I'm going to try my second attempt (and second piece of cloth) using this method. The old RCA radio I'm working on has the cloth mounted on standard corrugated cardboard which has a slight curl to it.

This is a rare find of a video. Typically, I have seen the restoration videos on the rounded Hehr windows, but this is the first one I have come across that has shown how to restore the older squared off windows. Thanks!

What a cool little gizmo! Even such a simple utilitarian item such as that was designed with care, with those rounded-off fins giving just the slightest hint of art-deco. Built to last and looked good doing it.

Have you tried putting citric acid inside the fount? I don't know where I went wrong with my 335 lantern but I found out the hard way there was a type of rust protector on the inside. I didn't have a tool to remove the check valve so I worked at it for a 1-1/2 days of spraying carb cleaner into the valve to clean it up. After I got the valve working I put a citric acid solution on the inside of the fount to clean up any varnish because I was rather certain the previous owner left it full of pump gas until it evaporated dry. When I was rinsing out the tank all this paint came off the inside of the tank. Internet said using both carb cleaner and citric acid was okay. I hope it doesn't rust away too quickly now.

In 1972 my family moved to a 545 acre farm in Missouri. A month later my dad drug my uncle's 54 Olds from the shop where it had been setting for several years after the transmission went out to the farm. He put it out in the lot in front of the barn. I was 5, my 2 sisters were 8 and 10. My dad said, "Here you go, have fun!" We played in that car for hours and hours. I usually got to "Drive" and we went all over the world. Africa, Europe, China and even the moon!!! We put a few million miles on that old car even though it never moved. We named her Ol' Blue and my oldest sister even painted the name on her hood with some old tin paint we found in the barn. In 1974 my cousin came for a 2 month visit. He was 15 and a total car nut. He fell in love with the car and my dad agreed if he could get her running he would sell the car to him. My cousin dragged me to every local junkyard where we collected parts. A new pair of tail lights (the horses had broken the original ones), a piece of side trim, a couple of door handles. My cousin was trying to earn enough money to get another transmission but they were like $15 at the salvage yard and that was a lot of money in the summer of '74. He left and never came back for Ol' Blue. The next year my parents split up and my mom moved to a town 45 miles away and us kids went with her. My dad sold the farm and worse off he sold Ol' Blue to the local salvage yard. Life went on but I always wanted a '54 Olds. Well, three weeks ago I bought 2. They were in a salvage yard full of old cars and they were headed for the crusher if no one bought them. They sat in that yard for 60+ years side by side. Unfortunately one is in really bad shape so it will give it's life to save the other. I got them both home last weekend and the better of the two is now setting in my shop where the restoration has already begun!!!

I love the story! I was always partial to Buicks, but Oldsmobile holds a special space in my heart, because the first dealership I ever worked for was a Oldsmobile dealer. I fell in love with this car, and have had some wonderful adventures in it. Looking forward to getting it on the road again when I get our old house squared away! Good luck with your restoration! You'll love it when you're done!

Ive done about 50 restos. That rust disolver you have i used on a Joseph Allen Silver Steel and a Hamburg Ring razor to get some mild rust pits out of the finish and made the mistake of letting it sit more than 24hrs instead of one or two and had a blow out in the grind but not the edge on the silver steel and swirl marks embedded on the spine on the hamburg ring razor that was almost impossible to polish out. Those of you watching dont allow it to sit more than an hour or two. I like the rivet pinning. I need to try that next. I have a nice Wade and Butcher that needs re re riviting and pinning as i cracked the scales in the same spot as shown in this video.

Great job and thanks for the information how to disengaged. Never the less my lamp is 242B and it looks that the tank is made from brass. Not the shiny metal you have. It was painted green but in a bad shape. So I wonder how to fixe it.

I realize you're using Everclear because of the high alcohol content here, but when I clean my regularly smoked pipes, I always use high proof whiskey (the cheap stuff, not gonna use my good stuff for that!). It imparts a nice, smooth flavor for the next couple of smokes. Great restoration. The old ones you find out and about just need some tlc and they're ready to smoke again!

And what are you driving to the site? Never mind, but it's telling. The sound the Olds makes upon opening the doors should be 4K recorded and sent to Industrial Light and Magic before being lubricated. They would pay for the creepy sound effect. Cool to see what needs to be done to resuscitate the old girl. Great! Starts finally and sounds pretty good.
