Great to listen to your passion through this. When this first came out, I came home from work, ate, put my kid to sleep and hit Myst from 11pm to 2am every night going to work sleep deprived and repeated. In the dark with headphones this game was soooooooooo immersive. I was just lost in Cyans world. Just loved it.

Also when I saw that head in the box. It was just as scary as Myst could be so unnerving.

1:07:37 Just in case you were unaware: The painting on the wall is a modification of a painting entitled "Napoleon On His Imperial Throne" by the French painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, 1806, with Sirrus' face instead of Napoleon's. The developers throw this little knuckleball to those that were not paying attention during high school history class. Clever.

This brings me back. Played this with the whole family back in 1995. So many good memories. Thank you for sharing this and I also loved your Riven play-through as I never got to play that one and probably never will have time like you mentioned. Great retrospectives on an awe inspiring series.

Oh I remember the submarine puzzle so well, the way I solved it was to actually go through it drawing a map of the maze. It was definitely one of the longest to solve. So the sound queues were the path never knew that :D
@casedistorted

It seems like many folks never caught on the sounds were what led you down the right path. I don’t believe I ever even solved it myself.

I was so proud of my 13 year old self when I legitimately solved this. I lived with my aunt and uncle in a little population 500 town for a year when I was in 8th grade. This game was relatively new in 96 and I just hunkered down in the basement and slowly beat this game on my own.
@lukeparsons1187
@lukeparsons1187 9 месяцев назад
Haha yes, took me a while to figure it out. Had to backtrack all the way to the beginning and start again twice before I noticed that not only were there individual sound queues, but they also had two sounds for the diagonal directions.

I finished Myst just a few days ago and this video is just what I needed to complete my experience with the game. I love the lore and insights that you brought up and it hooked me even more into the world of this series. Thank you for making this video. I can't wait to play Riven and I'll be sure to watch your video on it as well.

Hey Jordan, I just finished watching your Riven retrospective, and re-watching this video. I've really enjoyed watching you play the games, but my initial introduction to the MYST series was Exile. Although I heard your opinions on it at the end of the Riven retrospective, I would really love to see a playthrough on it. I was about three or four years old when I watched my dad play it on his computer, and I have a terrible memory for things from my early childhood, so the fact that this game stuck out enough with it's unique designs and imagery is impressive to say the least (at least for me). To me, it doesn't top Riven, although if just looking at it without comparison to the previous installment, MYST 3: Exile certainly stands up on it's own in a lot of aspects. The score, in my opinion, captured Robyn Miller's work so well while also still having it's own atmosphere. It is still one of my favourite soundtracks to date. As well as this, the design of J'nanin and that elevator in the basement of the main building was what I went searching for when trying to remember what this game was called years later. This is why I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on it, although your experience was underwhelming after finishing Riven. Thanks for reading this, and keep up the great work. If you do decide to talk about and / or play through MYST 3: Exile at any point in the future, you can be sure I'll tune in! :)

Watching this actually enticed me to go back and play Myst again! Best game ever! Sure has stood the test of time! I played it collecting all the red and blue pages completing all the various endings! Got to know my way around pretty well. My favorite age was channelwood and I was super excited to find the bonus age Rime! Riven was awesome as well, but much tougher and took some serious time and effort! Thanks for the video!

How you describe your feelings toward Myst and Riven is how I feel about a little Nintendo DS title called "Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective." It's a similar masterpiece, of puzzles and storytelling integrated, from the creator of Phoenix Wright. I would easily put that game in my top five, and I believe it's a fantastic take on the genre of point and click adventure/puzzle games. I've likewise introduced quite a few people to it, and they always love it. Definitely check it out if you are able.

"It's actual something to se this game in full 3D running".... Thanks mate. I'm currently at Riven replay with my wife who liked the three books about Myst. As I've never played Myst 5, I also have a reason to replay all of them now in 2023/24.... So from here, greetings from the VR-Version of Myst. Hope you got that, too and are waiting for the new Riven to come out sometime soon.

The puzzle at 30:30 you learn the sounds from the mechanical age. The mechanism at 1:09:00 plays the sound for NSEW. I think you're hinting at it but you never say the connection.

