Hey there! My name is Megan! And Welcome to Mustard Seed Homesteading!
I’m so glad you’re here. I look forward to taking this journey with you all as a suburban homesteader. And my hope is to encourage and inspire you to learn and grow all things homesteading!
@@blessingsfromthegarden I know what you mean… I would love to grow an abundance of rose gold potatoes. Those are some of my favorite. How do you plant your potatoes? In bags or the ground?
Great video, I am new subscriber but enjoying your video. What zone are you in and did the spray help on the white flies? I am dealing with those right now😢
@@saminairfan45 Hi! And Welcome!! I’m glad you are, thank you! I am zone 8B in Central Alabama. The neem oil spray helped a little bit when I first sprayed it, but I think it’s something that needs to be sprayed continually maybe every couple days or once a week. Just make sure that you dilute the neem oil and follow the instructions on the bottle because I accidentally put too much neem oil in the water when making the spray and it burnt some of my leaves. And I know what you mean 😢 I’ve been dealing with white flies all summer on almost everything. They are so bad this year. But you just do what you can. And now you have the fall garden to look forward to, which has a lot less pest pressure.😃🌻
I love having this plant! I purchased the starts from Azure Standard last year. I do have the companies information in my description. I’ve also heard that you can make fertilizer out of it!
Don't take the suckers off. My Idea is to use the tomato horn worm. They trim tomato plants, turn into moths that pollinate and leaves more fruit. Especially on a well fertilized plant.
I’m in SC I have harvested our tomatoes already. I’m on my second round of planting tomatoes. And other gardening plants. Your garden is beautiful so dark healthy plants. It has been so hot here this summer.
Hi! And Welcome!! Thank you so much!! ☺️ And very nice, I hope you get a huge harvest!! Now that I’ve already posted my garden tour. It seems like my tomatoes are starting to turn red and what I’ve been doing is once I start to see red or a blush of pink. I take them off so that it can give energy to the other tomatoes. I’m hoping for a huge harvest this year. And that’s great that you’re already starting your second planting. I can’t believe I’m already having to plan the fall garden… time flys! And I know what you mean it’s been extremely hot here in Alabama too! As much as I love the summer garden I’m looking forward to cooler weather! 😃🌻
You can use the lemon grass leaves for tea - dehydrate or freeze dry. The stalks can be used in Thai soups and you can freeze them as well. Happy gardening!
Hi! And Welcome!! That’s a great idea. I was actually planning to freeze dry them so you sharing that helps, but I didn’t think about the stalks so thank you for sharing all this. I so appreciate it. Happy gardening too! 😃🌻
My squash and zucchini plants always put out the male flowers first… I just pick them off. Pick the first few male flowers off the plant and then the female flowers will come on out. That’s been my experience anyway. Gorgeous looking garden!!! Thank you for your videos. ❤
Hi!! And Welcome!! 😊 I never thought of that! My guess is that it probably puts more energy into the female flower coming instead of all the male flowers. That is such a great idea!! I’m going to go and do that. Thank you so much for sharing!! And thank you for watching I have really enjoyed sharing my garden with others and helping in anyway I can. ❤️🌻
@@MustardseedhomesteadingI did this yesterday . I am a 1st time gardener. I can’t wait to see if I start getting females. BEAUTIFUL GARDEN BY THE WAY. What an inspiration to someone like me 🩷🩷🩷 thank you for posting .
@@TheAftermath502 Hi! And Welcome!! Thank you so much!! I did the same thing and I’m waiting for more females. Some have succumbed to vine borers unfortunately, but I replanted so hopefully I will get a decent harvest!! I’m so glad this has inspired you. I plan to share garden tours at least once a month maybe even twice because there’s so much going on in the garden. Happy gardening.!! 🌻💝🌻💗😃
So are these bush beans? I need to look at my NE Tx planting guide for what i need to be to be planting for my fall garden. August is generally a killer month in NE Tx with the heat but this year seems different, a lot wetter than normal. I have a bunch of seeds, i will probably do carrots, kale, cabbage, different types of radishes, some winter squash, broccoli, swiss chard, i need to look at my planting schedule for when & what else.
@@Kat-Knows Yes, these are all bush beans. I’m going to for sure do a follow up harvest video once they all start producing! And I know what you mean I only started brussels sprouts for the fall, but I have to get going on some more fall starts very soon. And the weather does seem different this year. I heard here in Alabama that it hasn’t been this hot since the 1800s, I can’t remember what year they said, but I have shade cloth for back up just in case. And that’s a great idea! Because you don’t know what kind of fall and winter we will have either so maybe even start a couple of different seeds each week in case something happens to some of your starts. Btw leeks and onions do amazing planted next to broccoli and cauliflower. 😊
I totally agree with this video & all u said. I am gardening becuz God said i have to do gardening again. 10 yrs ago i did in ground gardening with my kids helping now its just me doing container & raised bed gardening. i have been doing long term storage with food. I am dehydrating & i also do a lot of lacto-fermenting. I have had many failures since i started back doing gardening in 2020 & with preserving food. I am learning from my mistakes though i did get very discouraged in 2020 & 2021 with my results. But God won't let me give up & so i have been re-working my garden plans especially starting last yr 2023 & i have felt a lot happier about it all. What growing zonr are u in? I am in 9a zone.
