funny how relatable they are, very human & yet they were clearly of an elevated background, perhaps bloodline

Edie seems to have suffered a nervous breakdown from which she never recovered. I could never prove it but I believe that it had something to do with her stalked moral catholic background that she nor anyone could ever live up to. I've got a feeling that when she took all for New York and tried to live her life she made it he mistakes that her mother never let her forget and rejected her on some level. Don't ask me how I know this but I've seen it happened before. So very sad because she was a lovely young woman with so much promise and hope.

They were interesting, in that they came from an aristocratic background. Edie looked alot like Jackie. I'm happy they got saved from the poverty, they endeared in that house, towards the end of their natural lives.

Yes, they did. Kinda reminders of the Gildec Age that survived into the 20th century.

Little Edie was so stunning but it seems like her parents destroyed her sense of worth. Very sad.

I think that observation is spot on. She was treated like a little doll, made pose, dress up CONSTANTLY. No one took her seriously as a person, so she never did herself either.

I think the married man she was seeing who dumped her played a big role too.

I cried when at one point Edie said that she didn't want to spend another winter in that place. She said that a little hole in the wall in Manhattan would've been better than that place. I'm glad that she finally got her wish and is now free. I was so drawn to her and her intelligence and kindness toward that mother. RIP Edie, more people cared about you than you could ever imagine.

The film made about them, starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange, is also worth a look. 🎉

The Gray gardens documentary by filmmaker maysles brothers is fascinating. Edie was smart, intelligent, whitty, fun, jaw-dropping beautiful In her youth. A Restrictive father also ruled her mother, they smothered Edie's future to live freely, speak freely, and find love from her many suitors. What she might have become ☹️. Imho, she lapsed into a complicated, devoted, mother/ daughter Stockholm Syndrome-esque existence. 🙄🐦 RIP 🙏

Thank you soo much for putting this together. There's quite a few pictures I hadn't seen before. Two of the most unique souls to walk this earth. Still it's hard to wrap your mind around how they ended up. I never get tired of seeing them. Such wonderful characters. 💖

They were really beautiful and had such big personalities. I'm so glad the Maysles captured these eccentric ladies on film.
