Very interesting. Is there a kit with just the compressor, and would I (relatively easily) be able to use my stock heater core/evaporator/climate controls? Of course custom work would need to be done. I can easily find all the A/C components for my system that I need, but I would really like to have something that I can relocate elsewhere and won't draw on my engine.

Really tidy looking kit! How much power (Watts) does this pull on a hot day? I saw you answered that the refrigerant is the limiting factor for making a heat pump. What refrigerant do the EV's that run heat pumps run? Thanks for all your hard work creating this product!
@undermountac
@undermountac 2 месяца назад
The system does not draw any additional wattage on a hot day, it stays peaked at 1100W. Refrigerant is a limiting factor at 12V. EV's run 400+ V and just run heat pump's at 3X the capacity. At 400V that is only an increase of 6 amps, but at 12V that is a increase of 200 amps.

I really like the upgrades you have added to this and look forward to the Wi-Fi functionality. An Ethernet port would also be a great addition since all the rigs installing these have a router to plug into. I've been shopping for these systems for a while now, and these improvements make your systems look like the best choice for my implementation. The new thermostat options, especially the ESP Home integration with Home Assistant, are impressive. The flexibility of the evaporator units and the focus on high humidity environments are exactly what I've been looking for. Kudos for listening to customer feedback and continuously improving your products. Keep up the great work!

I'm interested in the 48V system with heat capability. But there are a couple things I still have questions about. I'm planning on an above-average 48V lithium system on an overland vehicle. I haven't settled on a platform vehicle yet. But it will be a little more rugged than a cargo van. I'm hoping to incorporate the heating system as much as possible with the AC infrastructure to avoid unnecessary redundancy with ducting and additional equipment taking up more space. I also want to incorporate hydronic heat from the engine as an efficient way to utilize a free heating source to heat the "house" water and offset some of the energy to heat the living space. It does appear your system will be able to utilize the engine heat with heat exchangers. But how will it work with a hot water storage tank to use in the living space? I want to use all energy sources as efficiently as possible. Given that I will use hot water every day while only needing cabin heat for part of the year, I would prefer to be able to use as much hot water from the engine heat as possible before having to heat it with a secondary source like diesel or electricity. I'm not sure if your system allows for that. In one of your videos, you mention a new coolant reservoir you now offer. But the way you described it, I wasn't sure if it held coolant or water. I'm still a little confused about how the whole system (with stored hot water) would work together. I also noticed the new reservoir tank will have the ability to use electricity to heat the liquid as another alternative heat source. I believe it's supposed to be 120V. How much power will it use and will there be an option to use a DC source as an alternate, especially 24V or 48V? I look forward to more info. Thanks
@undermountac
@undermountac 3 месяца назад
The 120V element is 1800W, it can only be a 120V element as there are no 24V or 48V source elements available for this sort of application. The Heat thermostat now has the option of "Aux Heat" meaning when turned on it will activate relay #4 which can be connected to the 120V element or any secondary pump/system that provided auxiliary heat (such as the engine). It's also worth nothing modern day Espar hydronic heaters have temp sensors in them and if they see that the coolant running through them is hot enough (like from an engine exchange) they will not cycle/fire until the temperature dips below the threshold. Coolant reservoir tanks are for coolant, and are necessary to keep an adequate amount of coolant running through the system (hot storage) and to prevent air in the system. Hope this answers your questions, feel free to reach out or ask any others here.

@undermountac
@undermountac 4 месяца назад
Systems that use non-mobile/automotive refrigerants are always going to have the upper hand on efficiency vs their mobile counterparts. They run at higher pressures and the refrigerant has a higher heat transfer and lower boiling point. This is as good as it gets for 2024 for systems designed for mobile application that comply with all state and federal laws.

@undermountac
@undermountac 5 месяцев назад
The short answer is no, not with R134A refrigerant. Heat pumps work fantastic in homes where the interior temperature is slowly driven up to temp and maintained, at which point the heat pump would be running at its most efficient. With vehicles there are so many ways for heat to escape (or cold to get in) you would need a pretty sizable unit to do the job especially if you want it to work at a greater than 20F temperature difference. As a pure example the Model 3 tesla has a heat pump and it draws up to 7kW of power to heat the cabin of a pretty small vehicle. 7000W @ 12V is 583 amps.

@@undermountac So as far as a HVAC system, your unit's ability to be combined with a gas heater is probably the most efficient all-in-one system? @undermountac

@@jonmustang Yes, it's the best of both worlds as you are also able to heat hot water and fuel fired heaters are much quicker to respond and heat a cold van. While many of our components are US made, a big chunk of the units are made at our facility in Ontario, Canada. We try to be as transparent as possible on where we source the best components for the job, as many of our competitors are not transparent at all or make false claims.

Do you have or can you build something as small as 5000btu? I “truck camp” off grid, often no shore power and would like a 12v 5000btu under mount system that takes up minimum to no space in the bed of my truck. AC only. I mounted a parking heater under my hood and ductwork to the bed and it’s fantastic. I have used a small window unit with shore power and it will freeze me out so I don’t need much output. Anything?

The main thing I hate about cruise n comfort is they do not have an HVAC blower like Undermount AC does. Undermount AC seems to have pretty much thought of everything. That means you can have one blower for both hydronic heat and AC. They can even be set up to turn on an espar or webasto air heater. Cruise n comfort does have a heat capable thermostat but I don’t think they have a CANBUS module like Undermount AC does.
