time when I was breaking in my Spark, I also had a GSX, XPDI, XP X4, SP, ‘91 XP, B2, and Raider to ride alongside the break-in, I would seriously consider doing just 5 hours and the oil change at 5. It took me longer than most to reach 10 hours as I ride all my machines. That’s half my issue, really-just when I start to get dialed in with the Spark, I ride a Raider or ‘95 XP, and then I have to switch it up again... I miss my '95 XP 720 Had a tragedy when the motor blew.... took it to a shop to have new motor or rebuilt motor put in it.... it was my friend's buddy's shop.. My friend told me "The motor is toast just forget about it" and I explained I knew that already - I still wanted a motor put in it - but he just kept telling me it's not worth it and forget about it... I then wanted the Sea-Doo back and he disappeared and avoided me for years.. About 18 years later I found out out the hull was sitting in the woods on someone's property so I just went and got it... it's now been sitting and rotting with no motor in my back yard for the last 2 years, so I'll have to buy another one.... maybe I will get an SPX

@classicjetskis
@classicjetskis 8 дней назад
Nice man, so we are only using the HERO 8, and to be honest, I'm fed up with them due to water spots... Not sure if the newer ones are better; let me know how yours does... Apparently, they have added a new hydrophobic coating to help with water repellency on the newer models... but the other issue is that GOPROs love to crash. I've only used the X3 once this week when I hired it just to get an idea if I liked it, and... we loved it. It seemed to have better battery life and gives you 4K (2K per side) 360 footage, which can be reframed if you get a water spot. It looks way more dynamic, so we have since bought the X4 like you, as that is true 4K on each side (8K total, but don't be fooled-it's not true 8K). We haven’t used it yet as we've been sorting out mounts, etc., as we had a few issues with the pole falling off and bending at speed. But overall, I think we will use X4s more moving forward. If you have any other questions, drop me a line on FB or Insta, as I can voice note you back faster. Thanks for watching!

I need to find an opportunity to get on a spark. Miss my old XP's and would love to see how they compare myself. Also want to do some buoy courses. I'd like my chances against that RXT on a tight course like you have available at that lake. Good video per usual.
@classicjetskis
@classicjetskis 8 дней назад
Definitely, mate, the Spark is a great ski (the Trixx) and for sure worth having a go to recapture some (not all) of the XP ethos... It's a lot of fun around a tight course, and a real test following an RXT/RXP. I only managed 1 or 2 passes; the Spark needs 5-7 mph more to consistently beat the RXT, as on the joker laps, the RXT gaps the Spark, and then you’re spending the next 3-4 laps closing the gap again. Thanks for watching, dude.
@SoonerIke19kilo
@SoonerIke19kilo 8 дней назад
@classicjetskis I've had a few chances at a spark, but the folks that I've come across haven't seemed trustworthy enough to reciprocate with mine. I think that tight course is the one way I could take a contemporary RXT in a race with the GTR. Opportunities will arise, I'm sure. The spark was what I initially intended on purchasing, but after all the research I did, the GTR fit the bill better for my needs. A spark or one of Yamaha's offerings may have to come next on the trailer for that OG vibe that the GTR does OK at emulating but doesn't quite reach.

Thanks, Jeff, really glad you enjoyed this video... It was a lot of work, but I think it's important to honor the legacy of this machine. I'm still riding and loving my 717 XP 1995 now, and it never gets old... I think I prefer it to my Spark overall. The GTX 2024 is the ST3 hull...(My dad has the RXTX 300 ST3), which is all about cutting through chop, so you won’t be flicking that around much. So yeah, picking up an X4 hull would be a fun ski to have for when you want to get loose. Thanks for watching, dude.

1000% dude, totally agree. The attention to detail 25 years ago is far superior to what we see now. That said, this is a common criticism of products in general nowadays. I do personally think a younger audience has shorter attention spans and isn’t as tuned into details like this... I think it's lost on them. Also, when the skis themselves are pretty boring color-wise, it doesn’t make sense for them to go crazy on the covers. If a new RXP goes past you with a black cover on, it doesn't make you go "man, I want one." Let's hope the manufacturers up their game in the future. Thanks for watching, dude.

I know, right? Still can't believe I found this. I see the blue ones all the time, but this design is harder to find. I agree regarding not towing with cover, straight out of the box, but what I would say is, once microfiber lined and ceramic coated, I always use a cover. The one time I didn't, I got a stone chip on the front of my XPDI... was so pissed. I would rather cut back the ceramic coating, clay bar, and reapply vs. paying for the colour match and gel coat repair again. Thanks for watching as always, dude.

