A lot of people back in the other old days would go down to Romney and take Route 50 if they were coming from Cumberland to go to the Washington DC area my father had the bright idea to go to Bethesda Maryland using old route 40 it was an all day excursion excursion
If you ever do an update to this, you should add information about all the fossils found in this deep cut. Scientists dated one of the first great die-offs from fossils found here.
I-68 was designed in part to take pressure off the PA Turnpike, in particular the antiquated Breezewood interchange, where all I-70 traffic is still forced to leave the highway and go through town. I-68 generally parallels U.S. Route 40. I vividly remember winding up and down the mountain before the Sideling Hill cut was finished. I believe it was the last section of I-68 to be completed, and made a huge difference. My experience today is that most truck traffic, for whatever reason, still uses the PA Turnpike, and I-68 provides a welcome alternative for cars.
Omg ! My dog was also a yellow labrador! He was born in 2009 and died 17 days ago! I’m devastated! 😢 they are really angels! ❤ I miss him sooooo very much! 😢
I know what you mean. I miss Angel everyday. We had great memories as I am sure you did with yours. Hang in there and cherish and appreciate the wonderful memories!!
Up until 2022 I had made my home in Cumberland for 4 years and while, yes, the winters could be brutal, I loved it there. I miss it so very much. Sure, it has its problems, especially being an economically depressed area where drugs are a huge issue. But at the core of it, is a decent place with some really good people
We are extremely lucky to have such incredible anf majestic buildings/history in our town. They don't receive the recognition they deserve. Thank you for taking the time to share.
I would love to see photos of the “rest stops” back in the 50’s - which included a rickety old wooden picnic table, off to the shoulder of the pike. My mother would break out the picnic basket & table cloth & we would eat sandwiches that she made at HOME and we would drink TAP WATER from a large igloo thermos (could you imagine ??”) haha 😂 and we would drink it from unbreakable tin cups. No disposable cups, plates or utensils back then ! As far as bathroom facilities go, you would just walk down into the woods on the side of the mountain, hide behind a tree and viola ! And get this, youngsters - there were NO phones ! 😬
Graduated from this school in 1959 should have been 1958 but was married and had to repeat the school year because I missed to many days of high school. State law explains that. Never missed the honor roll explain that one to me. Oh well attend reunions with the class of 1959 and can say I walked down the aisle of the new gym holding my hands with my oldest son. Hear they are demoloshing this building.
I can almost see this mountain from my house. I live close to Green ridge state forest. My cousin lives on this mountain his foundation is cracked do to the blasting during the construction of the cut in the mountain
Mother nature at its finest I had no idea that the construction of sideling hill is not that old, I was in the 5th grade when it was completed. I just love taking a drive there just to enjoy the view, but to my understanding sideling hill was closed for 6 years for political reasons.
