I have passion for skateboarding and like to film interesting, funny videos, my riding progress or technical issues. I also have 2 kids, so they may appear on the channel as well.
Hi 👋🏻 For this style of riding I find Icarus better. It has longer wheel base. Tan Tien is quite short. For me it feels like a trick skate type longboard because of its tails. If you don’t plan to learn pop tricks, then you don’t actually need long tails. Depending on how you plan to ride. Dancing on camber boards is fun but harder because of bouncing.
Hi 👋🏻 I’ve put stock black cone bushings from Paris v3 RKP trucks. I don’t know the duro, actually you could use any soft bushings. VENOM bushings are cool and they have all duro range in their lineup. For kids or below 70 kg weight 78-80A bushings are preferable. And not locking the bushings by tightening the kingpin nut is important.
totally my same style on the little 22" pennyboard. Love how these small bastards can be soooo much fun when you ride them with a surf mentality! keep it up my dude
update: I found a hill close to my place, and I had this video on my mind all the time, gotta have to somehow record myself going downhill carving on my little bastard too and post it! thank you for the inspiration my dude
Hi, what trucks are you using? Stock Penny trucks or Independent 109? For bushings what's the durometer? Cone/Barrel bushing setup or Barrel/Fatcone bushing setup?
Yes, actually you could powerslide any board but there’re various factors that affect. For example wheels. I adore stock Penny wheels for carving and cruising but they aren’t very slippery and I flat spotted one wheel very fast. Another factor is temperature. When it’s hot any wheels are easier to slide. Another factor related to Penny is very narrow trucks. I feel like they tend to turn over a bit. Other factors are temperature, type of pavement. You could see little powerslides in my Penny Tricks video
Both are good but different. Flexy board is so chill to ride, you enjoy every push as the board bounces. As someone from Loaded said - no flex no sex ))) from the other side stiffer deck is much more responsive. It’s better for pumping, sharp turns and tricks. The biggest problem could be if a light person buys a stiff camber deck. When you aren’t able to flex a camber deck it’s very awkward standing on the top of that arc. Comparing to cars, it’s like driving a soft suspension Limousine or stiff Ferrari. That’s Flex 2 and 1 respectively
Awesome carving man! I recently got a tan tien as well, I’m not quite as smooth yet but I’m getting there ;). I do have a question regarding the tan tien though, I’ve found that the one I have (which I bought used but in good condition) has a “quirk” and I don’t know if it’s a defect or not. My tan tien carves differently on each side, so depending on how I turn the board, either the toe side or heel side carve is harder/tighter and the other side is looser. I also have an axis 40 from Arbor which doesn’t really have this dynamic, which makes me wonder: I something wrong with my tan tien or is that just how it is? I’ve gotten kind of used to it but the thought of something being wrong still lingers in the back of my head when I ride it. So is that just how it is or is there something wrong with it, and if so are there any solutions you could think of? I’m just looking for some more information since I had a hard time finding anything related to this online, I’m really expecting a solution, but if anyone has some thoughts would be very much appreciated :).
Hi Marco! First 2 things that I think about are: 1) disassemble your trucks to clean them, apply some dry soap to the pivot cup to run smoothly and check the bushings - maybe they are worn to one side... try rotating them a bit or flipping or changing to new ones 2) sometimes decks get twisted after getting them wet and/or drying in the sun or close to a heating device. So twisted deck affects the board to turn to the side slightly. But usually unloaded. As soon as you step on it, all components are nicely pressed to the ground.