I saw Myst briefly on a friend's Apple PowerPC when it first came out, and always wanted to play it. Then when it came out for VR, I knew my time had come. It was truly special to play in VR. When I got to the sound maze on tracks (~30:00), I sadly never pieced together the sounds at each junction as an indication of direction. Instead, I did what I always do when faced with a maze: I took the first path on the right. This, ironically, ended up leading me directly to the exit. A Googling revealed that this was a known "flaw" with the maze. :)

Just ran across this video this week. I love this. I too got a Gateway 2000 computer that came with Myst! The mechanical age was the only one I could actually figure out easily on my own without needing any help (not sure how I stumbled across the elevator trick). I just wish I had realized the turning of the tower would match up with the maze runner in the Selenetic age... I never could beat the maze runner myself, the "audio clues" didn't make sense, and I was too frustrated to just go back and brute force map it out or try to figure out the audio clues. Even a few of us at school were playing Myst and shared thoughts and ideas, but that maze runner always befuddled us. At some point I even convinced my mother to buy me the strategy guide (probably due to the maze runner specifically). As an adult, I'd like to think I'd do better if I went back to play it again, but I loved the playthrough with the additional backstory. Fantastic, looking forward to the other videos!

This jogged so may memories for me. It's incredible that you remembered how to complete all the puzzles off the top of your head like that! Thank you for taking me back through Myst. After all these years, I never even went to Rime because I assumed the game was finished after Atrus "handled" his son's books! Did Rime exist in the original? I'll be sure to watch you play the sequels from here (and you got a new subscriber!)
@JordanRogers85
@JordanRogers85 3 года назад
Rime was not in the originals! It was a bonus added to the original realMyst to bridge the gap between Myst and Riven slightly, and I think they just wanted to give the game a tiny bit more content. Thank you for the kind words and yes, the Riven and Exile videos get progressively better (I think anyway 😉).

This was a fun rewatch. I always loved this game though I still consider Riven to be the toughest. When I played through this game I did the ages in the order of how the tower rotated so selentic age was last. The rotation simulator in Achenar's room in the Mechanical Age is the clue to getting back to the Myst book in the Selentic Age. If you tinker with it you'll note all 4 sounds and the direction. As you did that age first you have to brute force it but the answer is in the game.

ive played all the myst games a ton (5 and uru not so much, hehe. as much as i was so interested in d'ni after reading the books), never knew the maze was a sound clue puzzle. but i loved the ride so i didnt mind. but the mechanical age, i dont remember the noise either. i think i counted or timed/guessed its rotation position. i had the same anticipation for riven (grade 10). as good as games are these day, nothing beats that one as a new and amazing experience.

Love all the context for the game! Love your format as well. I just finished playing Myst for the first time with Myst: Masterpiece edition and from your intro it sounds like I was lucky to be able to get it to work on my computer! I'm in the process of editing together my experience into a condensed form for my channel so people can see another person struggling with the same puzzles they struggled with 28 years ago. Overall, I loved the environment and lore of the game, but some of the puzzles were very frustrating at times (The cart ride at the age you access through the spaceship was a particular thorn in my side). And maybe I'm spoiled with modern games, but I felt that the ending left a lot to be desired. But overall, I'm very glad I finally played what was for many their first computer game ever. I'm currently debating whether to play through the other games. How would you compare II and III to 1?

Just finished it today for the first time ever. When I played it as a kid, I could never work out how everything connected. I actually found the game to be an enjoyable level of difficulty this time round. Clues and hints seemed to pop out and be obvious to me this time. There were still a few puzzled that were confusing and some mechanics that didn't make sense at first but I got through it without looking anything up. An example of something I got stuck on that I shouldn't have was the elevators in the jungle age.. having to close the doors of the elevators before they would activate took me a while to work out.

Funny enough, i always went the opposite route you do in this. Saving Selenitic for last because the puzzle always frustrated me to unlock the age (the music thing). So I'd do Mechanical, Channelwood (sometimes Channelwood or Stoneship first, my favorite ages) then Selenitic. It took me a very long time to figure out the games true ending. The Fortress Rotation Simulator would often crash the original CD-Rom version of the game.

