Off the top of my head: familiarity, form factor, class-compliant audio, certain HRM synth-type instruments, XLR outputs, FC-300 integration...I'm sure there are more things if I drill down. I do enjoy the SY-1000 (I assume that's the SY that you're talking about) but the VG-99 still excites me.
G’day. No, I’m not a software developer, unfortunately. This video features an iOS app called AUM, extremely useful and highly recommended. You might be able to find some info on iOS audio-MIDI app development on the Audiobus forum. At least, that’s where I’d start looking 😊
Nice. After about 15 years, just dusted off my VG-8EX and VG-99. Might give this a go, once I get my callouses back and can play for more than 5 minutes :)
Just an update for anybody following this. Version CrossOver 22.0.1 broke the ability to use the VG-99 editor/librarian in macOS Ventura. Also the most recent Ventura security update (early May) seemed to break CrossOver altogether on my Intel MacBook, but not the M1. I updated to version 22.1 (paid version) and now both machines are working seamlessly. That said, I'm not impressed with CodeWeavers' update policy. I didn't take the 50% support renewal offer when my subscription was ending because the software was BROKEN! Why pay for broken software? Anyway, because that lapsed I had to pay the full fee to access the latest version. And CodeWeavers don't make it easy for you to check if a new version will work...you have to sign out and start a new 14-day trial to test the latest version.
Looking to use midi data to adjust tone via ipad or Android on the pre amp or in the signal chain, can this be accomplished via midi. Curre the roland editor is slow and playing live I do not use a laptop
I haven't installed Ventura yet as I've heard of potential problems with audio unit validation. I suspect the same method as outlined here will work but be sure to not go above Crossover version 21.2. Higher versions break something that affects the way the software detects MIDI ports.
Hi from 1 year in the future, this software is still nearly unusable. We're still on 1.0.2 at least on windows. Which is awful, because I think the product itself is good and editing on the actual hardware seems to be instantly responsive. I don't know why it is so awful using the BTS software. I primarily do not want to have to touch the pedal board because it is awkward and difficult to reach the floor while sitting and holding a guitar. As a result, this great product is almost unusable as a whole. Unless I want to stay on one patch and make no edits. I wish boss would actually show some love to this product, they put a lot of marketing behind this and their sy series.
have you found any solutions to this extremely annoying problem?? boss support is of little to no help, I've used firmware 1.06 and 1.07 but its extremely volatile and annoying. I'm using a 4 string jazz bass with flats and the gk3b 13 pin and only get this octave jump on Bb B C and C# on the G string. 1.06 has better tracking with the OSC Synth but still does the octave jump, 1.07 fixes two of the octave jumps (still on B and sometimes C) but then the OSC tracking is simply HORRENDOUS. I know its a software problem because it can be recreated on different instruments with different 13 pins installed. I want to love this machine but I've spent the last year finding too many software problems to even be able to use it properly and consistent.
Your vocal signal is way low.11:ish With the TV cranked up to hear your voice, the tone blast is not cool. Headphones flying off. Dog complaining. ;) This looks amazing!
Oh! M1 chip problems. I wonder how it responds, if at all, hah hah, to the Mac Studio. I have a VGA-7 It's been my work horse. ...works with the FC-300 (mostly) and has always been reliable. Sure would be great if it had a USB port. Thus my interest in the VG-99. Since the early 2000s ...
Thanks for sharing! When the VG-99 came out, I got an FC-300 for Christmas. ... And NEVER got the VG-99 Facepalm. I'm looking for one again... Thanks for the details!! PS Great guitar work! All the best, Michael
The SY-1000 transmits/receives MIDI in and out over USB. But, do you mean send pitch-to-MIDI data or single shot MIDI note on/off data for triggering assignments in a DAW etc.?
@@dgervasi it’s not really a straightforward thing. You can’t successfully connect the USB to an iPad directly as the SY-1000 is not class compliant. So you have to use one of a number of workarounds. Perhaps I’ll make another video on some of those.