Hi. Nice video👍My daugther just got her New penny. I remember the plastic to be Harder in the 80" not so flexibel as it is today. Am i rong? I love the come back of it👌
Hi, Henrik 👋🏻 Thanks 😊 Actually I never tried those first versions, I had a wooden analog of Penny in 1990. It could be stiffer for you because you were lighter as a kid. And nowadays I love the modern Penny for it's flex. It gives such a smooth ride but being so short the flex doesn’t affect maneuverability 🔥
Thank you, Ant! I think there’re some aspects that influence Tan Tien carving capabilities. 1) First of all, you should loosen the trucks as much as possible but without hanger chattering (slop). You May suffer some rebound but still easier to turn 2) Secondly we must admit that it’s quite a long longboard with relatively long wheel base so it’s not as turny as short boards. What that means is that it has bigger turning arc (curve) so pumping could be achieved on higher speeds. And that brings much more fun comparing to slow surf skates. 3) Tan Tien is cambered so it flexes depending on your weight, it’s flex index and dynamics of your ride. If it’s too soft for you it won’t only absorb your pumping energy but will flex instead of transferring energy to the trucks and make them turn. So if your Tan Tien is very flexy, you want to run your trucks as loose as possible, probably even put softer bushings like 75..78A cones or barrels. And yes, the stiffest board is the most responsive so is the best for pumping. But no flex no sex 😀 so flexy boards are so cool. Moreover if a skinny rider will try Flex 1, he/she might not be capable to flex that camber down so that would be very awkward to ride a humpy board 🐪
Hey 👋🏻❤️ First of all longboarding is for fun and pleasure no matter how far your progress is 😉. Making dancing moves on a longboard is pretty much similar to a Pennyboard except for on a Penny you have to make slow very careful steps like if you’re walking on rocks. So ride long flexy dancer 🏄🏻♂️ with nice turny trucks like Paris for example and enjoy every little new move or just improvement Believe me I’m forty and still haven’t learned lots of moves and tricks like kickflip for example. But I believe I’ll succeed one day. The thing is just that I more concentrated on my family, job and mostly ride freeride longboarding 🤷🏻♂️ So come one, enjoy riding the way it’s good for you! We aren’t 15 year old teens that could ride the whole day through 🙂
Thank you! Actually the wheels grip a little bit too much and flat spot incredibly fast. Maybe that's because Penny wheels are so smooth and carve so well. I wanna try Orangatang Kilmers worn on my Loaded Tesseract to 55 mm. That should be better setup to try longer stand up slides 😃
Excellent, I’ve used the larger orangatang wheels on my downhill longboard and yes it takes serious skill to slide on the grippy penny wheels. I’ll probably get the penny board to leave in truck for errands and parking lots to and from stores.
any advice for trying to learn to carve downhill? i’m living at the bottom of a tricky hill at a campus, so riding back from classes is always the worst part of the ride
Hi Isaac! First of all your board should be able to turn very tight. So loosen your trucks or change bushings to softer ones. Then on the flat train the most tight circles possible both heelside and toeside. As you get comfortable increase speed (just push more). After that start from light hills, try to fully control your speed by sharp turns, manage not to increase the speed as turning would be harder. If you have enough of slope width, use 8-shape trajectory going uphill to slow down and then downhill again to speed up. Progress should be gradual. Carving is about control. Don’t go faster than you could control.
Do you get blisters often while riding pennyboard? If you do, what are your tips for prevention? I don't know if it's because of a long ride but I always end up getting blisters
These are just relaxing dance moves, not huge stunts for a skatepark. Penny is for fun, not for big air. Just do what you feel you want to do, don’t think of others' opinion, if your activity doesn’t abuse anyone of course.
Hi Jod! It depends on a rider. I can hold a board without wobbling on any setup up to about 40 km/h which I think is already very fast for Penny. Anyways I always stand for nimble setups that steer well but people often tighten the trucks to feel safer. I think the more you increase your carving skills the faster you could go on lose trucks as you use your feet strength to hold and control the board. Not just standing relaxed and fully relying on the trucks.
this is amaaaazing!! i can carve but only real big curves Dx i've been trying to learn to carve tighter and pump, and you make it look so easy! i'll try imitating your body movements to see if i can get the hang of it 😁 amazing skill!!
Thanks so much! 😊 Let me give you few tips 😉. Think of pumping or tight carving as if you’re riding a swing - on a swing you shift your body weight to amplify the swing motion in the same direction the swing moves. Similar principle works on a skateboard - think of the trajectory your board will travel tilted and you have to dive with your body into that curve putting all your weight on heels or toes. If you’re making a tight turn your body shouldn’t delay - it has to turn synchronized with the board. Otherwise your body will get twisted blocking the further turning. So first of all you get rotation momentum from your body turn, secondly you stay aligned with your board which is evidently so important.
@@olegeau oh wow thank you so much!! this is really helpful :OO specially about the timing and alignment of the body and the board, i can see that's most likely what makes me lose balance or speed and prevents me from carving tight 🤔 i'll keep this in mind from now on 😊 And i'll be sure to check out that more recent content 👀
