That won’t help you recover any of the first three digits on their own. The only way you could _securely_ implement this kind of stupidity is if you store the salted hash to the answer to every possible question, like a hash for the 4th, 9th, and 19th letters, the 6th, the 8th, and 12th letters, the 5th, the 10th, and 13th letters, blah blah blah... Th’at’s wasteful with no tangible benefit. And considering that NatWest has a 20 character limit on their password-no matter how long the password is, the hash will always be 64 characters (if using SHA-256)-I doubt they’re doing that funky stuff instead of storing the password in plaintext.
@@cmyk8964while I agree they most likely store it in plaintext since storing all those hashes is even dumber, the password size limit is usually not related to storage but to processing time. If I put an entire novel as my password the hash is still the same size but it takes a lot longer to process. When you have a system that is processing passwords thousands of times per minute it's best to limit the password size
Hashing is a lossy process, hence called a digest, and is therefore not reversible. Seems odd you make a video talking on topics you've clearly just skim read off of wikipedia.
The entire password is hashed, therefore, if it's asking for a few specific characters, how can it check without a plaintext password, because checking the hash only lets you check the full password, not a subset.
Even if they don't have a comprehensive understanding of the entire process of hashing, it still makes sense to warn people that the bank's dropping the ball when it comes to security.
@@mason8335 As long as you utilise good password practises such as a unique password for each site/login, this won't really cause any real major damage. Your money in NatWest is insured up to a certain amount and ifb any of your data were to be leaked it would result in a breach of UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act which states user data must be stored securely, possibly opening up any NatWest customers to compensation. Article 32 of the UK GDPR outlines password storage security and under Article 82 of the UK GDPR customers will be entitled to compensation. So while yes, poor handling, huge massive deal? Not really.

I say the songs are "from Russia" in the video, but this was a mistake. The actual full inclusion criteria I defined for the pack were "either from Russia or sung in the Russian language". Although Pesnya 404 and 7th Element both have Russian lyrics, the members of Vremya i Steklo are Ukrainian, and Vitas is Latvian. I apologize for the misunderstanding this may have caused.