@@lukedoyle thank you. I’m really interested in that feature - particularly linking the SY-1000 and iPad, and there aren’t many specifics in the manual or what I can find.
I currently connect my VG99 - simultaneously audio and MIDI - to 10.13 on a Mac Pro via a single USB connection. This is then used by Logic or VCV Rack.`Is it possible to get this into Big Sur/M1 with the method you describe? Or might I be better running these apps on a 10.13 VM?
You will be able to get the audio to work over USB in Monterey on Intel and M1 processors but only in class compliant mode. On an intel chip you may be able to get the advanced driver working for audio only - not MIDI. Use a 3rd party MIDI-to-USB interface for VG-99 MIDI I/O on any macOS after Mojave. As I mentioned in a more recent video, it is possible to load the windows version of the VG editor under codeweaver’s software running inside macOS which replaces the need for network MIDI. These days, I would only use a VM and network MIDI for the editor if absolutely necessary.
before I had FC300 by midi -> USB keyboard -> Mac. Now (after found this USB driver problem in Catalina) changed FC300 by RRC2 -> VG-99 by midi -> USB keyboard -> Mac. Midi works fine. Thanks!
I'm not familiar with the SD-90 but the method should in theory work with any device -- if you're simply trying to access a 32-bit editor. The point with the VG-99 here is: 1) accessing audio over USB while; 2) accessing MIDI connectivity/Pitch-2-MIDI (DIN Ports) plus; 3) accessing the 32-bit editor on a 64bit only version of macOS via a VM. What's your plan for the SD-90?
Hello, have you tried the SY-1000 FloorBoard software created by Mr. Colin Willcocks, one ov the most renowned contributor to the V-guitarforum.com site? It should be easier to use and without these bugs.
Hi, thanks for dropping by! :) Yes, I tested it in the past. didn't have much luck with it yet though. However, Colin's VG-99 editor is coming along nicely and he said he would be applying some of the MIDI-over-USB connectivity changes to forthcoming versions of his SY-1000Floorboard editor so I expect it will great once he does. VG-99Floorboard is working quite well in its current version on macOS 11.
Hi Andres, thanks for your comments. I'd be curious to hear whether or not you have the same issue with the SY1! I suspect you won't as this seems to be a problem only when using the GK pickup. It doesn't happen when using the SY-300-style processing with the regular pickup.
Dear Good demo. Indeed th VG99 is still a topper. I use in addition the ROLAND Cell Sonic midi connected with th VG99. This extention works really well and controlled over the RC VG99 pedal bord. Super configuration. For its 13 years old gear it is still the top of BOSS ROLAND products. Greets from Belgium Steve Verstichelen
I agree. I'm not much of a editor person as I like to learn the product from the device itself but when I wanna go load it up and save what I did it's a pain in the ass and shouldn't be in 2021.
Hey, the easiest way to maintain usability is to run a pre-Catalina operating system or Windows machine - if either of those are an option for you. If not, I know of no easier way.
Hello LUKE how are you? i only want ask you how you install de driver for SY1000 on ypour mac i use MOJAVE 10.14.6 and have poblemes not read the driver after instal and my Hardware SY 1000 have 1.3 firmware version is necessary unpdate my Hardware SY 1000 to Version 1,5 to use with the Mac ?
Hi Moyezz, I'm great -- thanks for asking! I understand it is recommended to update to at least 1.4 to iron out some bugs -- though it's always a good idea to do a search at the home of all knowledge related to 13-pin guitar tech and much more: www.vguitarforums.com This thread touches on what may be the problem: www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=27877.msg202727#msg202727 It may be that there is a 32-bit driver in your system conflicting with the SY-1000's 64-bit driver. The final post on that thread explains the location of possible conflicting MIDI drivers. I did this update through Catalina but it should be possible to execute via Mojave also (or any other compatible OS). Also... Have you allowed the driver access in macOS Security & Privacy settings?