I do like how in realMyst you can move and look around freely, but the nostalgia definitely comes to me with the point-and-click to move and everything from the original version. I have both, and I just beat the original Masterpiece Edition. I'll have to play the realMyst version, too, though. It looks so pretty. ^_^ Trying to play through all the games, too. I've never beaten Riven or any after that so I'm looking forward to it.
@katiegordon8357

Also, the maze in Selenitic is definitely one of my favorite puzzles, too. I thought it was very well put together. I didn't know what to do at first, but once the directions changed and I heard the different sounds, I figured it out. It also helped that most paths other than the correct one and where you came from were closed off at the beginning, which gives the player some time to figure it out. I remember brute-forcing through it as a kid, too, but I have a whole new appreciation for it now that I'm an adult and realized how it worked. I'd say the puzzles I didn't like the most were the telescope puzzle in Stoneship because if you hit the wrong button on the compass, it immediately turned the lights off so you kept having to go fix the lights before doing it again...which made figuring it out frustrating...especially when you knew what you had to do, but didn't realize the math you needed to do to figure it out. The other puzzle I didn't like was mainly because I don't consider it a puzzle...and that's finding the hut to open to the door in Channelwood. You can go around in circles in that place and never find it. -_- The puzzle in the Mechanical Age I honestly just used timing to figure out. I wasn't ever sure if there was a method to it or not...I just knew the switches moved the center island to connect to the outer ones, and each one had a different sound so you knew it switched locations. The fact you couldn't see the direction it was moving until you compared it to the prototype in Achenar's room was a little inconvenient, but the stopping points were fixed to the specific direction so that helped a lot. I just finished this game for a second time ever yesterday so I'm all nostalgic about the series right now xD

Ahh I never knew that about that piece of paper on the ground being added later! Makes sense why I always felt like it was kind of tacked on as a kid because everything always feels so deliberately placed, but a piece of paper sitting there and not being blown away was always odd to me Microphone audio probably could have been like 1-2 decibels louder, or turn on audio ducking which lowers the game volume while you speak

I thought Mechanical world was the easiest actually and the first too do..as the sounds of direction are memorized before you hit the rocketship world from the rotation in the mechanical world that's what got me through that terrible roller mine cart ride knowing those sounds of direction in mechanical world..that's why I do that one first...I like your commentary your calm and collective and with good amount of knowledge to these. Do you still stream? What is your twitch name? I tried searching for it but I'm sure I misspelled something, lol.

I do not really stream puzzle games! I get way too embarrassed struggling to solve puzzles with an audience ;)

is realMyst Masterpiece the best looking version of the game? thanks
@JordanRogers85
@JordanRogers85 4 года назад
It's subjective! But I believe so, yes. Some people prefer the look of the non-masterpiece edition, but moving the game to a new engine allowed them to port it more easily.

No I don't think so! Probably should have. I love how they really committed to the lore of the two first novels from Riven and on.

Using this as a guide as I play this for the first time. However I am playing on the sega saturn so it feels quite slow in comparison haha. Update: Did it! Thanks for making this video. It was really cool to listen to alongside my own playthrough

GOG has the 3D version. It's been remastered with more animated graphics and you don't have to click each screen. Just push the w key to go forward and the mouse for direction. It's really pretty. You also have 360 direction viewing I think. OK that is the Masterpiece edition.

16:30 - did you see that new Myst with raytracing just released? The red and blue books have stupid 3D model heads instead of the real actors now. When I saw that, I quit the game and uninstalled it, and I was streaming. Luckily I didn't buy that piece of garbage game. They look terrible. The original actors were interesting. Nobody in the gaming industry seems to make the correct decisions anymore. One more thing as far as your video goes - I usually don't upvote videos but I upvoted this. I'm seeing insight, dignity, straight to the point, and no feigned enthusiasm. I've got nothing negative to say.™

I really appreciate the kind words! I try really hard to stay as authentic as I can. And yes, despite how amazing the re-release of Myst is in most aspects, the character models are not up to par.
