This kid is about to be the biggest bust in nfl history. Over this entire game, he only completed 6 passes on schedule and past the line of scrimmage. Of which, only 2 or 3 were caught 5+ yards past the line of scrimmage. Caleb is an elite athlete, but watching this game he shows no ability to actually play qb
From this film to me I see a QB doing his best. Some flaws with Caleb pop off the screen here; notably that he operates better in chaos than in structure, however most of the things can be fixed and a lot of them are related to this offense having a poor day.
Wow. Watching this highlight of the game, they definitely would have won if they had quality WRs… an O-line that could block & not hold…. Oh and a defense 🥴
Take out all of the off-schedule throws, the quick hitters, and the trick plays. Just watch him play from the pocket within the structure of the offense.
Just a reminder yall are not coaches, if he cant read defenses he would not be playing, he wasnt accurate because he was pressured, stick to madden please… he got shit to fix but hes pro ready other than penix, yall just come on here to talk
Can see why Sean Payton of the Broncos covets this guy. I actually like the more I watch him. Very athletic and can make things happen on the run which will be what he has to do with the Broncos. Hopefully he can take that next step that Drew Lock never could. But where will he go in the draft ?
As a 40 year Broncos fan...Love this pick...Gives me hope for a couple years from now . Next year is the learning curve for Bo. He will hit the playbooks hard and be a great film guy .
Funny, I have an idiot on reddit claiming he's unathletic and should've been a day 2 draft pick. I guess I shouldn't mind that other people have such bad takes on evaluating. What's crazy to me though is it's not just fans, it is the vast majority of analysts and NFL evaluators. His tape of every game I watch is much different than what he is smeared as, as a very limited QB. He makes all of the throws. Even if you remove all of the underneath throws Bo Nix's production would still be miles ahead of McCarthy's total output, so that argument is complete nonsense to me. He only has a couple bad balls per game, where as most of these guys have bad balls all over their tape.
The way he fights in the pocket to avoid a sack instead of taking it is what is nice with caleb because he's always looking to make a play and with reckless play like that your going to fumble a time or two but over all even though he had no time to throw he still managed to make plays and complete some big throws but he definitely has somethings to clean up!
6:29 this play to me makes me realize why he’s considered a generational talent. I don’t think he quite is but the the ability to make that throw and the sheer amount of balls it takes to attempt it is amazing
Nix is a talented player but tbh this Oregon offense doesn’t showcase his true improvisational abilities so everyone just thinks he’s a checkdown fiend.
He got elite arm talent but all that time to throw won't be in the nfl all that dancing in the backfield gone get cut short. I will say that offensive line at USC is horrible 😂
One time he drop back and deliver a strike. All the good throws were off scheduled . You guys are silly if you think he’s better than Fields let alone Jayden Daniels. Really need to stop listening to guys who had Trubisky and Daniel Jones rated highly
Wonder how the kid does playing under center.. I watched a few of his games and the majority of his snaps are in shotgun.. I’m assuming because he is on the shorter side.
Good short area quickness and but lacks that extra gear to run away from defenders or separate vertically. Because he lacks that extra gear, when he does get opportunities on vertical routes they are mostly contested catch opportunities, and his relative lack of size and play strength really show up against DBs who are physical with him at the catch point. Where he made his living at Illinois was on short and intermediate in-breakers and screens and pop passes, the kind of routes that allowed him to take advantage of his very good, running back-like vision - his ability to set up blocks, his understanding of angles/leverage and overall spatial awareness/understanding of football geometry, together with his natural feel for timing his moves, is impressive. As you hope and expect for a guy with his low center of gravity he has no problem dropping his weight and turning quickly on the comeback and the curl and he does a good job of maintaining his speed in and out of his breaks. The stop-start ability is decent but not special but what he really excels at is using his athletic fluidity and football instincts and vision to weave through around defenders while already on the move - he’s a guy you’re going to want to send in motion a lot. From the standpoint of physical stature he’s not overly impressive: both short and relatively thin-framed. But he is a tough kid, more than willing to commit to the tough catch over the middle with a safety or linebacker bearing down on him. He also has good contact balance, especially for a little guy, which combined with his natural slipperiness allows him to break some arm tackles and occasionally even bounce off some good hits. Like a good running back he also does a good job of falling forward for extra real estate when he is tackled. His small catch radius was an issue at times for Illinois quarterbacks and will continue to be a limiting factor at the next level if he’s paired with a quarterback who has ball placement issues. But despite the occasional focus drop and struggles in contested catch situations, his hands are natural and he does flash the ability to pluck it outside of frame with relative ease. His overall fluidity and solid football instincts give him some route running upside even if the relatively limited route tree he ran at Illinois and the fact that he’s relatively new to the receiver position means that he’s still fairly raw when it comes to some of the details, such as varying speeds, working his head and shoulders to leverage the stem, and consistently using his hands to help measure and establish space on his breaks. At the next level he profiles as a slot-only, zone-beating underneath receiver whose relative lack of size and true explosiveness will limit his upside to being a quaternary or, at best, tertiary target best served by being in an offense that spams the middle of the field with crossers and a lot of receiver screens.
My takeaway is that he did the best you could possibly expect given what was around him. The line wasn't blocking and receivers weren't getting open, dropping passes, or quitting on the route (first play to Rice). He did too much "hero ball" but that's to be expected when his defense is giving up as many points as they do. My only real, real critique is his placement for passes was often suboptimal, even when he wasn't pressured and that limited some YAC opportunities.
Am I missing something? I’m no expert, but it looks like he goes straight to scramble mode and gets reckless a little with the ball. He was under a lot of pressure but I don’t see an elite QB here.
Yes you are missing something. You are def not an expert because if you were u would see the best qb prospect since luck. He doesn’t rlly have a choice but to run when his oline is getting walked back into his lap every other play
