Can the metal box evaporator be placed inside in a cabinet if it has space behind or does it have to have outside air? What is the maximum length of ducting hose. I have a UPS type step van can I cool the front and rear?

No, it recirculates inside air. The rest of the system is outside. No maximum length so long as they are relatively equal in length.
