This was the stage that made me realize it’s not just a fucking videogame. Beating it somehow was equal parts frustrating and exhilarating, and this was the stage that made me realize i wouldn’t trade that feeling for the world.
You really played to the advantages of FM synthesis. Good cover! Not the same vibe as the OG, but still as that reflective, nostalgic feeling that made the original so great.
What I like about this cover is the relatively sparse amount of instruments used, which makes it sound more like a 90’s era composition rather than a modernised take. It gives the cover a sense of authenticity that I get a lot of enjoyment out of.
Lyrics: *christmas music* “TAKING MY PILLS SO THAT I DONT MURDER YOU!” “TAKING MY PILLS SO THAT I DONT MURDER YOU!” “TAKING MY PILLS SO THAT I DONT MURDER YOU!” “TAKING MY PILLS SO THAT I DON’T MURDER YOU!” “HAVE YOU HAD YOUR PILLS?” “YES AND I WONT MURDER YOU!” “WHO, ME?” “YES, YOU!” “Well that’s brilliant because it’s nearly Christmas and I have way to much to do.”
To me, Rare definitely composed the soundtrack for the DKC games with a synthesizer featuring the Yamaha sound chip from Mega Drive. It's amazing how close to the SNES version this is. Many people praise the Sony sound chip of the SNES which was based on playing samples, while the Mega Drive's Yamaha was a fully-fledged synthesizer. This is pure art.
Day 8,465. Played my Steam Deck, and am preparing for tomorrow when I start learning Unreal Engine stuff to eventually live out my game designing dream.
