I got the Master System for Christmas 1987. I asked for a Nintendo, but "Santa" brought me a Master System. I had no idea what it was, and over the years realized I was the only one in my neighborhood who had one. Despite that one kid in school who had one, but we didn't get along lol. Anyway, I gave it away to my girlfriend at the times little brother around 96-97. I say all this to say that I just got it back in the mail a couple days ago complete with the 6 games I had for it at the time. He had held on to it for nearly 30 years and graciously gave it back to me free of charge. Christmas morning all over again.
The Phantasy Star series is one of the most difficult I ever played. The plot and setting are quite unique to most any other RPG; it kept me interested, yet I never was able to complete them.
"the nintendo 64 game is bad", says you, I like it, it's a proper castlevania, with equal elements of being scary and full of adventure... the general problem with Sonya's game its that the stages are too big for the time you get, you will be scrambling to get all of those 1up just to die to the timer later and continue from half the stage.
I'll have to give this game a proper go one day- only got so far to get the Rare Replay acheivements. Btw, what's that music you used in your intro? Sounds familiar, but I can't put my finger on it, and it's killing me.
Micro machines was a very faithful port that was on par with the 16 bit market. Robocop v terminator. When Murphy spoke “thank you for your cooperation!” I nearly spat my tea out, no way the master system had THAT in the tank! It was amazing. Graphically it was impressive too. Street Figher on the MS was cool. There were so many games that made the MSX which shouldn’t have but was so good that they did.
Here's the thing about dissing Alex Kidd by saying he's "Sega's _attempt_ to copy Mario". Not just an accessible game in the most popular genre, using a cute cartoon character, as if N invented that. Did you know, that the concept of breaking blocks was _stolen_ by N from Boulderdash?! There is a fundamental difference in the design of these two characters, however. As Mario dazes in wonder into the middle distance, or somewhere just in front of his nose, Alex glares with determination and focus in the original design at least. His eyes have darkened lines beneath them to signify determination in a threatening situation. He is a martial artist.
Ever notice you get juat a slight bit more lift when you turn the ship one click from straight up? Helpful when on Mexomorf hauling heavy stuff before you get the boosters.
The original Phantasy Star game on the master system was something else....a long far reaching rpg which even had 3D dungeons, very impressive for an 8 bit game graphics wise and depth
This game reminds me of when I bought it alongside final fantasy tactics advance. I’d play disgaea for hours until it was bedtime then id hit the sack with my GBA and spend 2 hours or so playing FFTA. Good times.
A great video on my first Home console, which I got after having various Sinclair computers Here in the UK the NES wasn't as big at all as in the USA, and I believe Master System may have outsold it. Although we had our own unique computer systems going off at the time & a battle between the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, the BBC, and also the Vic-20 and the Commodore 64 But the Master System still made an impact, although its successor the Mega Drive was a huge success
I love the game idea of blended ocean theme with the space theme;the ocean is gigantic and mysterious as well as the space, and the musics brings this vibe to. The space ships in fish forms, traveling throught the space is strange and interestin at the same time, and the graphics, the pure of pixel art juice.
“What a mess of a game” I’m sorry what? Well I’m not gonna be like others that completely deny your opinion but its your opinion. To me, its still pretty fun.
The thing that's starting to attract me to the master system is the colors. It's still 8-bit but it's so much more colorful than NES and the 16-color palettes mean the graphics can look almost 16-bit when done well
I wish M2 would do more Aleste collections. Their game gear / Master system collection released a year or two ago is actually really well done. A collection with this, MUSHA and Space Megaforce/ Super Aleste would be fantastic...
This was indeed a hard game, but it was fair in its difficulty-- the mechanics of the gameplay are consistent, so once you get used to a new planet's gravity, you can get pretty good at it. The only part of the game I didn't like was the final level as the Golden Warpship. Felt out of place with its completely different controls and odd final boss.
As an Australian who grew up with this system as the main gaming console in the house until the Super Nintendo, I am amazed at what a good high-level overview you gave for this system considering you only really got into it in recent years. Dead set, WB3 is so good, I couldn't part with it when we sold everything else and I still have the original copy with manual to this day!
It's necessary to point out that G&G was made in 1990 and is not a "late release" for the Master System. In fact, it's not even halfway through the console's lifespan! Sega continued to support, and make games for, the Master System until 1995. Indeed, the majority of titles on the system were made after this game was released. Understanding this seems to be a real problem for American retro-gamers, who don't seem to be able to free themselves from their obsession with the US market. There's a great big non-American world out there and it contains a lot of very cool stuff America missed out on, not least the Master System. You guys were stuck with the NES, the rest of the world had a superior 8 bit experience, courtesy of Sega. Just
I saw the reveal trailer in 02’-03’ bought it outright. I have never beaten it though. Some games are just special you feel it and Disgaea most definitely fit that description
Shmupjunkie amd SNESDRUNK are tye two guys that got me into shmups. Ove been playing them for almost 2 years now and i can only 1cc RType, Darius, and Salamander. Bullet Hell shooters are my new thing, so im not very good at them yet, but they are beautiful and really fun
Your only valid critiques are the voice acting (which is easily remedied by switching to the superior subtitles/japanese voice acting) and the camera, but honestly there is very little platforming in this game. That dark room platforming section at the end should've definitely been removed though.
This one doesn’t get much love these days. I think the simple reason is it’s not as good as MUSHA however it’s still a pretty good shooter, best on the Sega CD for sure
I wanted to check out a review of this game from someone and you were great person to hear it from but my thoughts on the game yes it’s simple and a bit easy but overall I think it’s an enjoyable experience like you said “to play once” but from a 1-10 I give it an solid 7/1’2 and I’m playing it from the Nintendo switch console so that rewind feature comes in clutch to make a long story short “give it a try if you can if you like you like it if you don’t you don’t”
The length seems to be a pretty common problem with capcom shmups! Maybe that’s why people don’t talk that much about shmups made by capcom. I would love to see a top 10 list of capcom shmups. But there seems to be no such thing.
