While the anticipatory animal behavior from Edanna in Myst 3 is serviceable albeit highly convenient, in this game I think it goes a step too far in its outlandish logic. Granted we're following the skill patterns of different characters in this one compared to Atrus/Gehn in the first three. I just don't see anything rewarding about accomplishing many of these puzzles set up throughout the game. Something is missing about the cognitive connection that makes them approachable from something other than trying every combination to see what happens.
The number 25 in D'ni actually has 2 different symbols. The more correct way as its a base 25 number system would be as a 2 digit D'ni with a 1 in the "25's" place and a 0 in the "1's" place. We see a 2 digit D'ni number in Ghen's journal so this is a way they write numbers. The other way is just an X, I guess a simpler faster way to write the number 25. Similar to how we abbreviate 1000 as k for example.
Finished Riven 2024 last week, was curious about original, you taught me a lot about the story I didn't grasp!. yeah I cant imagine swapping disks to switch islands lol.. This was so great, thanks!
I learned the numbers from the game in the schoolhouse. Count the clicks. Edit: I loved this, because I'm old now and I can't play games like this unless I take reams of notes. I can't remember shit. I watched this all, in segments. I gather that you have others such as Myst. I'll be watching that too. Thank you!
@@JordanRogers85 Strange I’ve launched the game a 3rd time but I always get the same code (spoiler: fish, beetle, butterfly (?), sunner, ytram, wahrk) maybe it’s a bug, also I’m running the macOS version.
Thank you for taking the time to explore the areas and things that do not lead to the unraveling of specific puzzles but rather add flavor to the overall experience.
I just watched the entire video. Sometime around 1999 I played the original version for the first time. I'm afraid my current PC isn't powerful enough to play this version of Riven and I know it might actually be more fun to look at it until I can play it myself. But I was too curious to wait until then. Luckily I don't have a perfect memory, so as soon as I can play this version, I will probably have forgotten this video ;) It was a pleasure to see you play the game and hear your nice comments on it. Good job. Many thanks for that! I really enjoyed this.
Dude, really appreciated ALL your Myst videos- gave me closure to the series that I didnt want to play but wanted to still experience. Thanks for making them
I wasn’t surprised that Sirrus had a blanket and supplies to set up a camp. Even though he thought Spire had people, it would be a good idea to bring camping supplies in case it took more than a day to get there on foot.
They cut a lot out of the original because their budget was tiny. Fine. But make the tiny part you have look and sound good. In the village, when you have wood railings that don't even align to fit through the post holes ... what the heck are you even doing? I'll ignore the horrendous characters and animations, but why is the lighting so bad? The dark and mysterious mood of the original RIven is completely gone. I have a very strong feeling most of this production was outsourced to India.
The 2024 remake is such a disappointment. They could have at least left the flyover animations in the books. I don't understand why they neutered the puzzles. Is there a new unspoken law which says games are not allowed to be difficult?
Pretty good first run. Took me about 9 hours to completely solve everything...my own fault though for not really taking the numbering system seriously at first.
Honestly the maze in Selentic was mostly just tedious more than confusing, though I was lucky and had played the mechanic age first and so I remembered the sounds and the direction they go
Looking back Serenia kinda gives me Bionicle vibes IMO. Like the spiritual atmosphere along with the advanced mechanical devices like the bathyspheres, and the door to the old memory chamber, not to mention those mechanical looking masks that open and collapse away into nothing like some kind of far future technology.
Hi Jordan - I was wondering or more to the point hoping you’d jump in and do a new playthough for us. I watched all of your previous ones and started watching the Riven one again to refresh my memory. Like you that was many moons ago in 1997 we all got hooked on the Cyan phenomenon! Another great run thru - enjoyed the whole 6 hours - I’m about halfway thru on my Quest 2 VR version and totally blown away with the vision moving around the islands. It would be neat to have some shortcuts to jump around quicker but I’m currently being more like a tourist and I’m just exploring looking for differences. Thanks again - wishing you all the best 👍✅😄 TD 🇦🇺
