Interesting story: I was attending an interview for a mid size IT company few years ago. After multiple rounds, when they asked for my salary expectation, I was asking for 50% hike based on the current salary I was getting that time. They paused for a second and they said they could not do it. I thought It was a reasonable amount based on the market conditions. So I was little bit surprised. Then the hiring manager himself said, for the role they wanted to hire me, the minimum pay comes with 80% hike. So they told me to start my negotiation between 80% and 120% hike. Because of that, they could not do the 50% hike which they themselves said it was very low for the role! Needless to say.. they gave me the best offer. I still have been working for them.
