A cycling channel, reviewing the products I have used and will buy, with an intent on showing you things that other big creators don't get into. Plus a few extra cycling related things. Stay up to date with my shenanigans on Instagram: @jasons_cyclingunboxed
Great video Jason. Heading there with my cycling mad 15 year old lad in 3 weeks so could do with a reasonable Sa Calobra route. Any chance you could share it? Cheers, Chris
Hey Chris, I love to hear it! It will be amazing to show him this place. Are you staying in port de pollenca? If not, happy to make the route for you from close to where you are staying. Jason
Do you have an email address or Instagram where I can send it to you. Feel free to add me on @jasons_cyclingunboxed Or email me on @thecyclingunboxed@gmail.com
May I ask where you have got this from? Whilst I can’t push the power for as long as Filippo ganna, at 192cm i certainly have those numbers for a short period of time with a peak of 1550 watts. Those are the last words I would use to describe bike?
I think these scales must be out. It’s too much of a difference. I have seen on someone else’s video of this exact bike that it comes in on the scales at 7.2. That being said, that is still 200g out
I just ordered a Nova Ride for my Canyon Grail. I'm a complete amateur, but I love this kind of jewelry on a bike. For me, a bike is a hobby, just like a car for others. And very good price not like Ceramicspeed . Cool video.
I have a sworks aethos with the 50cl rovals on, man..that bike rides well. Fast at high speeds for a weekend warrior. The aethos is known for there comfort, especially doing long distance
I’ve only just stumbled upon your channel (thanks to the algorithms when searching for videos about the Aeroad), really enjoy this format for your videos as I work through them - great stuff!
I’m glad you liked it. Unfortunately I don’t think I can do the list anymore as it will stop me working with brands in the future. In future videos I will be trying to use my language to interpret the difference between bikes so will be something to listen out for
@@cyclingunboxedFair enough, I can see why… I’ve just watched that new Aethos video and thought you put your feelings across perfectly well without specifying scoring, all good!
Excellent review - I would be curious about a perspective from an aging cyclist where aero may not be as important and comfort and compliance more so - but they still want to go fast (which is why I am looking at this bike)
Really loved this bike but still hold my opinion. I still believe that you can just get a wider wheel and tyre set on a more aero bike for the comfort to get close to this. A lot of people have said just buy some aero wheels and cockpit, but then you are looking at £2500+ on top of what you have already bought. I too would like to have an opinion from someone of your description just to know.
Why I would buy is because of the 27.2 seat post, thread BB, stranded bar and stem. And talking about stem if your going to say aero is better don’t run 30mm of spaces under the stem😂😊
Aero frames are so overated. I’ll take exposed cables and traditional stem over aero any time. Aero is marketing speak. Your position is more important. If you are truly concerned with aero you are probably a pro and your choice of bike will be dictated to you.
Hey mate, very cool video! You answered most of the questions I had, it's much better to see just a regular guy doing the reviews rather than the big channels where you don't know if they're getting paid to say nice things about it etc. As someone who's relatively new to cycling and never ridden a carbon bike, I was wondering what the difference is between your ratings in the end spreadsheed? For example the Basso got a score of 2 for handling, does that mean it actually handles badly or it's just 'less good' compared to the other bikes? The reason I'm asking is that I'm considering making the upgrade to a fancy carbon bike, I've been riding an aluminium trek domane al 3 for the past few years, and I just assumed that all these expensive carbon bikes would be better in pretty much every way. I'm torn between the canyon aeroad and the sl8, but leaning towards the sl8 because of this review and the spreadsheet at the end. For someone like me I don't think getting the £12k s-works version would be sensible, I figured the 6k 'expert' model would be more suitable, do you think there is much difference between them or it's just a case of the s-works being slightly lighter? Thank again for the video!
Hey! For the Basso, it was a personal thing. When cornering it was as if you had to work really hard to get the bike to turn, but then it was almost a knife edge. If you pushed it too hard, the bike would turn too sharply. Anyone would be just fine on the bike. But that’s how I would describe the sensation of the Basso. I would say it’s dangerous by any means, just not user friendly. I have some older videos on this but if buying a Specialized, I can only recommend the top models. At the price range you are looking at, I would 100% go for the canyon. The handle bars, the wheels, the tyres, the group set will all be far better on the canyon at this price range. It won’t need any further upgrades to make it a top performing bike like the specialized would. I don’t mind saying I prefer the sl8 in comfort and the way it handles but the aeroad is no slouch and after 2 weeks you will have the handling dialled on it. + you can just put some wider tyres on the aeroad to make it more comfortable. As for the s works version, it’s quite literally just the weight of the frame. They all feel and perform the same from the normal to the s works. I hope that helps a bit. Let me know what you go for!
I had mine for 2 weeks in my commuter bike. Was sitting on a bench. Suddenly poof the air was gone. The tube had a fissure at the upper side facing the rim tape near the overlapping segment. No puncture. I tried to patch it, but a blister appeared a few centimeters farther that burst at 30psi. Another tube I had installed in a kids mountain bike held air only for 2 days, afterwards it was flat.
put on the Roval Rapide Cockpit and slam without spacers, mid depth aero wheels like Zipp 303 Firecrest and it's fast everywhere... climbing, descending, flats...and comfortable all day rides
I do agree with this. Someone else said this bike should be 3/4 the price of the sl8 and I agree because then you would have the budget for these upgrades.
I purchased a Roval Rapide cockpit for my 2020 Venge on Ali it is amazing. About 1 year ago now. The seller also had the custom spacer for the venge which is typically hard to find, so I knew he was knowledgeable. I did not like the mount that came with it so I went with a 3D print and it's amazing, head unit sits totally flush! Great purchase!
This video was filmed on the Isle of Wight. I believe so for the aero. Cables out front, round bars and shallow wheels. I don’t mind these things but needs to be cheaper than the sl8 to justify the bike I think
Awesome vid!! Some great vid angles 😉. Agree with the cool factor comment…. Kinda meh….external cables on a 10-12k bike in 2024 just doesn’t seem right.
Are they going to cut the aethos, or keep it around for the older riders. Because the sl8 is so similar they only need one bike to rule them all right?
I had both and it is slightly more comfortable than sl8 but feel of the sl8 is faster and for me the feel was actually more important. Strava numbers probably are the same. It is great great bike but should be 3/4 of the price of sl8.
This is very true! I think it would look really nice on this bike as well. I quite like to ride the bikes as they come because I feel as if that’s how most people would keep them. If I owned it though, I would probably go for a deeper wheel as well.
No need for the tape - the carbon rim is much harder than the plastic used for the Tyre Glider and won't be damaged. The tape will just add resistance and make it harder to install the tire.
I don’t race and rarely benefit from the aerodynamics (that a better body position will do more for) with my average 30kph going. I did a frame build of one of these and I absolutely love it. Dances up the hills and more than capable on the flats. Easily packed, easily maintained with BSA treaded BB and ubiquitous standard parts available at every price point from everywhere. Nothing proprietary. It’s classic lines are just gorgeous. This is not a racers bike, it’s a thinking man’s bike.
