What started out as a channel for my chicken raising hobby is expanding to include videos related to life and hobbies.
I’m a married mom of 3, and a Director for a county department in Northern California. I like vegetable gardening, growing roses, crabbing, fishing, traveling, etc. My son has several life threatening food allergies which started 10 years ago. My husband is a police officer. Last, but not least, I’m a Christian and have a strong faith in Christ. He is my strength.
I just received 1 dead/8 dying chicks from McMurray after 69 hours in transit. 48 hours later all dead. My post office guy was shocked they don't use priority express, but they don't. They have something they charge for called "priority loading," can't find any mention of the existence of that at the USPS. McMurray states clearly that "priority loading" does not make the chicks arrive faster. They dropped the chicks at the postal center at 4:54pm, so they sat there for a full day before they even started moving. This chick puppy mill is practicing animal abuse, straight up.
I’m so sorry to hear this experience! I never had them take more than a day or two to deliver. I tried ordering from Hoover’s recently and half died. A very traumatic experience. I’ve made the decision from now on to order from breeders locally and hatch my own.
@@theheadhen1855 Oh golly gosh! I sound like I'm bragging there! Not what I meant to do, only excuse is I was half asleep when I wrote that...wanted to say I loved your video and subscribed.
I’m curious if these have held up a year later? How does the Velcro do? And I don’t sew either 🙈 did your curtains start to fray after while without being hemmed? Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for your question. The curtains held up well, very little fraying. I think it would be better to run a stitch through the Velcro instead of the hot glue but each time I make them I just keep using hot glue to avoid having to thread the sewing machine lol. In time the adhesive pulled away from some of the curtains (I have 12 nesting boxes) so I re-glued. I re-make some of them when I do a complete deep cleaning of the coop/nesting boxes (pressure washing them) because the curtains get dirty and I know they would fray like crazy if I washed them.
Good question. No, it is not toxic to chickens. Here’s an article about why it is beneficial to use wood ash. www.communitychickens.com/the-benefits-of-using-wood-ash-around-your-chickens/
I don't know how youtube recommended me this, but appreciate it. On a side note, yall not a fan of that crab butter? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel yall are missing out by doing that cracking method.
I agree one does not have to use a tub. I’m just having fun and trying to get them to dust bathe in one place so they don’t tear up the trees and bushes. The tub is used constantly and I’m really glad I did it.
Yes, I have heard that too! I certainly use it in the garden. I didn’t include it in the video because at the time I had also heard that DE is bad for their lungs. However, since then I have added DE and First Saturday Lime in the dust bath. I figured that the dust bath is outside with plenty of fresh air.
Just found your channel and have been watching some of your videos. You do a great job! I don’t have chickens yet but plan to get them in the next month or so. On the curtains, I like your idea of cutting slits in the fabric to make it easier for the hens to get in/out of the nesting boxes.
Glad to hear you are enjoying the channel and will be a new chicken owner soon. Chickens are so fun! It can be a little work up front but once you get set up there’s nothing like getting fresh eggs. And, if you choose to raise them as a pet they can be.
@Dusty Rhodes- I have not incubated eggs yet. I’m actually letting a broody hen if mine hatch the eggs for me right now. However, I’ve read about it and having an incubator that self-rotates the eggs sounds like a must. A lot of chicken bloggers have the Brinsea model and I’ve seen good reviews.
@@gnarlyshields Yes, I have kept the brooder in the garage or on my back patio. Much cleaner on the patio. If they chirp like crazy at night then they may be too cold.
Thank you, Kevin! I have 18 chickens. Here are the breeds: Wyandotte, cream legbar, bielefelder, welsummer, rhodebar, Brahma, black star, Plymouth Rock, amercauna, cuckoo Marans, and black copper Marans
@@theheadhen1855 In your opinion they all appear quite tame. That is great. Have you had any issues with broodiness? Some people prefer lighter breeds because they do not go broody. I always preferred breeds like you have as well as Orpingtons. Some people claim that Rhode Island reds are aggressive. We never had that problem when I was on the farm as a kid. Murray Macmurray does have quality stock from what I remember.
@@kl1958 mine are all very tame but how tame has varied by breeds. My most broody hen so far has been the Rhodebar which is part Rhode Island Red. I’m glad you are enjoying the channel!