@@lukedoyle my computer red the driver problem si with the BOSS TONE STUDIO this program not read the driver 1,2 version and ins not more new program in the boss webside
Thank you so much! I just received a vg99 from a friend and was looking for some basic idea of what I could do with it. My chin is dusty from my jaw hitting the floor. I’m so excited to dive in. I think I need to take a week off work and lock myself in the music shed
I have a considerable number of patches that I want to bring up on-the-fly under USB control. How would I do that exactly using native Mac IOS 11.1 Big Sur? (Analogue is OK.) Any ideas?
Hi chapogee, I assume you mean VG-99 patches. The UM-ONE mk2 is now Big Sur compatible so that or another compatible MIDI interface will provide you with the connection you need. What do you intend to send MIDI from? Another controller? A DAW?
@@lukedoyle Sorry to be a bit cryptic. Yeah, patches involving alternate tunings I've already written into my VG-99. The plan is to interface a Mac Pro laptop or an iPad with the Roland thereby accessing those tunings under USB control. (Not MIDI - analogue output only.) Beyond that, a dedicated pocket-size USB-enabled keyboard mounted directly on the near end of the guitar neck acting as a Master to the Slave Mac.
@@micr0chap I haven’t tested Big Sur sufficiently yet (the drive I installed it on died shortly thereafter). But any principles I’ve mentioned should hold true in macOS 11. You will certainly need a virtualized OS to run the VG editor software - if that’s what you actually intend to do. Just a couple of suggestions here, I’ve used MIDI clips in Live 10 to trigger patch changes in the VG-99 also it’s easy enough to connect a floor controller and funnel the program changes to the VG via the DAW.
Wow, I’ve been trawling you tube for years looking for interesting, artistic & informative vg99 videos. I can’t believe I’ve never come across you before. Brilliant stuff man. Subbed, please keep going.
Thanks for the kind words. I’ve been diving deeper with the VG-99, GP-10 and SY-1000 lately so there will be some videos to follow when I have time to make them :)
Great alternative methods for connecting the VG-99 to modern Macs. In my own case I've got Catalina running so I can use my SY-1000 on the Mac side (as well as my Boss GP-10) but to get the VG-99 fully running I ended up setting up a drive with a Mojave partition on it so it would work with the full advanced driver. Or, for those who might want to boot camp their machines I found that I could run Windows 10 with the VG-99 with editor/librarian, Boss GP-10 with its Tone Studio app as well as the SY-1000 with its Tone Studio application as well all on Windows 10. Other food for thought. I've got years of VG-99 custom programs in storage and I'll be using it until it won't turn on anymore as a result so any tips like this are most helpful.
@aliensporebomb That’s also a viable option. In my case, I want to have the VG-99 integrated with the primary OS rather than to require booting into another OS anytime I want to use it. That said I also have a Mojave 10.14.X bootable drive for emergencies. Interesting that you’ve had success with the VG-99 driver/software in bootcamp running WIN10. I’m guessing it works since the computer boots from the BC partition and that any problems (like I have experienced) are restricted to virtual machines running inside the primary MacOS.
Awesome setup buddy! It would appear that you've done what I'm attempting to do.. Make the smallest guitar rig possible! I've been looking at ways to control the Axe Fx over Bluetooth for a while now.. It looks like you've hit the nail on the head! Anywho.. couple of questions if you don't mind! What app are you using on your iPhone to allow the PUC to send a signal to it ? As thats the part I've been getting stuck at! Also, i guess most importantly! What is the latency like on patch changes ? Im using the MFC 101 currently, and its pretty prompt. Is it gig worthy ? Also, just correct me if I'm wrong.. but the chain you got currently is.. Liquid Midi Board (Midi Cable to..) > PUC (Bluetooth to..) > iPhone (running bluetooth midi conversion app / Lightning Cable - USB to..) > iConnect 2 (Midi Cable to..) > Axe Fx 2 XL+ Thanks you in advance! Great playing by the way!
+Ben Ashcroft - Thanks for your kind comment :) That's the chain exactly. The iPhone uses the Midimittr app for managing MIDI over BT (and also the PUC app to connect the PUC). Latency is no issue for me with this setup. How have you set up things on your iPhone?
