At 2.00 on the timeline wearing ceremonial chain is Councillor A.E. Fletcher-Williams known universally as Nancy. At 2.35 looking like the manager of a chain of Indian restaurants is Councillor Frank Selby who co-authored a Rhyl history book with Bill Ellis. At 3.54 the gent with big glasses is a World War 2 Eighth Army veteran. So many familiar faces here. Seen ‘em all, or nearly all, out shopping! -- Colin Jones, creator of this RU-vid channel ‘RhylTime’, is also the author of a blog titled ‘Rhyl Life’: rhyl-life.blogspot.co.uk
Where has this once lovely town gone to, where have all the nice people gone to, and more oddly, where has all those lovely hot summers we used to have gone?. I remember even in the early 90s the warm and hot summer days used to last almost from May right til the end of Sept. Now, even in April and May you'd be lucky to see one day that dosent require one to wear a coat and hat to go out. Springs and Summers these days are mostly cold, with the occasional warm to hot day, but that's about it.

I grew up in Rhyl from about 1952 til 1959 when we emigrated to Australia. I was at St Mary's school (Catholic). I was born in 1948, so I could well have known some these children.
***** Thank you for the comment, Christine. If you kept any old photos that show Rhyl in the background, they would be welcome on rhyl-life.blogspot.co.uk/

At 2:20 a picture of a rail accident in Rhyl, this happened in 1979 not 1982. My Grandfather is in the photo of Rhyl Engine Shed firemen and drivers at 1:20.
aigen56 Thank you for your interest. The picture of a rail accident and the date appear in 'The Spirit Of Rhyl' by Bill Ellis, page 144. I have seen no documents that suggest that the date may be wrong.

Oh my goodness such happy memories. I spent so much of my childhood at the funfair, trampolines, rollerskating rink and the Sun Centre. It was lovely to see the picture of the dolphins, I went to see the show as a child. The dolphins used to toss a red ball into the audience and if you caught it you got to keep it. Also loved the outdoor swimming pool and the donkeys. It makes me sad to see the way Rhyl has been destroyed. Great pics, thanks x
Lovely to find this photo show of st marys convent school showing " the ferrymans daughter" and me as the strong man...lovely to see Sister Agnus and Sister Christine alicia randall marietta such wonderful memoriessome 50 years ago.. this is Maralyn so whoever posted this many thanks lovely great days xxx
Word has arrived that No.11 is the only privately-owned house in Crescent Road. The rest are all in the hands of landlords, notably Pennaf/Clwyd Alyn Housing Association.
I used to come to Rhyl with my Mum and Dad during the wakes week holidays in the 1940s and 50s. I came across your brilliant presentation whilst looking for info on who the Punch and Judy man was at that time, and did he really have a real dog which sat on the play board during the performances (as I remembered it)? I also used to visit the Amphitheatre to watch the shows and remember well the resident group of Pierrot clowns. I also have autographs of the Morton Fraser Harmonica Gang which I think I collected there. Lots of memories stimulated by your wonderful you tube video. Thanks.
Very nostalgic - I grew up in the area in the 60's and my first paid job was in Boots the chemist - £4.17 shillings and sixpence a week for a six day week! My bus fare back to the Ffrith was 2/6d a day. Going to the fair for a night out was a real treat! thanks for posting.
one thing to say about rhyl in the 60s.....FABULOUS.......so sad to see it today without its floral hall and great atmosphere. . great video clip, bought backs some fantastic memories.
I knew Rita Hughes very well, we were very good friends. My name was Anna Carroll we started as boarders on the same day and were homesick together, my name is now Anna Legget.
A similar situation to Detroit. The underlying economy has been stripped out, probably never to return. Labour, like the Democrats, have just failed to deal with that fact adequately. I went there as a kid back in the 60s/ 70s but why would I return with my own children? I now live in Australia, but if I were to visit again, I'd go to Llandudno. Shame though, because the beach is quite nice. Best hope for Rhyl is for the place to become a more upmarket, residential place. No turning back, sadly.
The decline was already beginning during the era of this movie. As a kid in the 70s I remember my (working class) parents describing Rhyl and Blackpool as "cheap and tacky" We still visited these towns for the day, but we took our long holidays elsewhere...still in the UK. My grandparent's generation were the last devotees to Blackpool and Rhyl. it's no surprise to see the culmination of these changes in the shape of the modern UK seaside town. Facilitating poverty overspill has ensured the end
Wow its so amazing to see wat rhyl was like . I really whish it could be like that now. It looked brighter then than wat is dose now. Like the fair has gone so have the donkeys. all the old buildings that thy are knocking down and just leave them for years boarded up were buildings were. To be honest rhyl is looking a right mess now.
Welcome to Wales, John. I hope you develop an interest in the place and in its history and culture. The Labour Party has a stronger presence in Wales and therefore must carry more responsibility for the state of affairs here. The Welsh Government is run by Labour. Rhyl has been part of an unemployment high spot for a long time. Jobcentre Plus might be able to suggest towns where employment prospects are brighter. Good luck to you. Best wishes, RhylTime /Colin Jones.
