I think he meant women subconscious need to not to be rescued, they're pretty their have a rescuer already; the state, they have a subconscious need TO FEEL SAFE AND PROTECTED.

In my opinion, on the statement of a woman’s need to be rescued and still be independent. I kind of felt like he was saying interdependent, and that while a woman wants to be able to stand on her own, she wants to know that he will always be there.

ALL OF US - man or woman - are looking to be rescued by the one thing that we feel that can fulfill us - true love; unconditional love; loyal love. We want it when we are children (*even when we falter) and we want it in our adult relationships. Women say they don't "need a man" because they are really saying they just don't want any man, but wanting one that gets them and respects them, and that allows them to grow as an individual as well as a couple - now that is rare - and Cliff and Claire are just that! they are a prime example of what a healthy relationship SHOULD BE.
I love it when Cliff gets Claire in ANY COSBY or The Cosby Show episode! Smugness in men is bad enough smugness in women is intollerabile. I know and can appreciated she is smart and talented. It's just the constant need to throw it up in Cliffs or someone else face that's intollerabile. This is why this show was so well written. He fooled Claire into thinking he did not read the book and he put his foot in it while explaining his perspective while being asked about that very perspective in a room full of women. Just funny beyond belief.