@@classicjetskis appreciated Chris is it? It's more for the safety factor, for the cover coming off and landing on the windscreen of the car behind... Or to stop it partially coming off and being dragged and being worn through on the ground. I'm waiting on a computer so I can edit video, I have an old xlt 1200 you may want to feature on your channel. 😉👍 Thanks. Ross.

Super jealous rn, I’m using a new cover that fits the raider but dosent look no where near as clean as that, we need to bring back style and detail like that, great video

Thanks, man, really appreciate you watching and appreciating how cool and rare this is... Can you believe such a beautiful cover has been stuck in a box for nearly 30 years? 10000% agree-they need to bring back cool covers, but sadly it's all about mass-market, easy-to-pump-out covers nowadays. Thanks for watching, dude.

@classicjetskis
@classicjetskis 16 дней назад
Make up your mind, man-am I crazy for keeping the classics alive or should I ditch them for the new stuff? Can't win either way with you... Either way, I'm all in on keeping these old rides going in a respectful and accurate way to how they were in the 90s. That's what inspired people, and in 20 years, a complete machine will be worth more than the beat-up ones. I know you love the 2-strokes, but to me, it's an art piecing together all the details on these machines, and OEM covers, in my opinion, are vital. I admit I pay a lot for rare parts, but that's why I probably have one of the cleanest collections out there. Thanks for watching.

@classicjetskis im just teasin. Thats alot of money for a cover. I get nice fitted aftermarket covers for my skis for $100. But it seems like you haven't bought any new projects to restore and save in a long time. I think you need to save some money to go save another ski..restore another. Im sitting here with 6 project skis in my yard, another 5 in storage to do.

Is the ibr guard really necessary. It looks likes barely held on and would be easier without
@classicjetskis
@classicjetskis 13 дней назад
Not really, mate. You don't need to install the guard; I just did because I like things to be OEM, and if I resell, it would constitute as a full conversion. In the same way, you don't need to put the corner bumpers on. If you rewatch, I talk about how I opted not to drill the 2 new holes on the back of the ski to hold the guard in. I used the 2 on the underside near the top of the pump/bucket area and then used marine CT1 to bond the rear so I can remove it without being left with 2 new drilled holes if I choose to go back to the 3-up... In essence, though, you're completely right-no need to put the guard on. Thanks for watching, dude.

If Yamaha does a 60+mph jet blaster before Seadoo does with the spark suddenly they steal tons of Seadoo buyers.
@classicjetskis
@classicjetskis 13 дней назад
1000%, dude, you're bang on. Sea-Doo need to react for sure, as a lot of the Spark riders (including me) are fed up with 50-52 mph... we need 60 mph, and whoever nails this first will gain huge market share overnight for sure @yamaha. Thanks for watching, dude.

what ski you think is a good middle ground between the small playful ones and the big bulky fast ones? i really want a spark trix but im worried riding alone wont be fun for long , id like to be able to have two people on the ski and tow a third , which one of the bigger skis you think is most responsive and spinny lol
@classicjetskis
@classicjetskis 13 дней назад
Hey man, I totally get where you’re coming from. If you’re looking for a middle ground between the playful, small skis like the Spark Trixx and the bigger, bulkier ones, I'd suggest looking at the Sea-Doo GTI. The GTI strikes a good balance-it’s bigger and more stable than the Spark, so you’ll have no problem riding with a passenger and towing a third person. Plus, it’s still light and nimble enough to be playful on the water. The newer GTI models also have a good amount of power, so you’ll get some solid speed and responsiveness. You can still do spins and have fun with it, but it won’t feel as heavy or bulky as the larger touring models. The truth is, though, the GTI is the best compromise ski at the moment; it’s still too big. It does the job, but really Sea-Doo/Yamaha need to deliver a true performance, playful ski... Thanks for watching.

This is a very helpful video - I wish I saw it before I did a job on my 1984 Honda Nighthawk S. At the advice of the paintshop, I used a heatgun to remove an old worn OEM graphic (which was a bastard to remove). Because I held the heat for a few seconds too long, it completely warped and bent the plastic cover (sideguard). Like your skis, the parts on this bike are almost unattainable. I was lucky to have found a second hand plastic guard from Japan, but it was an important lesson learnt not to use excessive heat!!
@classicjetskis
@classicjetskis 8 дней назад
Man, that sucks! Yes, it does take time and patience, and a hair dryer is slower than a heat gun, but the tipping point where things start to melt is so small. I'm so glad you found the replacement part. Like my dad always says, "It's not how you get into the sh*t; it's how you get out of it." Glad the video helped and that you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching, dude!

The Trixx is great as far as a modern-day attempt at emulating the XP goes, and arguably, if it did 60 mph stock, it would be a closer true match. But there is just something about the iconic 2-stroke XP that reigns supreme for me. Thanks for watching, dude!