I am so glad that you commented because that video was not planned. I was not even thinking of doing an encouragement video, but the Lord led me to make that video and I was obedient to what He said. Three years ago I felt the Lord leading me to not only garden, but to start preserving and learning as many homesteading skills that have been lost over the years. As well as supporting local farmers for meat. And I never thought I would even start a channel on RU-vid, but just this winter I felt led to get on to encourage people to start doing something whether that’s a little container garden or learning to preserve, etc. so your comment has blessed me so much because I know the Lord is working in so many peoples hearts, and it’s encouraging to hear you keeping the course and not giving up because God has you and He is leading you!! I only hope that through my videos I can be an encouragement and your cheerleader when you need it!! Thank you so much for sharing it means more than you know!! God bless you!! ❤️🙏🏻😃🌻
What growing zone are u in?? Gardening sure does take faith. I have to call my gardening 'chaos gardening' just so i quit trying to be a control freak with all of it. I am still fairly tense about gardening but i am doing better . . .
Hi Kat! And Welcome!! I’m in growing zone 8B Central Alabama. And I completely agree. It sure does take a lot of faith!! And I’m chuckling inside because I’m the same way. 🥰 I don’t know if you can tell in some of my other videos, but I’m very particular and over the top organized. Everything has to have a spot but when there’s chaos, which gardening can be chaos, I’m trying to have more of an easy approach at it. For instance, I’m trying really hard to do a little bit each day instead of taking on large tasks all at once and I found taking this approach has helped me the most, especially when it comes to managing everything but sometimes the gardens are meant to be chaotic and I’m trying to embrace that too there’s a lot of beauty in that, I’m learning…. 😃🌻
Hindus regard it as an earthly manifestation of the goddess Tulasi; she is regarded as the avatar of Lakshmi, and thus the consort of the god Vishnu. This sacred plant provides many ailments to the human body therefore is worshipped as it is used.
It absolutely is!! God has blessed us with the time and space to steward our land, to allow us to produce healthy organic food for our family!! And I am very grateful to Him for it!! 🙏🏻❤️ Thank you for sharing!! 😊
@@RU-vidExpert-s2s Hi! And Welcome!! Thank you so much. I’m glad that you enjoy them. And thank you for your support. Feel free to leave any questions in the comments and I will be happy to answer them the best that I can. 😃🌻
Hi! And Welcome!! I appreciate your comment and I hope that my response helps you. While growing in the ground is one of the options people do have to grow their food, my intentions for sharing this content is for multiple reasons. One of them being that approaching this method allows you to control the nutrients in your soil to give you a better success rate for what you are growing because sometimes people do not have good soil, and they may feel as though they have no alternatives or solutions. Another good use for this method can be for people who do not have soil in their ground, and also who might live in an area, like renters, who have no way of planting in an area that has soil. Thanks for sharing!! 😃🌻
Hi! And Welcome!! Yes I absolutely agree with you!! I just wanted to give another option to those that may not be able to plant in their ground, depending on the terrain or soil that they have or someone that may not have a whole lot of yard space. But great point!! I think growing in the ground is another great option! 😃🌻 Thanks for sharing!!
@@candicecrawford2996 Hi! And Welcome!! I know exactly what you mean and I agree. I have done that too! Without drainage, our plants would not do well. Thanks for sharing!! 😃🌻
@@user-qr5og5gg6i Hi! And Welcome!! 😃🌻 Yes 2,3, & 5. Thanks Candice!! 😊 And yes, when it comes to buckets, you definitely are going to need to water more often as opposed to a deeper raised bed or inground. Have you tried mulching the top of your bucket to help retain the moisture?
@@user-qr5og5gg6i Some other things that I can think of to try and help would be what kind of soil did you use, how many hours of sun is it getting, and what time of the day do you water? And what plant is it?
Hi! And Welcome!! That’s a very good point! I do want to plant more elderberry trees in the woods behind me. I just haven’t had a chance to do that yet but I need to. Thank you for sharing, I appreciate your help! 😃🌻
Hi! And Welcome!! Sorry it’s taken me awhile to answer my emails have been acting up on my phone. The tool that you’re referring to is called a dibbler and I purchased that from Bootstrap Farmer. I will put a link right here in case you want to purchase it from there. You could also find it other places like Amazon or garden stores. I hope this helps. @@SuperBre94 I LOVE BOOTSTRAP FARMER!! I have a ton of their trays, and through experience they’ve been one of the best investments I have made in my garden. I should do a video just on those trays alone. Enjoy they are wonderful quality!!
My basil this year went bonkers, seeds went everywhere all over the yard and even in my woods basil was growing, I’ve had so much fresh basil from the garden. I want to get me a freeze dryer next and preserve even more. I’m going to dehydrate a lot of it.
